Light-heavyweight Anthony Smith was on the end of a brutal beatdown at the hands of former title challenger Glover Teixeira last night. The pair squared off in the main event at UFC Jacksonville at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Anthony Smith Suffers A Brutal Upset Loss

Smith entered the fight as favourite and lived up to that tag in the early goings. He consistently landed big right hands and it seemed a matter of time before one of them folded his 40-year-old opponent. Teixeira was able to eat all those shots before turning the tide and putting a beating on Smith. From the end of the second round, it was all Glover who was dominating the fight and hurting ‘Lionheart’ every time he landed.

In between rounds, Smith could be heard telling his corner his teeth had fallen out. Despite this he was allowed to fight on before the referee eventually stepped in and waved off the bout in the fifth and final round.

An amazing video has now emerged showing Teixeira reigning down strikes from the back mount position. Meanwhile Smith can be seen handing one of his teeth over to the referee for safe keeping. It really is crazy. Check out the clip below…

Since the event, Smith has confirmed he suffered a long and painful list of injuries during the fight. ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani revealed he had spoken with Smith post-fight before posting the following out on social media.

“Just spoke to Anthony Smith via text. Injuries suffered tonight: Broken nose, broken orbital bone, two missing teeth and a cut under his right eye. One tooth in front and one towards the back, he said. His real teeth.”

The head coach of Smith – Marc Montoya – previously told Brett Okamoto that he believed his fighters veneers had fallen out and this is a common occurrence in training meaning he wasn’t motivated to pull Smith from the fight.

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith was on the wrong side of a brutal beatdown against Glover Teixeira in the UFC Jacksonville main event. Smith started the fight well and was landing big right hands on a consistent basis. The tide quickly turned though and by the end of round two ‘Lionheart’ looked hurt and gassed trying to defend against the relentless Teixeira.

The fight dragged on into the fifth round with Smith absorbing a ridiculous amount of punishment. Eventually, the referee stepped in to wave off the fight although you could argue Smith’s corner should have made the call about five minutes earlier.

Anthony Smith Suffered Gruesome Injuries At UFC Jacksonville

Post-fight ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani revealed he had been in contact with Smith who filled him in on the long list of injuries he suffered against the 40-year-old Brazilian.

“Just spoke to Anthony Smith via text. Injuries suffered tonight: Broken nose, broken orbital bone, two missing teeth and a cut under his right eye. One tooth in front and one towards the back, he said. His real teeth.”

In between rounds, Smith was heard telling his coaches that his teeth were falling out. Despite this, he was allowed to go out and take more punishment from Teixeira. Brett Okamoto of ESPN spoke to Smith’s head coach Marc Montoya post-fight and he explained why the corner didn’t really react to their fighter complaining about losing teeth.

“Spoke briefly to Anthony Smith’s head coach Marc Montoya (@coachMMontoya). He said one thing people don’t realize is Anthony has veneers, that have fallen out before in practice. So, when Anthony said his teeth were falling out, their interpretation was different from viewers.”

After suffering such an extensive list of nasty injuries it’s safe to assume we won’t be seeing ‘Lionheart’ Smith fighting again any time soon. Props to him though for putting up a very brave performance against the rejuvenated Teixeira.

Should the corner of Anthony Smith have done more to protect their fighter?

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to mock Anthony Smith when he’s down.

Smith suffered a fifth-round TKO defeat to Glover Teixeira in the UFC Jacksonville headliner on Saturday night. “Lionheart” was notably dominated throughout the fight as he barely survived until the referee stopped the contest in the final round.

Jones — who already defeated both fighters — was keeping a close eye on the bout as he took to social media to give his live reactions.

“Anthony Smith talking about outlasting me to become a world champion, Negro please ?

“Man Uncle Glover ain’t playing tonight”

“Was starting to wonder if Anthony was going to last until the championship rounds. Glad he answered the bell”

Jones — who recently went back-and-forth with Smith last month following the latter’s home invasion — then decided to mock him further.

“It seems like almost everyone who trash talk me during their fight week ends up losing. These boys thinking about being the champ instead of focusing on what it takes to get there.”

“Bones” went a step further and referenced that incident before deleting the tweet.

Jones did find time to poke fun at himself too, especially as Teixeira, 40, was able to finish a fighter that he couldn’t.

“Lol you just shut me up for the night ?

In the end, it’s all fun and games for Jones.

“Haha it’s just rough entertainment at the end of the day. We are all always talking crap to each other and teasing each other. Pretty sure most these guys have tough skin, I know my skins become like an armadillo since joining the Ufc.”

It remains to be seen if Smith will agree with Jones on that count.
