Jorge Masvidal may have taken his love for Scarface a little too far, drawing the ire of UFC fans.
Gamebred’ is just days away from his return to the Octagon after more than a year on the sidelines. Riding a three-fight losing streak, Jorge Masvidal will look to get back into the win column against the No. 5 ranked welterweight contender Gilbert Burns in the UFC 287 co-main event this Saturday night.
Ahead of his highly anticipated return, ‘Gamebred’ was featured on Episode 1 of UFC 287 Embedded. During his segment, the Miami native decided to show off some of his “hardware” while quoting Tony Montana, the main character from the classic 1983 Brian De Palma film.
“Say hello to my little friend,” Masvidal said. “Usually don’t like, you know, showing the pieces off and stuff. But you’re in my casa, right? My house. So we’ll show you some of the hardware we keep on deck. It’s not loaded, don’t worry. But this is just in case anybody gets personal.”
It was then that Jorge Masvidal pointed the gun directly at the cameraman, a move that quickly drew criticism from fans online. You can watch the segment in question at the 7:35 mark below.
“Did he really point a gun at the UFC Embedded camera man and actually pull the trigger? That’s just nuts. (I know he said it’s not loaded but how many people have died/been wounded after thinking that?) Wow… just wow.”
One commenter can’t imagine toting a gun around on camera is the smartest move for a man who will be facing a criminal trial for allegedly assaulting a co-worker outside of a Miami steakhouse in March 2022.
“Hilarious if the fight got canceled cuz Jorge got arrested for violating bail conditions.”
Jorge Masvidal is expected to go on trial on May 22 following a pre-trial hearing scheduled for May 10. Gamebred’ is accused of attacking former friend turned bitter rival Colby Covington in Miami weeks removed from their UFC 272 clash.
Covington earned a unanimous decision victory, but the rivalry was far from over in the eyes of Masvidal. If convicted, ‘Gamebred’ faces up to 15 years in prison on the aggravated battery charge in Florida.

Former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has admitted that he will likely weigh up his career in mixed martial arts come the conclusion of his homecoming this weekend in Florida – particularly if he suffers defeat to opponent, Gilbert Burns.
Masvidal, the current #11 ranked welterweight contender, makes his Octagon return for the first time in over a year this Saturday night in front of a partizan Miami, Florida crowd in his homecoming fight, clashing with one-time title chaser, Burns in a pivotal co-headlining slot.
Featuring prior to a middleweight title fight, Masvidal and Burns’ clash comes prior to a blockbuster championship rematch between Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya in a bout which promises fireworks.
Sidelined since suffering a one-sided decision loss to former training partner, Colby Covington at UFC 272 back in March of last year, Miami veteran, Jorge Masvidal had dropped a pair of knockout and decision losses to former welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman before his loss to outspoken Clovis native, Covington.
Jorge Masvidal weighing up his future ahead of UFC 287
Without a victory since a symbolic BMF championship win against promotional veteran, Nate Diaz back in 2019, Masvidal admitted that he would likely hang up his gloves from mixed martial arts should he lose to Rio de Janeiro finisher, Burns on home soil at UFC 287.
“This could be the last one,” Jorge Masvidal said during the UFC 287 Countdown show. “If I lose, I’m pretty much calling it quits. But a win against Gilbert (Burns), means that things are heading in the right direction. So, if I roll the dice, and I do everytrhing right, I’m going for it all.” (Transcribed by CurrentSportz)
Despite maintaining he will likely consider his fighting future should he suffer a loss to Burns on Saturday, Masvidal claimed he would fighting welterweight champion, Leon Edwards for division gold with a win over Brazilian.
Ahead of his UFC 287 co-headlining return next weekend against soon-to-be common-foe, Jorge Masvidal, one-time welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns claims that no matter where a potential future fight with former interim gold holder, Colby Covington lands, he’s confident of finishing the Clovis native. Returning to the Octagon next weekend in Miami, Florida – Burns, a resident of the ‘Sunshine State’ is likely entering enemy-territory in his pivotal co-main event slot against hometown favorite, Masvidal, as the duo attempt to leapfrog the aforenoted, Covington into the welterweight title picture.
Gilbert Burns welcomes potential fight with Colby Covington in the future
Welcoming the possibility of fighting the #2 ranked challenger, Covington before they hang up their respective gloves, Burns claimed that he would be confident of either knocking out or submitting the former.
“I hope, I hope because I’ve been calling this guy (Colby Covington) out forever,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Junkie during a recent interview. “He’s been smart. He sits out and fights Tyron Woodley and then – relax. And then he fights for the title again. He picks another guy that’s not in his prime coming from another loss, (Jorge) Masvidal. Then he wins and gets another title shot. He’s been smart. I hope that one day we can get this [fight] done.”
“I believe I can finish Colby,” Gilbert Burns continued. “I’m a dangerous striker, and if he takes me down, thank you. So, I hope that fight happens. Now, I’m 100 percent focused on Masvidal, but that fight [with Covington] is going to happen, I believe.”
Jorge Masvidal plans to make a modern art masterpiece using Gilbert Burns’ face next month when the two welterweight standouts square off inside the Octagon. ‘Gamebred’ will attempt to get back into the win column for the first time since 2019, but it will be no easy task when he meets No. 5 ranked contender […]
5 ranked contender Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 on April 8. Before his highly anticipated return to action, Jorge Masvidal shared some honest thoughts on his next opponent and creatively labeled the next chapter of his combat sports career during an interview with MMA Junkie.
“This chapter would be Gilbert ‘The Stepping Stone’ Burns,” Masvidal said. “It’s no disrespect to Gilbert and stuff, ‘cause I think he’s a good competitor. He comes to fight, you know? And things like that for the most part. But we’ve never been on the same skillset. And then as far as like gameness goes, as far as like toughness and durability and you know, that sturdiness, he’s never had it either.
“He gets cracked and he starts skating. So I don’t know, he’s good in the jiu-jitsu world but his wrestling ain’t that. And I’ve only been focusing these last six months on making sure that I can deal with these wrestlers efficiently. Get to positions efficiently, not waste as much energy” (transcription by MMA News).
Jorge Masvidal is Ready to Make a Statement Against Gilbert Burns
Jorge Masvidal plans to display his artistic side at UFC 287, using his large palette of skills to paint a violent picture with Gilbert Burns’ face as the canvas.
“So I’m gonna tell you that I’m gonna paint my Van Gogh on Gilbert’s face man. With elbows, knees, kicks, takedown defense, takedown offense. All of that good stuff, I’m gonna bring it. And just like when I started my career, just go out there and fight and have fun. It’s not a game because there’s a lot I risk, but at the same time this is my pickup basketball game, this is my soccer game, this is my baseball game, this is what I enjoy doing. So I don’t need to do anything any more than that, just go out there and do it.”
Despite being on a three-fight losing skid, Jorge Masvidal could very well be one big win away from a UFC title opportunity against reigning welterweight champion Leon Edwards. ‘Gamebred’ could skyrocket to the top five of the division with a win over Burns, but more importantly, there is already a history between Edwards and himself. That could play a big role in the UFC’s decision-making once next month’s pay-per-view at Miami-Dade Arena is in the books.
