Nate Diaz took to Twitter this afternoon to blast the newly announced welterweight title fight on Fight Island this July at UFC 251.

As top contender Jorge Masvidal and the UFC hit an impasse in contract talks, the title shot was given to Gilbert Burns, whom recently sky rocketed up the rankings after an impressive victory over Tyron Woodley.

Check out what the Stockton, California native had to say about the fight announcement.

“This is what’s wrong with people claiming they’re fighters settling for less cause they know they’re not worth shit you should’ve fought the next guy in line not the guy who would take less cause he’s told too that’s why no one will remember youguys This isn’t a title fight.”

Diaz was last seen in the octagon in November 2019 where he was defeated by Jorge Masvidal. Since then, Masvidal has looked like the number one contender to Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title, with rumors of a fight taking place this summer. However, Masvidal has recently been critical of his pay and other fighters pay as well, something Diaz has been a vocal of throughout his career. That is when UFC President Dana White announced on First Take this morning, that Gilbert Burns would be recieving the Welterweight title shot next month.

What do you think? Is Nate Diaz right to criticize the title fight announcement? Are you excited for Woodley vs Burns?

Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will make the second defence of his title against Brazilian submission specialist Gilbert Burns at UFC 251 on July 11. The fight will headline the promotion’s first card on the much talked about fight island.

Earlier today the UFC announced ‘Fight Island’ is located in Abu Dhabi and will host four events in July. The first event will be UFC 251 that is absolutely stacked with three title fights so far.

Usman hasn’t fought since beating Colby Covington at UFC 245 late last year. He was set to face Jorge Masvidal next but a pay dispute between the UFC and ‘Gamebred’ has ended all chances of that fight happening next. In steps Burns who’s fresh off the biggest win of his career. The 33-year-old dominated former champion, Tyron Woodley, over five rounds last month.

Elsewhere on the card Alexander Volkanovski will make the first defence of his featherweight title against former champion Max Holloway. The pair were originally set to fight on June 6 in Perth, Australia, but due to the ongoing global pandemic that fight has been pushed to July 11.

The final title fight on the card will be between bantamweight contenders Jose Aldo and Petr Yan who will duke it out for the 135lb title recently relinquished by retiring champ Henry Cejudo.

Gilbert Burns

UFC President Dana White is in favor of top welterweight contender Gilbert Burns being next in line for a welterweight title shot. Burns thrust his way into title contention after his dominant victory of #1 ranked Tyron Woodley last Saturday night in Vegas.

Following this one-sided bout, Burns called out Welterweight champ and training partner Kamaru Usman for the next title shot while also mentioning he’d be open to fights against top contenders Colby Covington and Leon Edwards.

White went on Steve’Os Podcast where he talked about the Welterweight title, “Burns told me that night, let’s turn this shit right round, I’ll fight Usman now. I’m ready. I love that kind of shit, When you’re that guy, it’s highly likely you’re getting that f*****g fight.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

Burns, winner of 6 straight with his past 2 against legends in Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia, seems poised for a crack at the champ Kamaru Usman. Although, it seemed as if top contender Jorge Masvidal would get the title shot against Usman in July, the company might have different plans for him.

Speaking to MMA Fighting the Brazilian revealed he has offered to fight Usman at UFC 251 and is currently waiting to hear back from the UFC bosses, he said.

“We’re waiting for the UFC’s decision. I volunteered to fight for the UFC title in July if they want. I know UFC 251 is on July 11, and I volunteered for it. If they want it, I’ll fight for the belt on the 11th, or I can fight the No. 2 or No. 3 [fighter] in the rankings, whoever the UFC wants. I’ve already volunteered, and I will honor that. When I volunteer for a date, I make sure I’m ready for it in case something happens. I’ll get back to the gym on Monday.”

The welterweight division is stacked and loaded with top level talent. So many top contenders vying for a title shot. Gilbert Burns, Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards all have great cases.
