A decorated former UFC champion is reportedly returning to the octagon this fall.

After serving an 18-month United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension for using the prohibited substance 7-Keto due to it including DHEA, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida will return to action against No. 7 Derek Brunson at October 28’s UFC Fight Night 119 from Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a report from Combate (via MMA Mania).Machida was last seen

Machida was last seen losing his previous bout to recent interim title contender Yoel Romero via vicious second-round stoppage at June 2015’s UFC Fight Night 70. The loss marked his second in a row after he was brutally submitted by Luke Rockhold in April 2015. Machida was then set to take on MMA legend Dan Henderson in a rematch of their UFC 157 snoozer at UFC on FOX 16 in April 2016, but his admittance to using 7-Keto forced the bout to be canceled.

Despite the recent downswing against the absolute top of the talented UFC middleweight division, Machida maintains a 22-9 record in MMA with nine of those wins coming by knockout.

He’ll meet another contender looking to fight his way up the ranks in Brunson, a pressuring knockout artist who recently got back on track with a massive knockout of the previously surging Daniel Kelly at this June’s UFC Fight Night 110. Prior to that, Brunson dropped a highly controversial decision to all-time legend Anderson Silva at February’s UFC 208 after getting knocked out by current interim champ Robert Whittaker last November.

UFC Fight Night 119 also features a pivotal light heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira and Misha Cirkunov, both fighters in need of a big win after recent losses.

A light heavyweight bout has been added to UFC Fight Night 119 on Oct. 28, 2017 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as former title challenger Glover Teixeira will take on Misha Cirkunov. The UFC announced this fight during the broadcast of last night’s (Aug. 5, 2017) UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City, Mexico.

The 37-year-old Teixeira was once considered to be one of the very best 205 pounders on the planet, and he still may be, but he’s currently lost two of his last three bouts. Those losses have both come via knockout to highly touted contenders Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson, while the win in that stretch came against Jared Cannonier.

Cirkunov, on the other hand, was riding an impressive eight fight win streak before running into the red hot Volkan Oezdemir this past May in Sweden. Despite being knocked out by Oezdemir in just 28 seconds, Cirkunov holds four UFC victories over the likes of Daniel Jolly, Alex Nicholson, Ion Cutelaba and Nikita Krylov.

UFC Fight Night 119 does not currently have a main event set.

In a week full of all-out hype and buzz surrounding Conor McGregr’s anticipated boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, Sunday’s (July 16, 2017) UFC Fight Night 113 from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, got lost amidst a sea of promotional overload when it aired two days after the exhausting world tour ended.

That lead to some dismal ratings for the Europe-based card, as MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer reported that UFC Fight Night Glasgow averaged a paltry 402,000 viewers throughout its 3:00-6:00 p.m EST afternoon slot, a number that ranked significantly lower than the most recent afternoon card on foreign soil, May 28’s UFC Fight Night 109 from Stockholm, Sweden which did 496,000 viewers.

That card went head-to-head with the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend in the United States, with top-ranked light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson outlasting Glover Teixeira over the course of a brutal, scintillating five-round affair. The Glasgow event featured Gunnar Nelson vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio in the featured fight, a bout that was solid enough but brought little casual name recognition. Meltzer stated that the fact the UFC Fight Night 109 headliner lasted into fifth allowed it to build an audience compared to Ponznibbio’s shocking 82-second knockout of Nelson.

Per Haljestam for USA TODAY Sports

The prelims for UFC Fight Night Glasgow featuring the retirement bout of longtime Scottish veteran Neil Seery, did 284,000 viewers compared to 353,000 for the preliminaries at UFC Fight Night 109.

As noted, UFC Fight Night Glasgow suffered from being an otherwise less-than-ballyhooed card in the days directly following the circus – or “s**show,” as Dana White dubbed it – that was the Mayweather vs. McGregor world tour, in addition to be ing in an odd time slot on Sunday afternoon.

While the UFC obviously has a huge payday coming (in conjunction with SHOWTIME) in Mayweather vs. McGregor on August 26, their own ratings have definitely been in the swamp this year. July 8’s UFC 213 preliminary card did the lowest ratings since 2014, a number that certainly effected by the pay-per-view (PPV) card losing its main event incredibly late in the game due to Amanda Nunes becoming ill and pulling out of her fight against Valentina Shevchenko.

Those numbers simply don’t bode well for the WME-IMG promotion, which has seen a disturbing turnaround in PPV sales and obviously overall ratings after several buy records were set during a blockbuster 2016 slate. It’s safe to say that a card airing from Scotland on a Sunday afternoon not involving any major stars is not the clearest reason or cause for concern, but at some point in 2017, the promotion has to start picking up some sort of momentum in 2017.

That should start with July 29’s packed UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, a stacked event featuring three title fights, the main of which being the anticipated Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones light heavyweight title rematch. If that doesn’t get some ratings numbers rising, it could be hard to imagine what will.

Although the UFC put together a solid main event, the viewership numbers for the event were not impressive. The promotion as well as FOX Sports might be surprised with how the viewership numbers were when they were made available on Wednesday morning.

The main card drew 496,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1, which is down from the UFC Fight Night 108 event’s main card that did 745,000 viewers. The prelims drew 353,000 viewers, which was up from UFC Fight Night 108 prelims that drew 320,000 viewers. The prelim numbers are still good as the average UFC Fight Night prelims on the TV Network were 730,000.

A light heavyweight bout between former title challengers Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira served as the main event. Volkan Oezdemir vs. Misha Cirkunov in a light heavyweight bout served as the co-main event. Rounding out the main card was Peter Sobotta vs. Ben Saunders in a welterweight bout, Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Omari Akhmedov in a welterweight bout, Oliver Enkamp vs. Nordine Taleb in a welterweight bout and Jack Hermansson vs. Alex Nicholson in a middleweight bout.

The pre-fight show pulled in 109,000 viewers. The post-fight show did 277,000 viewers, which is a sign that people were not interested in sticking around for fight analysis or interviews.

Fight fans will not have to wait long to see more UFC action as the promotion returns in a big way with a major PPV event. UFC 212 takes place on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Three bouts will take place on UFC Fight Pass at 6:30 p.m. ET while four bouts will take place on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET. Six bouts will take place on PPV at 10 p.m. ET. A UFC Featherweight Championship unification bout between current two-time champion José Aldo and current interim champion Max Holloway will serve as the main event.
