Nate Diaz

Although there is no doubt Nate Diaz will be celebrating following his victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279, the Stockton native showed no interest in taking part with current trends by doing a ‘Shoey’ to sign off on his final win.

The UFC veteran was able to snatch up a guillotine choke in the 4th round to secure him a potential last win in the UFC as he looks to exit the promotion for the time being. Speaking to the media at the post-fight press conference, following his win Nate quickly laughed at the idea of drinking anything from a shoe like so many fighters have done so recently, simply stating:

“That’s Gross.”

So, whilst drinking from a shoe is not currently on Nate Diaz’s agenda, he was quick to welcome all those in attendance to his post-fight party when he jumped on the mic with Joe Rogan to reflect on the night and his time within the promotion.

It now seems Diaz will step away from the sport to pursue new ventures with many fans expecting him to eventually take part in this transition to boxing like many former MMA fighters have done, leading to a potential matchup against YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul.

Nate Diaz emerges victorious at UFC 279: Main card recap

In what turned out to be a much better event than people anticipated following the reshuffle. Let us take a quick look at just what went down on the main card of UFC 279.

In the opening feature bout, Johnny Walker was able to return to the winning column after he secured a first-round submission over the brawling Ion Cutelaba. However, Walker did not get to savor the moment as the Brazilian was quickly kicked out of the venue following his victory.

Irene Aldana was able to create history when she landed the first up-kick-body shot to finish a fight after a back-and-forth affair against Macy Chiasson.

Daniel Rodriguez and Li Jingliang went the full fifteen minutes after a back-and-forth affair where both men showed their abilities in a heavy striking affair. Ultimately it was Rodriguez who had his hand raised, not to the joy of many fans, after beating The Leech by a split decision.

Khamzat Chimaev was able to continue his dominant ways since joining the promotion as he quickly dispatched Kevin Holland in the first round via submission.

And to top it off, Nate Diaz went out on a high as he and fellow UFC veteran Tony Ferguson put on a fan-friendly affair which saw the Stockton native secure a submission victory with exactly 2:09 seconds left on the clock, a fitting way for the ‘209’ to end his time in the promotion.

Kevin Holland has advised the former welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, to leave the sport of Mixed Martial Arts following his crushing KO loss at the hands of Leon Edwards.

Holland himself has recently entered the welterweight division and things have gotten off to a promising start for the ‘Trailblazer’ who has gone 2-0 since making the switch to the 170-pound division. UFC 279 will see Holland return to the octagon to take on the undefeated prospect, Khamzat Chimaev, in a 180-pound catchweight bout. Originally slated to take on Daniel Rodriguez, Holland now faces a new opponent following Chimaev’s staggering weight miss which forced the UFC into reshuffling the card.

Despite stating that Usman had handled the loss well after dropping his belt to the British Edwards, Kevin Holland still believes it is in his best interest to move on from the sport as he explained at the UFC 279 media day.

“I think he has kinda got that head to him where he thought he was invincible, and I think it’s kinda hard to come back from that when you’ve been on top for so long. Kinda like Anderson Silva when he was trying to get his belt back. I just don’t really think Usman’s gonna get it back. If Leon Edwards shows up and fights the whole time like how he fought in the first and the fifth, I think he finishes Usman again.”

Kevin Holland doubts Kamaru Usman’s ability to bounce back following his KO loss

Despite reigning supreme inside the UFC’s welterweight division in his run-up to and time spent with the title, Holland doesn’t believe Usman will be able to return to his former self and that he may be better suited to leaving the fight game entirely.

“And if he does get the fuckin’ belt, I think that Chimaev will take the belt from him. I just don’t think Usman has what he used to have in him anymore. I think it’s movie time. I think it’s time for him to go get paid.” (Transcribed by MMANews)

It seems almost inevitable that Kamaru Usman will have the opportunity to try and exact revenge over Leon Edwards and reclaim the welterweight strap, and in doing so prove Kevin Holland wrong entirely.

However, it seems Usman may not have the first shot at Leon Edwards as the welterweight champion with rumours circulating that ‘Rocky’ will make his first defence in the UK against long-standing bitter rival Jorge Masvidal.

Do you agree with Kevin Holland’s comments on the former champion?

Conor McGregor has shown his respect to Nate Diaz as the Stockton-native heads into his final fight inside the UFC when he takes on Tony Ferguson later tonight in the main event of UFC 279.

The legacies of both men will forever be intertwined for the entertainment they provided during their rivalry whilst competing in the UFC. Now as it seems Diaz will fight under the promotion one final time McGregor took the opportunity to applaud his fellow competitor on what has been an illustrious career.

“Congrats Nate Diaz on making it to the end of his contractual obligations with the UFC, and as a bonafide superstar goer. An incredible feat. Fair play.

Our trilogy will happen.”

Diaz was the first man to beat Conor McGregor inside the UFC when he stunned the world by submitting the Irishmen in the 2nd round of their first matchup at UFC196. McGregor would ultimately exact his revenge when he secured a majority decision victory over his foe five months later at UFC 202. The fights themselves delivered both times, but outside of the octagon, both parties delivered even further by helping to create a massive buzz around the sport.

Nate Diaz headlines UFC 279 vs Tony Ferguson

In what has been arguably one of the most frantic fight weeks we have ever seen, Nate Diaz will now headline UFC 279 in what fans perceive as a legends matchup when he takes on fellow promotional veteran, Tony Ferguson.

Originally slated to face the undefeated prospect, Khamzat Chimaev, that original matchup went up in smoke following the Chechen fighter missing weight by a staggering 7.5 pounds after not being medically cleared to continue cutting weight. Ferguson himself was scheduled to take on fan-favorite Li Jingliang in his return to the welterweight division but following the knowledge of Chimaev’s weight miss the UFC has opted to adjust these matchups to suit.

Now in what many believe is a much-improved card, the following matchups will take place at UFC 279.

Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kevin Holland

Li Jingliang vs. Daniel Rodriguez

Every other originally scheduled bout will continue as normal.

A much more fitting ending for Nate Diaz’s career inside the UFC sharing the octagon with Tony Ferguson. Just how excited are you for this new restructured main card of UFC 279?

Do you expect UFC 279 to deliver a better card following these adjustments?

UFC 279 has undoubtedly been one of the most unique fight weeks so far. At the time of writing one half of the main event, Khamzat Chimaev is currently 7.5 pounds overweight, and questions are now circulating about whom Nate Diaz will face in the main event of UFC 279.

Prior to all this commotion, Andreas Michael was full of praise for his student following his confrontation with Kevin Holland and Team Diaz backstage which ultimately led to the press conference being canceled.

Despite the rumors circulating Andreas Michael has claimed the chaos ensuing yesterday’s incident had been exaggerated greatly however not everyone left the way they entered.

“What happened was that Khamzat went inside by himself, then he came and it started with Kevin Holland and gave him, like, a boot in the chest.”

“Then they started whatever they’re doing and then the Diaz crew came in and they started doing what they were doing. But nobody got injured, thank God.”

Andreas Michael responds to rumours surrounding Darren Till

One of the rumors circulating throughout social media following the incident was that Darren Till had been stabbed during the ordeal. Something that clearly was never going to be true. However to put minds at ease after some regarding the entire matter and to get the truth out Michael spoke on Till on his social media ensuring all that the scouser was in a good way.

“Darren didn’t visit the hospital, so everything was good, guys,” Michael said. “That’s what happened.

“We’re here to fight in the cage, not in the streets. Fifty-to-one, things like that — sportsmen, sportsmen, that’s what we are. Sportsmen. So let’s f****** be sportsmen and stop all this s***. On Saturday, we’ve got a fight coming up and that’s the most important thing.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

UFC No.6 ranked middleweight Paulo Costa has stated that Khamzat Chimaev is afraid to show his face following an altercation at the UFC’s Performance Institute during UFC 279 fight week.

Khamzat Chimaev is set to face Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 279 at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, in what is expected to be the Stockton-natives final appearance inside a UFC octagon. Despite having the spotlight very much upon him as he main events a UFC PPV for the first time, Chimaev did not hesitate from exchanging in a fiery war of words with Brazilian middleweight Paulo Costa.

Following the pair’s interaction, Paulo Costa believes the undefeated prospect is afraid of him and that, during their confrontation, he truly did not want things to escalate into a fight. Speaking to TheMacLife, Costa revealed that he felt Chimaev was simply playing up for the camera, and had he wanted to, the pair could have settled their differences there and then.

“It was just me, Jake Shields, and Tamara, my girlfriend. But he was not there to fight, he just wanted to talk some s***. And now he is hiding. I came here for a couple of days after that, maybe he’s hiding in some cave, some hole, I don’t know. I didn’t see him anymore.” (Transcribed by MirrorSport)

Paulo Costa welcomes a fight with Robert Whittaker

Following on from his battle with Luke Rockhold at UFC 278, Costa has expressed his interest in a potential matchup against the No.1 ranked middleweight contender Robert Whittaker.

Costa is heading into the final bout on his contract and therefore would like to have the opportunity to make a statement in what may potentially be his final matchup inside the promotion if he does not choose to re-sign. The Brazilian kept it short and sweet when asked about a potential matchup against the Australian after the former-interim champion expressed an interest in jumping up into the light heavyweight division.

‘Robert Whittaker is a very good fighter. I think he says he wants to move up to 205 but I hope he is able to fight me before that. If he decides to move right now, I respect him.”

Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, has recently released a video showing off his MMA ability following on from an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience.

As someone who is in control of one of the largest social media companies, it comes as no surprise that the billionaire like many of us needs a release away from the office. A follower of the sport and someone who praises the skills of these athletes Mark Zuckerberg put his techniques on display for the world to see.

Speaking to Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg reveals how his interest in the sport came about during the pandemic.

“How did I not know about it till right now?”

“Since COVID, I got super into surfing and foiling, and then really into MMA. I know a lot of people who do it. There’s actually this really interesting connection between people who surf and do jiu-jitsu.”

Mark Zuckerberg reveals his regret for not starting to train sooner in his life

Having competed within a sporting setting throughout his childhood but never anything like this Zuckerberg told Joe Rogan how he wished he had become involved from a younger age and how now he spends his time trying to convince his friends to come and join his within training at MMA gyms.

Zuckerberg has been training under BJJ/Judo black belt Dave Camarillo at his gym, Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu. Camarillo himself spent time mastering his trade under the watchful eye of Ralph Gracie and has since been passing on his knowledge to his students for over 20 years.

“My mom made me do three varsity sports and my life took a wrong turn when I chose to do fencing competitively instead of wrestling in high school or something,” he said. “There’s something so primal about it, I don’t know.”

“Since then, I’ve just introduced a bunch of my friends to it—we train together, and we like, wrestle together, and there’s a certain intensity to it that I like.”

Having felt the benefits, himself Zuckerberg implemented these sessions into his workplace offering all employees the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of grappling for free along with giving out free customized gis to entice them even further.

“There’s a lot of good parallels for philosophy of life and, like foiling and surfing, jiu-jitsu, MMA, I think it sort of teaches you about the flow and momentum of things.”(Transcribed by bloodyelbow)

Whether Mark Zuckerberg will opt to take a step further and begin competing remains to be seen. Although if he did one man who may be willing to trade blows with him is none other than UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett who called out the social media giant owner after he was banned from Instagram.
