BJJ icon Gordon Ryan was very impressed with the grappling skills of undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones during their week of training.

Originally scheduled to headline UFC Fight Pass Invitational 5 on December 10, Ryan was forced to withdraw due to a rib injury. Still, that didn’t stop the greatest grappler on the planet from taking in the action live inside The APEX in Las Vegas. In the main event of the evening, Nicholas Meregali defeated Felipe Pena via a rear-naked choke while Nicky Rod added another win to his resume, besting Yuri Simoes on points.

Following the festivities, Gordon Ryan spoke with media members at the post-fight press event. While there, he opened up about his training sessions with Jon Jones in October.

“With Jon Jones, he’s very similar to GSP (George St. Pierre) in that he’s not the best in any one area, but the way he combines everything is just on another level,” Ryan said. Even just grappling. Like, his ability to intuitively change his gameplay from, you know, the start of the roll to the end of the roll, from round to round, is incredibly impressive.

So the most impressive thing is, obviously, his ability to put everything together, but his ability to adapt as the match goes on and change the game plan per what you’re doing. I was very impressed with him as a person and as an athlete all around.

Gordon Ryan Heaps Praise on Jon Jones’ Ability to Pick Things up quickly

Jon Jones was in the process of preparing for a heavyweight superfight with former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic at UFC 296. Sadly, ‘Bones’ was forced to withdraw after suffering a pectoral tear weeks before fight night.

He recently underwent surgery and is expected to be out for six to eight months, putting his potential return around summer 2024 at the earliest.

“You always go in and you don’t know what to expect from you’re training with athletes from other sports,” Ryan added. Obviously, he doesn’t focus on jiu-jitsu, but his wrestling is top-notch. His jiu-jitsu is tough and he’s good from everywhere. He learns incredibly quickly. Most of the time, you see guys… Young athletes usually learn a lot faster. It’s like the old saying, you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but he’s nearing 40 now, and everything I taught him…

“If I taught him five things and he instantly picked up three, he’d instantly put those three things into his game and he was hitting them 100 times better from the start of the week to the end. He was a really impressive person to be around.

Gordon Ryan has not competed in BJJ since scoring a victory over Nicky Rod at a Fight Pass Invitational event in December 2022. He is expected to be back on the mat in 2024.

Octagon Legend Georges St-Pierre Shuts Down Rumors of His MMA Return at UFC 300: ‘I am not coming back!’

Georges St-Pierre

If you were hoping to see Octagon legend Georges St-Pierre make his long-awaited return at UFC 300, we’re afraid we’ve got some bad news.

Originally rumored to compete against Nick Diaz at a UFC Fight Pass Invitational event this month, GSP was pulled from the submission grappling showcase due to a reported injury. Enter former three-title UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen who suggested that “meaningful people” were talking about re-booking the bout between St-Pierre and Diaz in the cage rather than on the mat.

“You got to 300 a certain way,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “Did you do that by bringing guys in on a one-off? I mean the St-Pierre versus Diaz, does that draw? sure. Why didn’t it happen at 199 or 201? Or 299 or 301? Why wouldn’t it happen there, if that is what got us to 300, why would we not continue to follow the principles and policies that got us here?

“I mean, I’m just asking because I’m hearing from some pretty good people, from some pretty meaningful people, a level of silliness within these fights.”

It wouldn’t be the first time the UFC pulled a legendary fighter out of mothballs for a milestone event. UFC 200 saw the return of former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Perhaps there was some truth to what Sonnen was spitting.

Okay, maybe not.

Recently, St-Pierre poured cold water over the rumors of his epic comeback, making it abundantly clear that it’s not going to happen.

“I haven’t stepped foot in the UFC octagon in a very long time,” GSP wrote on X. “And no, I am not coming back!”

St-Pierre Says there is ‘No Chance’ he’s coming back

In case that wasn’t clear enough, St-Pierre responded to a fan directly on social media, letting him know that there is “No chance!” that he’ll be returning at UFC 300, or any other event for that matter when it comes to MMA.

Are you disappointed to find out that the former welterweight and middleweight world champ won’t be making his return in 2024?

Nick Diaz denies withdrawing from UFC grappling match with Georges St-Pierre he's selling you wolf tickets

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Nick Diaz has denies claims that an injury forced him from an agreed showdown with former Octagon foe, Georges St-Pierre at a UFC Fight Pass Invitational event in December, once more claiming the Canadian is “selling wolf tickets” to fans.

Diaz, a former undisputed champion under the banner of the now-defunct, WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) and Strikeforce, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he snapped a lengthy hiatus at UFC 266 back in 2021, suffering a TKO loss to former welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler in a middleweight rematch.

And despite noting plans for a return to mixed martial arts competition inside the Octagon this year, Stockton native, Diaz had apparently agreed to take on the above-mentioned former duel-weight champion, St-Pierre in a grappling match in December of this year, with the latter claiming a pair of injuries suffered by both forced them from the submission grapling clash.

However, denying those claims on his official Instagram account overnight, Diaz, the elder brother of former UFC lightweight title challenger, Nate Diaz, insisted he was “ready” to compete against St-Pierre.

“George (sic) [Georges St-Pierre] selling wolf tickets y’all, @danawhite ready LFG,” Nick Diaz posted on his official Instagram account.

Sharing the Octagon with then-welterweight champion, St-Pierre back in March 2013 in Quebec, Canada, Diaz suffered a unanimous decision loss to the former two-weight champion and sport icon.

In his most recent professional win, Diaz turned in a one-sided unanimous decision victory over former two-division titleholder, B.J. Penn back in 2011 – earning a Fight of the Night bonus.

Georges St-Pierre plan to face Nick Diaz at UFC Fight Pass Invitational grappling match postponed

Former two-division champion, Georges St-Pierre has revealed today that he had agreed terms to face-off with former title challenger and prior Octagon foe, Nick Diaz in a UFC Fight Pass Invitational grappling match in December of this year, until the pairing was postponed as both encountered injuries.

St-Pierre, a former undisputed middleweight and welterweight champion under the banner of the organization, revealed earlier this summer that he was in line to compete in submission grappling under the banner of the UFC in December of this year.

And in the weeks following the announcement of his feature at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational in December, reports revealed how former middleweight and welterweight title challenger, Demian Maia had welcomed the bout, which had so-far failed to come to fruition.

Georges St-Pierre reveals scuppered plans to grapple Nick Diaz in December

However, per St-Pierre, a grappling rematch with prior UFC opponent, Diaz was in the works for December as he informed TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter until he and the Stockton veteran both suffered injury setbacks.

“Just spoke with Georges St-Pierre, who revealed that he had agreed to face Nick Diaz in his grappling bout at the UFC Fight Night Invitational in December,” Bronsteter posted on X. “Unfortunately, both suffered injuries recently and it has been postponed.”

Facing off with Diaz in a welterweight title fight defense back in March of 2013, Canadian fan-favorite, St-Pierre landed a unanimous decision win over the fan-favorite former WEC and Strikeforce gold holder.

Sidelined from the Octagon since a rematch loss to Robbie Lawler back in 2021, Diaz had announced plans for a return to combat sports earlier this year, and was recently spotted training alongside heavyweight knockout king, Derrick Lewis ahead of a planned comeback to competition.

Luke Rockhold offers to meet Georges St-Pierre in grappling match I'll go straight for your neck UFC

Former undisputed middleweight champion and decorated grappler, Luke Rockhold has offered to return to grappling competition later this year alongside former duel-weight UFC champion, Georges St-Pierre – claiming he would not hold back and straight for the Canadian if he is actually booked against him.

Rockhold, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in August of last year after UFC 278, most recently suffered a close, unanimous decision loss to incoming UFC 294 feature and one-time title chaser, Paulo Costa.

Returning to combat sports in the time since, Rockhold headlined a BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) card against fellow UFC veteran, Mike Perry back in April in Broomfield, Colorado, suffering a second round TKO defeat after suffering a mouth injury.

And last month following the UFC Hall of Fame ceremony, former undisputed middleweight and welterweight champion, St-Pierre was announced as a returnee on an upcoming UFC Fight Pass Invitational in December of this year – with links to a grappling showdown with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, and former Octagon title challenger, Demian Maia.

While an opponent for St-Pierre’s return to competition has yet to be officially booked, Santa Cruz native, Rockhold has thrown his name into the hat to share the mats with the Quebec favorite.

“Georges St-Pierre wants to go, I would go with Georges in a heartbeat,” Luke Rockhold told MMA Junkie. “But, if he’s smart, probably not. I’m too big and too good for him.”

“I’m not going down below 185 pounds,” Luke Rockhold continued. “Grappling, I wouldn’t go below 190 (pounds). If Georges wants to go I will meet him. 190 pounds any day of the week. I’d love to do it.”

It appears that UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre has found an opponent for his highly anticipated return to the mats.

‘Rush’ announced that he would headline a UFC Fight Pass Invitational event in December, but was unable to offer up any details as far as who his opponent would be. Well, now we know that St-Pierre will square off with one of the most accomplished grapplers in MMA history, Demian Maia. The two-time UFC title challenger revealed himself as St-Pierre’s opponent in a post on social media.

“Every now and then, something comes up that still does really motivate you,” Maia tweeted. “Grappling @GeorgesStPierre will be a huge challenge & great motivation. You GSP are one of the greatest competitors ever, whom I respect a lot. I’m game! Looking forward to competing at @ufc invitational.”

St-Pierre’s Opponent, Demian Maia, is One of MMA’s Most Accomplished Grapplers

While Georges St-Pierre was busy dominating the welterweight division, Demian Maia was making a name for himself at middleweight. Debuting at UFC 77, Maia scored five-straight wins, including a first-round submission against Chael Sonnen, en route to a UFC title fight with the legendary Anderson Silva. Unfortunately, their fight would go on to become one of the worst title fights in promotional history. For five rounds, Maia and Adesanya refused to engage with one another, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of fight fans and UFC President Dana White.

After failing to capture UFC gold at middleweight, Maia moved to welterweight and engaged in some memorable matchups with Jon Fitch, Jake Shields, and Rory MacDonald. Maia bested Jorge Masvidal in a title eliminator at UFC 211, earning himself a shot at then-welterweight king Tyron Woodley. Maia once again came up short, suffering a unanimous decision defeat. He went 3-2 in his last five fights as his contract with the promotion expired in 2021 amid back-to-back losses against Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad.

Outside of the Octagon, Maia is an accomplished BJJ practitioner, scoring titles at ADCC, the Pan American, and the IBJJF World Championships
