Gilbert Burns is expecting a war against Kamaru Usman.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Burns would be next in line to challenge Usman for the welterweight title as they will headline UFC 251 taking place July 11 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Burns and Usman, of course, are notably teammates at Sanford MMA under head coach Henri Hooft.

And although things are a bit awkward, especially as they share many of the same coaches, there are no hard feelings between the pair according to Burns. At least for now.

“It’s awkward. I just ran into him right now in training,” Burns told The Athletic. “He told me the same thing I said to him. He said, “Hey, I love you too, bro. Whatever happens, happens, you know. He said, “I love you too, bro. I know you have your family, I respect you, whatever happens, happens, nothing will change. Let’s leave it all up there.” I said, “You got it.” But, as of now, there’s nothing certain, so it was even a conversation — we say that stuff, and then don’t fight, you know? Then it’s an awkward thing (laughs).”

Burns: Usman Has More Tools Than Woodley

Burns became next in line following his impressive unanimous decision win over Tyron Woodley earlier this month at UFC Vegas. It put him on a four-fight winning streak ever since he made the move back up to 170 in August last year.

While he regarded the former champion as a monster, “Durinho” believes Usman will be an even tougher task not only because of his skillset, but also considering how their training sessions together have always been wars.

“He’s extremely tough. It will be a war,” Burns said. “All of our training sessions are wars. There’s none of that, “I won in training, he won in training.” Sure, but it’s war. I’ve never had easy training with him. He’s very skilled. He’s been improving a lot on the feet. He does the same system I do, which is Henry’s. He never lost his wrestling, he’s always trained wrestling a lot. He trains jiu-jitsu. He’s extremely strong. Has a good gas tank. Man — it will be a war.

“In my mind, that’s another monster. I had Woodley very much like a monster. When I fight, I like to be prepared for a monster. And it ended up that, after the third, fourth round — (Woodley) is still dangerous with that hand, but I didn’t feel that strength on the clinch, I didn’t feel danger with the kicks, it was mostly about being aware of his right hand. But I know Kamaru has a lot more stamina and a lot more tools. It’s an entirely different fight. Kamaru won’t have that rock in his right hand, but he will also hit hard. If he lands in the right spot, he can have me sitting down, too. I will have to be prepared for war.”

If Burns does go on to win the welterweight title against Usman, it would be one heck of a past 12 months for the Brazilian.

How do you see Usman vs. Burns playing out?

Usman Burns Diaz

Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns were quick to fire back at Nate Diaz.

After it was revealed that Usman would defend his welterweight title against teammates Burns in the UFC 251 headliner on July 11, Diaz slammed the title fight and mocked the pair for fighting for less money.

“This is what’s wrong with people claiming they’re fighters settling for less cause they know they’re not worth sh*t you should’ve fought the next guy in line not the guy who would take less cause he’s told too that’s why no one will remember you guys. This isn’t a title fight”

Diaz proceeded to take another jab at the pair.

Usman would respond to Diaz soon after with a number of tweets.

“Funny I didn’t hear you volunteering when they were looking for the next victim… ?????

“Your Bum Ass, the other “said guy” who just embarrassed your ass, and McNuggets Bum ass all ran and hid. So shut TF up and Sit TF down. Oh and don’t forget to buy the PPV ??? #UFC251

“Let’s state some facts here:

“Your Bum Ass”
•L’s in last (5 of 9) in 8year span
•12 L’s Total
•1-1 in last 4 years
•Refused to fight Woodley when offered title shot.

“Said Guy”
•13 L’s Total
•L to Damian Maia
Who was KO’d by Burns In rd 1.
•embarrassed ur Bum Ass

“Burns:
•6 Fight win streak in less than 2 year span.
•KO over Maia who defeated “said guy”
•(50-44) domination over #1 WW Woodley who you turned down for a title fight.
•Burns Is a true martial artist and not all talk. #UFC251

“Bottom line, if you got double digit L’s shut TF up and sit yo Bum Ass TF down. Oh and once again don’t forget to buy the PPV ???

“Durinho” also took a jab at Diaz’s record.

“Look this guy ?????????? @NateDiaz209 3 fights in the last 4 years! I’m going to do my 3rd fight in less than 5 months in 2020! Enough said! Just a reminder this fight will be the Champion x N1 Contender! Just do me a favor don’t blink your ? get your ? and buy the PPV”

Fighter pay will continue to be major topic in the coming weeks.

However, it’s hard to see why Burns wouldn’t accept the opportunity, especially given he only moved up to welterweight in August last year.

Nate Diaz took to Twitter this afternoon to blast the newly announced welterweight title fight on Fight Island this July at UFC 251.

As top contender Jorge Masvidal and the UFC hit an impasse in contract talks, the title shot was given to Gilbert Burns, whom recently sky rocketed up the rankings after an impressive victory over Tyron Woodley.

Check out what the Stockton, California native had to say about the fight announcement.

“This is what’s wrong with people claiming they’re fighters settling for less cause they know they’re not worth shit you should’ve fought the next guy in line not the guy who would take less cause he’s told too that’s why no one will remember youguys This isn’t a title fight.”

Diaz was last seen in the octagon in November 2019 where he was defeated by Jorge Masvidal. Since then, Masvidal has looked like the number one contender to Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title, with rumors of a fight taking place this summer. However, Masvidal has recently been critical of his pay and other fighters pay as well, something Diaz has been a vocal of throughout his career. That is when UFC President Dana White announced on First Take this morning, that Gilbert Burns would be recieving the Welterweight title shot next month.

What do you think? Is Nate Diaz right to criticize the title fight announcement? Are you excited for Woodley vs Burns?

Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will make the second defence of his title against Brazilian submission specialist Gilbert Burns at UFC 251 on July 11. The fight will headline the promotion’s first card on the much talked about fight island.

Earlier today the UFC announced ‘Fight Island’ is located in Abu Dhabi and will host four events in July. The first event will be UFC 251 that is absolutely stacked with three title fights so far.

Usman hasn’t fought since beating Colby Covington at UFC 245 late last year. He was set to face Jorge Masvidal next but a pay dispute between the UFC and ‘Gamebred’ has ended all chances of that fight happening next. In steps Burns who’s fresh off the biggest win of his career. The 33-year-old dominated former champion, Tyron Woodley, over five rounds last month.

Elsewhere on the card Alexander Volkanovski will make the first defence of his featherweight title against former champion Max Holloway. The pair were originally set to fight on June 6 in Perth, Australia, but due to the ongoing global pandemic that fight has been pushed to July 11.

The final title fight on the card will be between bantamweight contenders Jose Aldo and Petr Yan who will duke it out for the 135lb title recently relinquished by retiring champ Henry Cejudo.
