The UFC’s inaugural event in France concluded on Saturday night in awe-inspiring style, as Ciryl Gane saw his hand raised in front of a sold out stadium. All five French fighters picked up impressive victories, and Ciryl Gane brought Accor Arena to their feet with a 3rd round knockout over Australia’s Tai Tuivasa in the main event.

Sitting cage-side was none other than the heavyweight champion himself, Francis Ngannou, who started his MMA career in France before leaving to train in Las Vegas.

After controlling most of the fight early on, Ciryl Gane found himself facing extreme adversity in the 2nd round, as a big power shot from Tuivasa dropped him to the canvas. However, Gane rallied with a 3rd round stoppage, sending the French fans into a frenzy. When asked who he wanted next in his post-fight octagon interview with Michael Bisping, he kept his response short and sweet: “I want the belt, that’s all I want”.

In the aftermath, Francis Ngannou gave credit to his former foe’s performance regarding his ability to control the distance as well as mix in some heavy kicks to the body, which clearly paid dividends towards the end of the fight, but his final reaction was clear. During the post-fight press conference with ESPN, Ngannou stated; “Yes, he’s good, but I’m the champ. So really hard to be impressed. Great performance.”

It’s clear that the champ isn’t letting people forget his dominant victory over Gane back in January, where he surprised the world with his unknown wrestling abilities. After his win, Ngannou made it public that he was fighting with a torn MCL and a damaged ACL which could have been career-ending had he caused any further damage to his knees in their fight.

Considering his victory over Gane while dealing with a serious injury, it’s clear he does not lack any confidence when talking about a potential rematch.

Gane’s win over Tuivasa puts him back in the win column and retains his position as the #1 contender in the heavyweight division.

“The Predator’s” coach recently revealed what the timeframe is looking like for his return to the octagon, stating it will most likely be in early 2023. Ngannou is expected to face either Jon Jones or the winner of an interim title fight between Jones and former champion Stipe Miocic.

Following Ciryl Gane’s Saturday night victory, though unlikely, he could be next in line after Ngannou’s next defense giving him another chance at becoming the first ever French-born undisputed UFC champion. Many still believe that another win is necessary for “Bon Gamin” considering he is just coming off a loss against the current champ.

Eric Nicksick shuts down rumors of a December 2022 return for Francis Ngannou, targets early 2023 clash with Jon Jones

Francis Ngannou’s coach, Eric Nicksick has provided an update on the UFC heavyweight champ’s road to recovery from the injuries sustained in the buildup to and during his fight with Ciryl Gane in early 2022.

Featuring on the latest episode of What The Heck, hosted by Mike Heck, Eric Nicksick made it clear that he feels a December return for the champion isn’t “a realistic timeline” based on where he is in his rehab after the surgery he had to repair a tear in his MCL as well as damage to his ACL.

The Cameroon native has been back home for the last month, but once he returns to the U.S., the UFC performance institute will re-evaluate him and provide an update on his knee, stated Eric Nicksick.

The big question on everyone’s mind, along with when we’ll see the heavyweight champ return to the octagon, is who we’ll see him against. UFC president Dana White has proposed the idea of an interim title fight with Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic, the winner of course would welcome Ngannou back from his injury.

Nicksick told MMA Fighting that a fight with Jones “makes the most sense” and that it’s “the fight we all want.”

A fight with the former light heavyweight champion was in the negotiation stage following Ngannou’s win over then-champion, Stipe Miocic. Talks of the two meeting in the octagon ended just as quickly as they started due to contractual issues between the UFC and Jones.

Jones hasn’t fought since February of 2020 after vacating his light heavyweight belt to make a move up to heavyweight.

Considering how big this fight will be, “what’s another 2 to 3 months?” explained Eric Nicksick later calling the potential matchup “a super fight”, a statement that not too many people can disagree with.

The timeline of Ngannou’s injury has the heavyweight division held up with Jones waiting for either an immediate title shot or a fight for an interim belt against Miocic. At the same time, a fight with top contenders Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa is happening this weekend in Paris, with the winner no doubt hoping for a shot at a UFC title.

With a win on Saturday, both Gane and Tuivasa have a solid argument to be next in line for a title shot. If Ngannou doesn’t return until January or February against Jones, not even considering the damage that could be taken during their fight, then that would leave the winner of this weekend’s bout with a long layover until their chance to fight for UFC gold.

When do you think MMA fans will see Francis Ngannou and Eric Nicksick again?

The reigning UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou has been on the sidelines since his last outing against Ciryl Gane in Jan. at UFC 270. Ngannou utilized a surprising grappling-heavy game plan to edge out Gane on the judges’ scorecards. Following the win, he needed to undergo surgery for his knee injuries and was expected to sit out for a while.

There was speculation that Ngannou might come back this year, but it looks like it may not happen.

Francis Ngannou will likely not fight this year, as per coach Eric Nicksick, who wants him to fight Jon Jones in early 2023

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Ngannou & Xtreme Couture’s head coach Nicksick shared that Francis Ngannou would not mark his return to action for at least another six months, with early 2023 seeming the most ideal time. He would like him to welcome Jon Jones for his heavyweight debut.

“The fight that makes the most sense is obviously Jon Jones,” Nicksick said via MMA Mania. “That’s the fight we all want. The way I look at it is, Jon Jones has been out for two and a half years. If we can’t do it in December, and depending on the way the UFC schedule plays out, maybe [it can happen] in January or February, somewhere in that timeline.

“Jon hasn’t fought in so long, Stipe [Miocic] hasn’t fought since Francis beat him, so that will be two years for Stipe in March, so might as well wait another month for the super fight and the fight to make,” he continued. “Honestly, for me, I’d love the Stipe fight again, or the Jones fight, but if I had my choice between the two, obviously I want to compete against the best to ever do it, in my opinion, and that’s Jon Jones.”
