Bleacher Report’s Dale De Souza:

He may be the most lethal and most promising Bantamweight that you’ve never heard of.

His official record is 25-1 with 1 no-contest due to an illegally utilized soccer kick, with 12 submission wins, seven decision wins and six wins by form of knockout against the split decision loss in his first career fight.

Breaking down the record even further, he has unanimously won by decision six times, with one split decision victory, as well as five wins by rear-naked choke, one win by kneebar, two wins by armbar, two wins by triangle choke, one win by Kimura and one win by Ankle Lock.

Mix all that together with three TKO wins by punches, one TKO win due to an arm injury suffered by his opponent in the first 58 seconds of the third round of their fight and two wins by way of KO (one of which was due to a knee), and what you have is the man who will stand across the cage from former WEC Featherweight Champion Cole Escovedo at UFC 130.

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you Renan Barão of the Nova Uniao Jiu-Jitsu Academy—famous for such stars as former DREAM Featherweight Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, former Sengoku Featherweight Champion and current Bellator Featherweight “The Monster of Rio” Marlon Sandro, and current UFC Featherweight Champion Jose “Scarface” Aldo.

Barão is 25-0 with that no-contest ever since his first pro fight, which he lost, and he will look to extend his streak to 26-0 at Escovedo’s expense.

First, however, we must take a trip through the career of “The Baron” to understand what Escovedo has his hands full with come May 28th.

UFC 130 is set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 28.

The main event on the card will see former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson face off against Matt “The Hammer” Hamill.

The card was originally scheduled to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard. Training camp injuries to both fighters forced the cancellation of their bout.

Jackson was originally scheduled to face Thiago Silva on this fight card, but when questions emerged in regard to Silva’s UFC 125 drug test Hamill was moved into Silva’s spot.

The idea of facing Hamill did not sit well with Jackson who tweeted, “I’m not interested in Fighting Matt,I rather fight Rashad,I have un finished business with him.”

Jackson later changed his mind when he found out that Hamill and his camp had specifically asked for the fight with Jackson, “He wants me? Well, he can have me,” Jackson told Yahoo! Sports. “I’m gonna knock him into tomorrow.”

Four other fights make up the main card:

Frank Mir versus Roy Nelson

Stefan Struve versus Travis Brown

Brian Stann versus Jorge Santiago

Thiago Alves versus Rick Story

Brock Lesnar: How Being Fast-Tracked to the Title Hurt His Development

Brock Lesnar‘s meteoric rise to MMA superstardom seems like something that happened overnight.

The former WWE superstar transitioned immediately from the entertainment business to professional fighting.

After an impressive victory in his MMA debut at Dynamite!! USA against Min-Soo Kim, Lesnar quickly found himself in a UFC octagon staring across from former heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

The UFC is the pinnacle of MMA. Some fighters amass over 20 fights before ever seeing the big stage. Lesnar didn’t only see the big stage in a short amount of time, but his bout with Mir also served as the co-main event to the interim heavyweight championship bout between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Tim Sylvia.

Mir walked out the fortunate victor in that fight, but two bouts later, Lesnar found himself competing for a world title against UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture.

How does a fighter ascend to the apex of his career in just four bouts?

After defeating Couture for the heavyweight title, Lesnar was successful in his first two defenses against Shane Carwin and Frank Mir, but he was thoroughly handled in October 2010 by undefeated American Kickboxing Academy standout Cain Velasquez.

A month away from his showdown with Junior Dos Santos, it’s interesting to ponder what Lesnar’s MMA career would’ve been like if things were approached differently.

Would we have seen a much better fighter?

Here’s how being fast-tracked to the title hurt Lesnar’s development.

Roy Nelson always strives to stay relevant and compete against some of the top fighters.

It just so happens, he’ll face off against Frank Mir at UFC 130. Mir is considered by many to be one the best heavyweights in mixed martial arts, holding victories over former champions Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar

Nelson told MMAJunkie.com he is content to square off against Mir, but he expects a title shot in return.

“I’ll fight anybody, and I want to fight everybody, but whatever is going to get me to the top fastest,” Nelson said.

Nelson has made an impact since arriving in the UFC three years ago, completing a sweep of The Ultimate Fighter en route to eventually winning a UFC contract. He has picked up victories over heavyweight prospects Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve.

Nelson also shares some history with the former UFC heavyweight champion, as both competitors competed in a grappling match that saw Nelson earn the victory in 2003.

Both men have become completely different fighters since then, and according to Nelson, beating Mir shouldn’t be much different this time around.

“You’re a little bit older and wiser,” he said. “In my case, I’d be a bit stronger, bigger and faster.”

Since his loss to Nelson, Mir has gone through some ups and downs throughout his career. He was on the receiving end of a knockout loss from Shane Carwin at UFC 111, then he recently rebounded with a win over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 119.

Despite the recent setbacks, Nelson said he respects Mir and considers him to be one fight away from a title shot. And given his own track record, Nelson doesn’t see himself too far out of reach either.

“I’m fighting a two-time champion, the longest reigning heavyweight employed by current Zuffa,” Nelson said.

“He’s basically a legend of the heavyweight division. I think whoever wins this fight is going to get the next title shot.”

And while being nothing short of confident, Nelson said he believes he is a contender.

“I became a champion in other organizations. Now, I just want to make a run at this. Pretty much any organization I get into I become champion. So this is my run in the UFC,” he said.

Today the realization that UFC 130 has lost its extremely exciting and much anticipated main event has probably began to sunk in. No one would have thought that a third fight between UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and UFC No. 1 Lightweight Contender Gray Maynard would spark so much interest.

Yet that is exactly what happened in the early hours of January 2, not too long after Edgar and Maynard put on a thrilling back and forth affair that encompassed the entire 25 minutes allotted to them for their main event matchup. Once the judges’ scorecards were read and a draw was determined, UFC President Dana White made the decision within an hour or two to have Maynard and Edgar square off one more time.

With Edgar-Maynard leading the way, the main card was shaping up pretty nicely. Rampage Jackson was set to face Thiago Silva, but Silva was suspended and Matt Hamill stepped up to face the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Two heavyweights with backgrounds in both Las Vegas and grappling will meet up as Roy Nelson fights former UFC heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.

And so on and so forth, the wheels keep spinning. With just under three weeks and having both Maynard & Edgar injured, the UFC was forced to scrap the fight altogether and bump the Hamill-Rampage fight to the main-event slot.

So that leaves me with the task of trying to drum up some serious interest in the remaining bouts on the main pay-per-view portion of the card. Let’s take a look at some highlight videos and try and get the blood flowing in anticipation of these fights.
