ESPN has issued a statement on Ariel Helwani following recent criticism from UFC president Dana White.

White notably called Helwani “a douche” for his video response to Gina Carano’s controversial social media tweet that saw her get fired from “The Mandalorian” last week.

Carano’s tweet compared being a conservative in America today to Jews living in the period of Nazi Germany which naturally drew plenty of criticism and eventually led to her firing.

Helwani is Jewish and being a friend of Carano’s, was naturally disappointed by her tweet as he put out an eight-minute video giving his thoughts on the situation.

Of course, this rubbed White the wrong way as he believed Helwani — who he is on bad terms with — was trying to make it about himself.

“Leave Gina alone,” White said on Friday when asked about her situation. “Listen, we make mistakes. We all make mistakes. For everybody to go in on her – I love how Ariel Helwani made it all about him. It was all about him. Such a douche.”

Many ESPN colleagues came to Helwani’s defense and after initially declining to comment, ESPN finally release a statement, albeit a very short one.

“Ariel is a valued colleague and an exceptional MMA reporter. His record speaks for itself,” ESPN said in a statement to the New York Post.

It says nothing about White’s comments but that is unsurprisingly natural given ESPN’s partnership with the UFC that has been ongoing since 2019.

What do you make of the situation?

Former MMA fighter Gina Carano has continually made headlines over the past year, due to a plethora of controversial Twitter posts.

However, her most recent post, comparing the current political landscape to that of Nazi Germany, appears to have been the final straw for some.

After retiring from MMA, Carano moved into the world of acting. She has most recently featured as a prominent supporting character in Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian. Unfortunately for Carano, due to her social media activity, Lucasfilm’s have officially decided to cut ties with the former Strikeforce athlete.

At the UFC 258 pre-fight media scrum, UFC president Dana White sat down with reporters to discuss the event. As the scrum was about to wrap up, one reporter asked a final question, getting White’s thoughts on the Carano situation. White had the follwoing to say:

“Leave Gina alone. Listen, we make mistakes. We all make mistakes. For everybody to go in on her – I love how Ariel Helwani made it all about him. It was all about him. Such a douche.”

Dana White and Ariel Helwani have had a long-running feud, dating back several years. However, the reaction from Helwani that White referred to, was an Instagram video the ESPN reporter posted. The video is a response to several fans asking Helwani’s thoughts on the situation, which as Helwani points out, is a relevant question considering the circumstances. As Helwani states “because of the fact that she’s a famous former mixed martial artist. Because I’ve talked about her a lot. Because I’ve interviewed her a bunch, and I’ve talked about her impact on my career early on. (And) because I’m Jewish.” It does stand to reason that Helwani has as much right as anyone to weigh in on this situation.

Former professional mixed martial artist, Gina Carano has released a statement amid her recent firing from Disney series, The Mandalorian — following a string of recent inflammatory posts on her social media platforms.

Carano, who was handed her walking papers by Disney and sacked from her role in their flagship series, The Mandalorian drew major criticism after she shared a post on her official Instagram account, comparing the treatment of conservatives in the United States to that of the treatment and oppression of the Jewish community in Nazi Germany.

In an interview with Deadline in the twenty-four hours following her firing from Disney and the Star Wars series, Carano announced she was taking on another film project — in tandem with the website, The Daily Wire.A statement provided by Carano details how her voice is now “freer” than ever before, and how the “totalitarian mob” cannot “cancel us if we don’t let them.

“The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered,” Carano explained. “I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.

The Daily Wire released their own statement in tow with Carano’s — detailing how they “could not be more excited” to be working with the Dallas, Texas native and how Disney and Lucasfilm, “dumped” the 38-year-old.

We could not be more excited to be working with Gina Carano, an incredible talent dumped by Disney and Lucasfilm for offending the authoritarian Holloway Left,” The Dail Wire’s co-founder, Ben Shapiro said to Deadline. “This is what Daily Wire exists to do: provide an alternative not just for consumers, but for creators who refuse to bow to the mob.

We’re eager to bring Gina’s talent to Americans who love her, and we’re just as eager to show Hollywood that if they want to keep cancelling those who think differently, they’ll just be helping us build the X-wing that takes down their Death Star.

As a professional mixed martial artist, Carano amassed a 7-1 record and is regarded as a pioneer for the sport in North America. Calling time on her career back in August of 2009, Carano suffered a first-round knockout loss to current Bellator MMA featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg in the inaugural Strikeforce featherweight title fight.

Gina Carano

Between 2005 and 2010 Gina Carano was one of the most influential mixed martial artists in the industry.

Carano, Cristine ‘Cyborg’ Santos, and a few other notable names were all that kept women’s MMA going, in an industry that was at the time, a near completely male-dominated sport.

Carano competed in a variety of promotions, including Strikeforce and EliteXC, amassing a 7-1 record.

However, since retiring in 2009, following her only professional loss, Carano has since transitioned into acting.

Most recently she has appeared in The Mandolorian, Lucasfilm’s break out Star Wars spin-off. The show has recently finished its second season, in which Carano appeared in a semi-prominent role. Since the season’s completion, Lucasfilm has announced that Carano has been cut from her role, due to some of her posts on social media.

A Lucasfilm spokesperson released the following statement:

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable”(via Variety.com)

This statement was released in response to an Instagram post by Carano, that compared the current politcal landscape in America to that of Germany in WWII. The post said the following:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children,” Carano wrote Instagram. “Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views” (via BJPenn.com)

It would appear that Lucasfilm will not be working with Carano at all in the future, despite their plethora of upcoming spin-offs that her character may have once been involved in. The hashtag, #FireGinaCarano has trended multiple times over 2020. Primarily in regard to her posts on Twitter, supporting Donald Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was rigged. It appears that her accumulative outspoken social media posts have added up and have since forced Lucasfilm to take action.
