In the sport of MMA there are plenty of fighters who fall under the banner of being ‘bad boys,’ but let’s not forget that there are ‘bad girls’ out there too.

In this article, we’ll take a look at 10 of today’s most notorious fighters in WMMA, from the outspoken trash-talkers and troublemakers through to the steroid cheats and the former ‘wild childs’ trying to put their murky past behind them.

Carina Damm

Nearly 14 years into her MMA career, Carina Damm, sister of former UFC fighter Rodrigo Damm, is a true veteran of the sport, having fought for the likes of Strikeforce, Jungle Fights and most recently Titan FC.

However, the 39-year-old ‘Beauty But The Beast’ also holds the dubious distinction of being the first-ever female MMA fighter to test positive for steroids.

Damm popped for the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone back in 2008 after her first fight in the United States at FFF4, where she had defeated her opponent via a second-round armbar submission.

She was subsequently banned for a year, though Damm continued to fight back home in Brazil in the mean time.

However, Damm would again run into trouble when she was caught attempting to submit a fake urine sample following a loss to Jessica Eye at NFAAS 9 in 2013, which was quickly spotted due to the fact it was reportedly ‘clear’ and ‘cold’.

Damm was subsequently suspended for 6 months, leaving her reputation further tarnished.

There was a strange scene that took place during Friday’s Rizin Fighting Federation show in Saitama, Japan.

It’s been well documented that Gabi Garcia missed weight by 26 pounds after agreeing to a limit of 209.4 pounds for her fight against Japanese wrestling legend Shinobu Kandori.

At the event, Garcia was brought into the ring to apologize for missing weight. Although the promotion did not announce that the bout had been pulled from the card before it started, they were missing from the opening roll call that featured all of the evening’s competitors.

Later in the show, it was revealed that both Garcia and Kandori would come out to the ring to address the fans in attendance. This leads us to the strange situation.

Kandori and Rizin official Nobuhiko Takada spoke to the crowd first. They explained that although it’s a rare circumstance for a fight to be called off in Japan so long as both athletes are healthy, Garcia’s weight issues was simply too big of an error for the bout to go on as planned. Kandori insisted that she would still like to fight Garcia.

“I’m talking fast, I just say sorry about this,” Garcia said. “It’s first time this happened in my life, but (I had problems) three weeks before the fight and I think I recover and my first training here, my nose is with blood and my blood pressure, I know (I had problems cutting weight).

“I respect her, I respect my opponent, she’s a legend here… I need to say sorry for all my fans in Japan, I love you guys and sorry (Nobuyuki) Sakakibara-san, Takada, sorry (Kandori) and I challenge you for next year… I hope you accept fight with me next year, I’m so sorry Japan, I love you guys, and I’m back more strong than ever.”

Garcia has since released a statement on her official Instagram account:

“Everyone is looking for an excuse, but when it comes to health and our lives, they can say it’s anything. My life first.

Unfortunately a few days ago I measured my pressure and was high, I thought it was only that day. When I got off the plane in Japan I went to my training and started to have a headache, my eyesight blurred and my nose bleeding all the time. I warned my team, but I did not tell anyone because I did not give up.

After all my training, my nose was bleeding from leaving a towel next to it. It was fine the night before and I decided to cut the weight the next morning, but I woke up with fever and again with my nose dripping, high blood pressure.

Too much stress before traveling, unfortunately I still do not control my body, but I control my decisions. For those who have lost a brother, dying for a cut of weight would not be my choice.

All together, menstrual period, high blood pressure, it was necessary to cut 17 pounds. I chose to live. No need to post any explanation, but no one knows what people are going through.

Do not judge. Thank you Rizin for cherishing my life. I went up to the Saitama ring and apologized to my fans, who continue to support me and asked for my return. I’m going to rest, and get better back in 2018. With lots of news and going all the way.”

The Rizin World Grand Prix saw some early hijinks at weigh-ins when former UFC title contender Ian McCall got into a tussle with opponent Manel Kape which lead to a few blows being thrown.

But that was far from the only drama for the December 29-30 event from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

An already controversial bout between hulking Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion Gabi Garcia and 53-year-old Shinobu Kandori took a turn for the worse when Garcia stepped on the scales at 12kg (26.4 pounds) over for their 95kg-fight (209.4 pounds). The bout was reportedly called off immediately.

Here’s video of the massive miss:

Garcia was set to face Kandori, who hasn’t fought in MMA in 17 years, at last year’s Rizin World Grand Prix 2016: Final Round, but an injury forced Kandori out of the fight. She was placed by Yumiko Hotta, who Garcia beat in 41 seconds.

Rizin has not made an official announcement canceling the fight, but Garcia’s entire year has been plagued by strange happenings as she continues to fight women much smaller than her. She fought Megumi Yabushita under Shootboxing rules this summer, and the fight was called off after she landed an illegal soccer kick. She then fought Oksana Gagloeva at Rizin World Grand Prix 2017 Opening Round – Part 1 on July 30, but again saw a no contest result after she poked her opponent in the eye.

Garcia told MMA Fighting she had only arrived in Japan a day before weigh-ins and had only missed weight by 8.8 pounds.

Amanda Nunes wasn’t the only female MMA star to score a quick knockout victory this weekend.

At the Rizin FF World Grand Prix Finals event held in Japan early Saturday morning, rising women’s MMA star Gabi Garcia improved to a perfect 4-0 professional MMA record with a vicious knockout in another lopsided affair that saw her challenged by an aging former pro wrestler.

Featured below are video highlights from Twitter of Garcia’s finish of Yumiko Hotta, the 49-year-old former professional wrestler who was clearly out-classed and out-matched against Garcia.

Gabrielle Garcia’s fight against 52 year old Shinobu Kandori, a Japanese politician and former pro-wrestler, is off. That hasn’t, however, changed the controversial nature of the bout. The hulking Garcia will now face 49 year old Yumiko Hotta at the New Year’s Eve show hosted at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Hotta, herself a former pro wrestler with an MMA record of 5-4, has not won a fight since 1998. She last competed against Amanda Lucas, daughter of Star Wars creator George Lucas, in 2012 under the Deep banner. Hotta will give up a massive amount of size to Garcia, who has fought between 215 and and 245 pounds. Japan’s Hotta, on the other hand, clocks in at about 160lbs. She has remained active in pro wrestling, and has a background in Karate.

Interestingly, Garcia will not be the largest woman Hotta has faced during her MMA career. In a July 1995 tournament she took on Russia’s Svetlana Goundarenko, a judoka who competed at 330lbs.

Garcia, 3-0 as a pro thus far in her MMA career, picked up gold medals on multiple occasions between 2008 and 2014 at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship. She has fought exclusively in Rizin FF to date. Her last win came by submission (Americana) against Destanie Yarbrough this past September.

The booking of the 31 year old jiu-jitsu champion Garcia against a 52 year old opponent raised eyebrows when it was announced earlier this year. Recent matches involving the likes of Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, and Tsuyoshi Kosaka have seen older fighters return to action. However in those cases, fighters were paired up with opponents closer to their own age. The opponent switch here will also nothing to alleviate the concern for fighter safety, as Hotta is just weeks shy of her fiftieth birthday.
