Thiago Santos will make his return to the octagon against Glover Teixeira on September 12 in a battle between two of the very best in the light-heavyweight division. Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke news of the Santos vs. Teixeira matchup last night, he wrote on social media.

“Breaking: UFC in the process of finalizing Glover Teixeira vs. Thiago Santos to headline event on Sept. 12, per sources.”

The winner will likely become next in line for a shot at 205lb champion Jon Jones should he choose to continue fighting in the UFC. Jones has previously said he wishes to relinquish his title and sit out until the promotion pays him fairly. If his title does become vacant it seems likely the UFC will make a fight between Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz for the belt. The winner of that fight will then have to face off against either Santos or Teixeira in their first defence.

Santos is returning to the cage for the first time since dropping a split decision against Jones in June 2019. The Brazilian tore multiple ligaments in his left knee in the bout and has only just got back to full fitness. Santos is currently ranked #2 at light-heavyweight and holds several high-profile wins over the likes of Jan Blachowicz, Jimi Manuwa, Anthony Smith, and Jack Hermansson.

Teixeira has been super active lately, he currently rides a four-fight win streak. The 40-year-old Brazilian picked up a huge win against Anthony Smith at UFC Jacksonville earlier this year. Teixeira put a brutal beating on Smith in a fight he was an underdog heading into. He now sits at #5 in the division and on the cusp of another light-heavyweight title shot if he can get by Santos.

Who wins on September 12? Thiago Santos or Glover Teixeira?

Glover Teixeira believes he and Jan Blachowicz should fight next.

Teixeira is on a four-fight winning streak following his latest TKO victory over Anthony Smith at UFC Jacksonville last month.

Blachowicz, meanwhile, has won seven of his last eight fights and has been campaigning to fight current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones next.

However, there is uncertainty when it comes to Jones. “Bones” is currently embroiled in a spat with the UFC over fighter pay and even claimed he was vacating his title as he planned on taking time away from the sport.

There has been no real update since as to whether Jones has actually vacated his title. But in the meantime, Teixeira wants to face Blachowicz as he feels they are more deserving than anyone else to potentially face Jones next should he continue fighting.

“In my opinion, I’m looking forward to fighting for the title,” Teixeira told MMA Junkie. “I want to fight Jan Blachowicz because we’re both coming from – I mean, I come from four wins in a row, I believe he coming from four, five wins in a row something like that and who am I to say who’s going to fight next?”

Teixeira: Reyes, Santos Had Their Shot At Jones

Of course, Dominick Reyes was the last to fight Jones as he lost a close unanimous decision verdict back at UFC 247 in February. Many observers felt he did enough to win on the night as “The Devastator” has also since been campaigning to face Jones next in a rematch.

But as far as Teixeira is concerned, the likes of Reyes and Thiago Santos have already had their chance and should face each other to determine the next challenger after his fight with Blachowicz.

“Those guys had their chance,” Teixeira added. “They went in there, they fought for the title and they lost and they gotta come back and we fight to get back in there again. You don’t get rematches for a title unless you’re the champion.”

“I think me and Blachowicz, we should fight and those guys have to fight to get wins, maybe Thiago and Reyes have to fight to see who’s gonna win and who’s gonna fight for the title next.”

Do you agree with the Brazilian?

Teixeira A ‘Genius’ In Working Out And Training

Glover Teixeira’s recent resurgence is a result of his new hybrid system of training according to coach John Hackleman.

Teixeira recently defeated Anthony Smith via fifth-round TKO in the UFC Jacksonville headliner last week. After facing some early adversity, the Brazilian dominated the rest of the fight as he now enjoys a four-fight winning streak at the age of 40.

Teixeira is no stranger to bouncing back from adversity and using his conditioning to his advantage. After all, he did the same in his second-round submission win over the hard-hitting Ion Cutelaba last year as well.

And for Hackleman, this recent run from his pupil is a result of no longer overtraining but combining two different regiments — one from himself and one from the UFC Performance Institute.

“He has so many natural attributes and he has such a hard work ethic,” Hackleman told MMA Junkie. “So in conditioning – he has our ‘Pit’ conditioning program and that’s kinda well known, Joe Rogan’s talked about it, a lot of people talk about it. But with that said, some guys seem to take it to an extreme like Court McGee. Sometimes they train a little too hard that when it comes to fight time, that training has been left in the gym or they don’t have as much for the cage.

“Now, Glover trains as hard, he does the old ‘Pit’ training, but now he’s also doing some of that, I think it’s called PI, the UFC guys do so. They send him workouts to combine with ours, it seems to work like a charm because he tends to push a little too hard. But now with these PI guys, they’ve kind of kept him in check and give him different workouts for his other days and they’re shorter and more efficient than mine.”

Many complained about the late stoppage involving Teixeira and Smith. There notably seemed to be many moments where the 40-year-old could have maybe gone all out for the finish.

Instead, he remained calm and maintained his pace to eventually get the TKO in the fifth round. While others may have blown their wad in trying to get the finish, Teixeira’s conditioning ultimately helped him earn the stoppage.

“He’s a genius when it comes to working out and training,” Hackleman added. “So he’s taken those two and, on his own, created his own hybrid system of training. He’s taken the ‘Pit’ old school training, this PI training, put them together and you saw the results. That was the result of his conditioning.”

What do you think of Teixeira’s recent run?
