The UFC heavyweight champion is now the undisputed heavyweight champion of mixed martial arts.

Zuffa’s belt already signified the best fighter in every weight class from bantamweight through light heavyweight, and now the two big heavyweight fights of the last two weekends — Fabricio Werdum’s shocking upset over Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar’s comeback win over Shane Carwin — have resulted in a changing of the guard in the heavyweight division as well.

Lesnar is undeniably the sport’s No. 1 heavyweight, but how does the rest of the top 10 shake out? Find out below.

I can break down the UFC 116 heavyweight championship match between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin stylistically (in fact, I’ll do just that), but that’s not going to really determine who’s better. One man could be superior than the other in every category but one, but if the latter can use that one big weapon to better effect, that might be all he needs to win. Such is the case of heavyweight fighting, when one big punch could supercede everything that comes before it.

LAS VEGAS — With so much focus on Brock Lesnar‘s return from illness as the main storyline for UFC 116, it’s been easy to miss some of the fight-oriented details of his upcoming title unification bout with interim champion Shane Carwin.

Yet in all the words that have escaped the mouths of those who’ve spoken about Lesnar in the last few days, few will have as much impact on Saturday night as a quick revelation that some might have missed if they weren’t fully attentive to his words. Despite the long layoff, Lesnar is essentially re-inventing himself for the biggest fight of his life, admitting to reporters that he’ll be taking the risk of competing in a brand-new stance.

“I brought in Peter Welch, and we changed my stance and switched it from traditional to southpaw,” he said. “It’s really worked out, helped on wrestling and shooting. We changed a lot of things and we’ll see if they work I guess.”

Frank Shamrock’s Decision to Retire Was Greatly Influenced by His Loss to Nick Diaz, Which Incidentally Wasn’t His Fault

(‘I’m gonna retire you, old man.’ Who knew Nick Diaz was psychic?)

Frank Shamrock spoke with Ben Fowlkes over the weekend about his announcement during Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum broadcast that he would be hanging up his four ounce gloves permanently and according to the now former fighter, his fight with Nick Diaz a year ago this past April had a major influence on his decision.

"It was just my body and the time. I put the machine back in the shop and ramped it up and it just didn’t perform. The last time in my fight with Nick – it used to be that it didn’t matter how hurt I was going into a fight, I always performed," Shamrock told Fowlkes. "When I fought Nick I didn’t perform. I had injuries that wouldn’t allow me to play my game and to entertain. So I knew when I tried to put my body to work again, it’s done. The machine’s down. I just can’t race it any more."

Near-Death Experience Brought Out a Kinder, Gentler Brock Lesnar – At Least Outside the Cage

(Old Brock: I hope you choke on that you @$$hole. New Brock:  You have some blood on your face, Frank. Let me get you a wet nap.)

The UFC held a conference call today that featured the promotion’s heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar and interim title-holder Shane Carwin in advance of the pair’s UFC 116 clash July 3.

The most notable quotes, as usual, came from Lesnar, who spoke at length about his battle with diverticulitis and how the near death experience changed him as a person.

From his opening remarks, it was immediately clear that something was different, perhaps even likeable about this version of Brock.

"It’s a great day. I’m done with training today. I’m going home to my family. My training camp is just about over with. It’s just a good day to be alive. I’m excited. The fight is almost here and it’s just a good day to be alive."

"This is what I love to do. Yes, I’m very humbled that I’ve been given a second chance and a new approach on the fight game. It’s been really great."
