Gilbert Burns will be sticking around the UFC for the foreseeable future.

Burns took to Twitter to announce he has signed a new multi-fight deal with the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion. He thanked the UFC’s Dana White and Sean Shelby, as well as manager Ali Abdelaziz.

“I just signed a new multi-fight deal with the UFC. Thanks @danawhite and @seanshelby for taking care of me. Just waiting for the next opponent. A lot of people talking (crap) abt the @ufc but without the UFC and Dana I would not be here! Thanks my brother @AliAbdelaziz00 the best!”

Recently, Burns said he’s looking to add a five-round stipulation to his new contract, and it looks like he got it.

Burns is currently the No. 4-ranked welterweight in the UFC. His last fight resulted in a decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev. However, back in 2021, Burns racked up a six-fight win streak to earn himself a shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Things ultimately didn’t work out for Burns, who was bested by Usman via TKO. Burns bounced back with a decision win over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, before being defeated by Chimaev.

Now, Burns eagerly awaits his next opponent, as the 35-year-old looks to make another push for the 170-pound crown. In a division that contains Usman, Colby Covington, Leon Edwards, Chimaev, and so many more — it certainly won’t be easy.

Rakhmonov: Chimaev Was Given Victory Over Burns Due To Popularity

UFC welterweight prospect Shavkat Rakhmonov believes that more than just fighting may have been considered in the Khamzat Chimaev vs. Gilbert Burns verdict.

At UFC 273 in April, rising star Chimaev received a true litmus test of his championship credentials against two-time title challenger Burns. The pair went to war for three rounds, certainly securing their future place in the 2022 Fight of the Year discussion. Although given this past weekend’s headliner, they may have to settle for second place.

After 15 minutes of bloody and back and forth action, it was “Borz” who had his hand raised via unanimous decision, ascending him into the welterweight top five and to within touching distance of a title shot.

Given the close and competitive nature of the contest, it unsurprisingly split opinion. Now, joining Ian Garry as another Sanford MMA teammate backing Burns’ performance, surging prospect Rakhmonov seemingly believes that his Brazilian peer was unfortunate to walk way with a defeat.

During a recent interview with Combat Sports on Fanatics View, “Nomad” suggested that Chimaev’s popularity may have played a part in the Chechen-born Swede getting the nod over Burns.

“I think it was a very equal fight, in my opinion. But Khamzat, I believe, got the win because he’s more popular. Maybe that’s why he was awarded the win,” said Rakhmonov.

However, the #15-ranked welterweight also admitted that Burns’ defensive strategy in the final round likely cost him what would have been an upset victory over the highly touted Chimaev in Jacksonville.

“But first round I don’t know who won, could be Khamzat, could be Burns. Then it was pretty much an even fight. The third round, Khamzat was more of an aggressor. I think that is why Burns didn’t get the win, because he played too defensively,” added Rakhmonov. “But you never know, sometimes I don’t understand UFC judges and how they get to their decisions.”

Rakhmonov has followed a similarly dominant path up the UFC ladder as Chimaev since arriving in 2020. Should he emerge victorious over top-10 contender Neil Magny later this month, the Kazakh will move one sizable step closer to an exciting Octagon date with “Borz.”

Given Rakhmonov’s latest comments, their previous heated back and forth, and the never-ending comparisons between the pair, the backstory will certainly be an intriguing one by the time they come to blows, which appears to be an inevitability given their trajectories.

Do you agree with Shavkat Rakhmonov’s take on Khamzat Chimaev’s victory over Gilbert Burns?

It seems that Gilbert Burns is ready to make his Octagon return.

Two months after his Fight of The Year contender against Khamzat “Borz” Chimaev, Gilbert Burns has revealed that he is very much ready to return, and even has a perfect dance partner in mind. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Burns had this to say:

“I’m kind of itching a little bit to be back in there again…I think one of the possibilities is Jorge Masvidal. He’s already shown a lot of interest in getting that fight, and I have nothing but respect for that guy but…I need to get a finish.” Burns elaborated further on this by highlighting how razor-close his last fight with Chimaev was, and also made it clear that he doesn’t want to leave the fate of his fights to the judges.”

Gilbert Burns wants Jorge Masvidal next

Explaining further about why it is Masvidal specifically that Burns would like to return against, “Durinho” stated that:

“Jorge’s a big name, and I think we’ll put on a show”. He once again made clear his respect for Masvidal, a guy who has had “over 50 fights…including backyard fights.” Durinho also called on the UFC to make the fight in any arena in Florida, noting the strong presence of “the Latin and Brazilian communities” there. He also called for the BMF belt to be put on the line too.

Burns, as mentioned above, is coming off a loss to Khamzat Chimaev, albeit in a truly epic fight for the ages, whilst Masvidal is coming off a pretty dominant loss to bitter rival and arch-enemy, Colby “Chaos” Covington. However, Masvidal’s issues do not end there, with his current legal issues rumbling on following his assault of Covington at a Miami steakhouse back in March of this year.

Gilbert Burns intends on only signing up for five-round fights going forward.

Gilbert Burns is looking to do more fighting. Not just getting back in the Octagon quickly following his last loss, but he wants every fight of his to be five rounds.

His last bout with Khamzat Chimaev was a three-round main card fight on the UFC 273 fight card. Before that fight was official, Burns was calling for it to be a five-round affair. His wish was not granted, and he wound up losing by a unanimous decision.

Going forward, Burns intends to make sure he gets the time he needs.

“I just want five rounds, even if it is the co-main or the one before, you gotta do five rounds,” Burns said to ESPN. “I’m not doing three rounds no more, brother. Nobody is calling me out, but if you call me out be ready to do five rounds because I’m just going to make that thing in my contract. So next fight they’re gonna give me a new contract and then they say, just for him, he is only doing five rounds.”

Also in the interview, Burns had a few names he would like to face next. He mentioned Nate Diaz, Colby Covington, a rematch with Chimaev, and Jorge Masvidal. Of those names mentioned, he thinks the UFC is leaning toward Masvidal. He also believes that would be an exciting matchup, the kind that people want to see for five rounds.

Burns underwent surgery on his hand following the last loss and might be out of competition until the fall. He is looking at a possible return in September, October, or November.

UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns has some opponents in mind for rising contender Sean Brady’s next appearance in the Octagon.

While Khamzat Chimaev has taken most of the headlines in regards to unbeaten welterweights rising the ranks, Brady has quietly snuck into the top 10 at 170 pounds after adding five UFC wins to his perfect record, which now sits at 15-0.

In his most recent outing, the 29-year-old made a statement by dominating Michael Chiesa, then-ranked at #6, with his imposing wrestling game in the UFC Vegas 43 co-main event.

Now, having risen to #9 on the ladder, Brady is looking to make some serious noise when he makes his sixth walk to the Octagon, but it appears he’s having some trouble finding a dance partner.

Having taken to Twitter to express his frustration at not being booked yet, one of Brady’s fellow top-10 welterweights has now played matchmaker for him.

During a recent interview with MMA Underground while in attendance for Eagle FC 47, #4-ranked Gilbert Burns was asked about Brady’s complaints. After sympathizing with the Philadelphian’s situation, “Durinho” even suggested that he could be tempted to face Brady should he be on the receiving end of a callout.

“I will say the same as him, I’ve never heard my name out of no one’s mouth in the division. No one calls me out… Call me out, and we shall see,” said Burns. “Maybe it’ll get on my nerves if you say my name and I might give you the opportunity. But, right now, I want (Jorge) Masvidal and Colby (Covington)… But welcome brother, no one calls me out as well.”

But with his sights set on Masvidal and Covington, Burns looked elsewhere for a more logical opponent for Brady.

Burns Assesses What “Makes Sense” For Brady

After discussing who’s available high up the welterweight ladder, Burns settled on two potential next opponents for Brady.

“We’ve got to get the division moving, I agree with Sean Brady. Why not Belal (Muhammad)? He’s right there, no opponent. I think they should face each other. Who else is available? He just beat Chiesa… ‘Wonderboy?’ He’s right there, too, no dancing partner. Sean Brady, call out Belal Muhammad and call out ‘Wonderboy.’ I think that makes sense for you.”

Muhammad recently got the better of Burns’ friend and teammate Vicente Luque in a UFC Fight Night main event last month. With the victory, which extended his unbeaten streak to eight, Muhammad entered the top five.

The second choice, Stephen Thompson, currently sits at #7 having lost consecutive fights to Burns and Muhammad. While that matchup would appear to make sense based on the rankings, “Wonderboy” has previously suggested that he’ll be looking to avoid a wrestling-based opponent next time out.

A clash with “Remember The Name” would certainly test all of his grappling talents. Meanwhile, a date in the cage with “Wonderboy” would give Brady the opportunity to replicate Thompson’s past two defeats, which both came as a result of his wrestling deficiencies.

We’ll see if either bout comes to fruition in the coming weeks and months.

Do you agree with Gilbert Burns? Should Sean Brady face either Belal Muhammad or Stephen Thompson next?
