Gamebred Bareknuckle 8 Headliner Ends in No Contest Due to Controversial Illegal Knee

The Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 8 headliner on Friday night came to a crashing halt just past the halfway point of the opening round due to an illegal knee.

Just when it looked like we were headed toward another highlight-reel knockout on the night, disaster struck at the 2:47 mark when Brandon Davis threw a knee while ex-UFC fighter Randy Costa was crouched against the cage wall. During the first two minutes of the fight, Costa was in complete control and lighting up Davis, much to the chagrin of the local crowd.

However, Davis was able to turn the tide and put Costa into survival mode. As Costa dropped down and attempted to cover up amid a barrage of strikes, Davis threw a knee that appeared to connect with Costa’s head while he was on the mat.

Referee Eric MacMahon brought an immediate halt to the contest and called for a review of the replay which quickly confirmed that the illegal blow caught Costa in the head.

With Costa unable to continue, the bout was stopped and dubbed a no-contest, bringing an anticlimactic end to an otherwise entertaining night of fights in Biloxi, Mississippi.

On Friday night, fight fans will be treated to a rematch 15 years in the making as ex-UFC champions Junior dos Santos and Fabricio Werdum put down the four-ounce gloves and go toe-to-toe at Gamebred Bareknuckle 5.

Emanating from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, Jorge Masvidal’s promotion will offer fans a heavyweight clash between two legends of the sport. Junior dos Santos (21-10-0) will make his first appearance in the cage since suffering his fifth-straight loss at the hands of Yorgan De Castro under the Eagle FC banner more than a year ago. Meeting him will be submission specialist and fellow former UFC heavyweight world champion, Fabricio Werdum (24-9-1).

Ahead of their main event clash in the Sunshine State, Junior dos Santo and Fabricio Werdum went face-to-face at the official Gamebread Bareknuckle weigh-ins on Thursday.

Junior dos Santos is Ready to Start a New Chapter in His Career

The two heavyweight icons first met at UFC 90 in what was Junior dos Santos’ promotional debut. As a result, ‘Cigano’ entered the bout as a significant underdog, but he only needed 80 seconds to prove the oddsmakers wrong, scoring a highlight-reel-worthy KO against Werdum that earned him Knockout of the Night and Upset of the Year honors.

“I don’t think of this as a rematch because so much is different today,” Dos Santos said during the weigh-in ceremony. “The main thing hasn’t changed though, it’s still his grappling against my striking. My motivation is to go in there and show the world the best of me. When I do that, I’ll walk away with a win. I built who I am through a lot of hard work and sacrifice. That’s why I’m privileged to be in this position again. I just love to fight and now that I’m doing a new thing in bare-knuckle, it’s gonna be very fun.”

Having his turn on the microphone, Fabricio Werdum suggested that a bare-knuckle fight would give him a decided advantage over the heavy-hitting Brazilian on Friday night.

“I don’t think about the past, I just think about today,” Werdum added. “My moment is now and I don’t think about what’s come before. No gloves will help my grip and with my grappling. I think it might be a little bit of an advantage for me. I’m very comfortable with no gloves. I think it’s only a small difference for me to be bare-knuckle because MMA gloves are small. I train a lot of the time with no gloves in the gym anyway. I’m really excited to have this bare-knuckle fight for the first time,” (h/t MMA Mania).

Gamebred Bareknuckle 5: Dos Santos vs. Werdum will air live and for free on the Gamebred YouTube channel starting at 7 p.m. EST.

Former UFC interim lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee is looking to find somewhere that he can truly call home, for the foreseeable future.

“Motown Phenom” has been a bit of a gun for hire as of late and after his UFC return didn’t pan out the way he hoped it would, Lee is exploring some new options.

On November 15, he’s set to debut on Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA when he faces off against Saul Almeida.

Lee doesn’t see this as a quick stop-gap before signing for another MMA promotion and in fact, believes that he can raise the profile of the sport.

Kevin Lee Believes That He Can Elevate Bare Knuckle MMA Like Mike Perry Has With BKFC

Lee is confident that with his fighting style, he will be very effective when competing in bare-knuckle MMA.

His heavy wrestling style should allow him to negate a lot of the damage that would usually come with competing without the gloves on.

He said in a recent interview with MMA Fighting that he not only believes that this switch will suit him, Lee thinks he can elevate the sport as a result of his success.

The 32-year-old made reference to the impact that Mike Perry has had in bare-knuckle boxing since departing the UFC, going on to become the face of BKFC.

“I’m curious to see how I’m gonna pan out. You see guys like Mike Perry really take bare knuckle boxing and take it to a different level because it fit his style really well. I think that bare knuckle MMA, for me, could be that thing that does that or I could be that guy for bare knuckle MMA. You know, I got great kicks, I got great wrestling and I got great top pressure and all of that kind of blends to bare knuckle the best.”
