And the phenom train rolls on.

At Ultimate Fight Night 25 in New Orleans, 22-year-old Erik Koch was largely unable to launch his vaunted striking attack against The Ultimate Fighter season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins. But he did enough to carve out a unanimous decision victory in a taxing featherweight battle.

All three rounds unfolded in oddly similar fashion. The action would begin on the feet, where Koch (13-1) held a decided advantage, throwing crisp, if not devastating, kicks and punch combinations. Though Brookins (12-4) showed little in the way of striking offense, his defense—particularly his head movement—seemed improved, and prevented Koch from inflicting major damage.

In each round, following the early standing exchange, Brookins tried and failed to score a takedown. Koch showed impressive takedown defense, but was unable to prevent the bigger, stronger Brookins from pressing and holding him against the cage. Brookins controlled Koch on the fence for much of the fight, but mounted no consistent offense from that position.

Brookins ultimately scored on a takedown more than once, but did so only after expending major energy, which may have negated the pressure he sustained on Koch when Brookins had him pressed against the fence.

The judges scored the bout 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27, all in favor of Koch. An argument could have been made that Brookins, by virtue of his extended Octagon control, deserved the victory. But in the end, the judges appeared to conclude that Koch scored enough points through his strikes and his takedown defense to come away with the victory.

Can you say fight of the night?

Fireworks exploded in the first seconds of Round 1 as both men were dazed by the time the clock reached 30 seconds.

Brent Weedman took control of the grappling initially, but Chris Lozano dumped him with a massive slam. Weedman reciprocated as Lozano gave up his back, which seemed to be a theme for this fight, and desperately sought out a rear-naked choke for the remainder of the first round.

The second round was a slug-fest with Lozano’s technical striking ruling the day, as he dazed Weedman quite a few times. However Weedman’s fighting spirit wouldn’t allow him to waiver as he walked forward taking punch after punch.

Both men’s conditioning came into play as they both seemed to wobble after launching offensive assaults, though Lozano’s punching power put him over the top in Round 2.

Round 3 was truly “survival of the fittest” as both fighters attacked with their strikes. However, once again Lozano was getting the best of Weedman in the boxing arena. Lozano attempted a spinning heel kick that Weedman avoided, but as his back was turned Weedman secured Lozano from behind and proceeded with a takedown.

Lozano fought off a rear-naked choke attempt and completed a short-lived sweep of Weedman in an attempt to get back to his feet. The third round ended with Lozano still on top in the striking area with Weedman taking control on the ground whenever the opportunity arose.

Chris Lozano was awarded a well-deserved decision in a fight that was definitely the best fight of the televised card. He will be a formidable opponent for whoever he crosses in the quarterfinals.

Bellator 49 Results: Ben Saunders Swarms in Dominant Win

Ben “Killer B” Saunders has fought under the bright lights and scrutiny of large promotions. Chris Cisneros hasn’t, and it definitely showed on Saturday night at Bellator 49 in New Jersey.

Saunders took care of Cisneros at in the third round of the Bellator Fighting Championships welterweight tournament quarterfinals. If you were looking for a fight that exhibited many facets of mixed martial arts, then this was the bout to watch. Cisneros seemed to be a minor hurdle for Saunders as Killer B controlled the fight from start to finish.

Saunders came out blazing with a series of kicks and took control of Round 1 within the first minute. The Ultimate Fighter: Season 6 alum exhibited great wrist control and volleyed back and forth between Kimura and Americana attempts. Chris Cisneros was clearly overwhelmed, appearing just happy to be there.

This fight would’ve definitely been over if elbows were allowed in the tournament. I’m not sure if the short notice or lack of big fight experience blinded Cisneros to Saunders’ attacks, but he clearly wasn’t on top of his game.

Saunders did show some fight on the ground with a couple of reversals as well as thwarting off a few of the submission attempts from Saunders, but it was for not. As in many fights before, Saunders’ razor-sharp knees destroyed Cisneros in the clinch, and Saunders swarmed to finish with ground and pound before the referee stepped in and called the fight.

Saunders definitely looks like a solid candidate to win the tournament and challenge for the championship belt. Cisneros should be evaluated when he has a full training camp and against an opponent more on his level.

During the UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami prelims, fans were treated to what seemed like an inept, if hilarious, move by Brazilian middleweight Rousimar Palhares.

After kicking Dan Miller in the head and knocking him flat on his back, “Toquinho” started punching his grounded opponent repeatedly. Miller was helplessly covered up, and Herb Dean looked ready to stop the fight.

Palhares walked away—hands in the air in total elation of his latest win, and jumped on the fence.

Only there was a problem: Herb Dean never stopped the fight. He dragged Palhares down from the fence and restarted the fight again. In the confusion, Miller lands a left and nearly stops Palhares!

Unfortunately for Miller, that was the closest he got to winning the fight. It went the distance, but not before Palhares established his dominance time and again.

So what caused all this confusion? Did Palhares try to referee his own fight? Is he an idiot?

Or is Rousimar Palhares simply misunderstood?

Let’s examine a few facts and attempt to draw some conclusions.

Recently I attended the latest Tuff-N-Uff event on August 26th, and I can tell you it was quite a pleasure to see with floor seats. This is my coverage of the main card fights, and I do hope you enjoy it.

There were three title fights on the line, with two of them in the women’s divisions, so there was definitely a lot on the line!

Thank you in advance, for reading and leaving a comment about your thoughts on the piece.
