Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has revealed his plan to take Brazilian submission specialist Gilbert Burns into the later rounds at UFC on ESPN 9 this weekend. Woodley exuded confidence while speaking with MMA Junkie ahead of his fight with Burns who he says has a good but limited fighting style.
“This fight in particular with Gilbert Burns is, I’m confident because of who I am and what I’m doing,” Woodley said. “I’m aware of what he does, I’m aware of how he is – he’s got a nice little left hook, uppercut, got some knees and flying knees, kicks and punches and calf kicks. I haven’t really seen much different from him. I’ve seen his style, and I’ve kind of gotten it broken down, but the element of surprise is a mother(expletive).”
After taking more than a year off from competition Woodley is ready to get back to championship level fights, starting with five, five minute rounds against Burns.
“When you start doing stuff they don’t expect you to do, that’s what I think he won’t be prepared for. He won’t be prepared to get exhausted and drained, and I wanted this. I had the option to fight this fight in a three-round fight, and I wanted a five-round fight because he ain’t never fought five rounds before, not in the UFC, not to my knowledge.”
Woodley believes his experience of going the full 25 minutes in his first three title defences will serve him well against Burns who he thinks will struggle to cope down the stretch.
“So three rounds, starting off strong or loafing in the beginning to finish strong is not going to work, is not going to work in a five-round fight,” Woodley said, “That’s what my goal is: Just take him in that deep water and just trying to drown him.”

Former Interim Welterweight champion Colby Covington has shared his opinion on why the UFC booked former champion Tyron Woodley to face rising contender Gilbert Burns on May 30th.
During an interview with Mike Heck at MMAFighting.com Covington stated he believes the UFC did not want to give Woodley the fight against him instead he believes they are looking for Tyron to prove himself in a matchup against Burns.
“You know to be honest Mike the real reason they didn’t get this fight is because the UFC didn’t want to give him the fight. You know the thing is his last fight he looked so washed up Mike, The UFC wants to see if he has anything left in the tank you know, so they want to see if he can prove himself to earn the losing ass whooping paycheck to me. So you know this is a test by the UFC they’re making him fight some kid named Dilbert, you know nobody even knows who Dilbert is. So you know, we’ll see if he passes that test and he can earn this ass whooping paycheck losing paycheck to me but you know, who knows man.”
Covington continued on stating that Woodley never wanted to fight him.
“It just sucks you know but he never wanted to fight me man, i’m the first guy to ever scare the champion into elective surgery. Elective surgery Mike. The guy was ready to fight Nate Diaz some lightweight scrub wash up you know. We know he’s the Stockton soy boy, he was ready to fight him but he wouldn’t fight Colby Chaos Covington when i had the real Welterweight championship, the peoples championship. Americas championship, More importantly Donald Trumps favorite fighter.

The event is to be headlined by former Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley facing rising contender Gilbert Burns in a bout that could determine the next title challenger.
Tyron Woodley will be making his first walk to the octagon since losing his belt to the current champion Kamaru Usman in 2019. Originally scheduled to face Leon Edwards in February, that fight had to be called off due to the rise of the coronavirus pandemic making it impossible to hold events.
Gilbert Burns is coming off a knockout win against Damian Maia earlier this year at UFC Brasilia. Since this victory Burns has had his target set on a matchup with the former champion, taking to social media shortly after volunteering to face Woodley on any event the UFC needed.
The UFC hopes to hold the event at their private facility (the UFC Apex) in Las Vegas, however, they will still need to get approval from the Nevada state athletic commission before they are able to use the site for events. The UFC expects a verdict on this at a meeting on May 27th.
The entire event will be available on ESPN and ESPN+.
