A former NFL star with a checkered past attempting to make his name in MMA could do that in the UFC octagon this summer.

According to a report from MMA Fighting, controversial ex-Carolina Panther and Dallas Cowboy Greg Hardy will make his professional debut on June 12’s edition of Dana White’s “Tuesday Night Contender Series” event from Las Vegas, where he’s set to meet Brandon Sayles.

Since he was effectively blacklisted from the National Football League (NFL) following a series of concerning odd-the-field incidents (or maybe it was his precipitous drop-off in play from a Pro Bowl 2013 season), Hardy has reinvented himself as a fighter at Florida’s American Top Team (ATT) and has won all three of his amateur bouts by some form of knockout, all in under two minutes.

He’ll look to continue that rise against Sayles, who has won three straight bouts himself to sit at 5-1 in his fighting career.

Hardy has definitely used his athleticism and power to make a smooth transition to MMA thus far, but his sordid history including a vicious 2014 domestic violence arrest where he allegedly slammed an ex-girlfriend on a stack of assault rifles on his bed and a cocaine arrest the following year have followed him around outside of sports.

With domestic violence issues following the UFC around and shining a negative light on several fighters, it seems like a risk to take on such a polarizing figure, but they are apparently willing to forego the risk in order to get a possible star building.

Will it pay off for them?

Former NFL defensive end Greg Hardy continues to work towards his MMA career.

If you recall, Hardy was able to score his first victory as a cage fighter in early November and returned in December for his second first-round knockout in MMA competition. He has made great strides in MMA after making the decision to start training with American Top Team.

In his first two bouts, the opponents he has faced has yet to offer Hardy legitimate competition. By looking at the history books, his total fight time has been 2:08. Hardy has looked good inside the cage, but against overmatched fighters who were not prepared for his athleticism.

This leads us to LFA 33 in Dallas on Friday where he made his promotional debut by scoring a knock out over Ryan Chester in 14 seconds in a heavyweight preliminary bout.

The LFA has historically has sent numerous talents such as Cynthia Calvillo, Eryk Anders, Rashad Coulter and Dominick Reyes to the UFC.

The event, which aired on AXS-TV, was headlined by a pair of unbeaten welterweights as Kyle Stewart faces Jaleel Willis. Courtesy of Sean Grabin, here are the quick results from the event:

Greg Hardy defeated Ryan Chester by first-round knockout in just 14 seconds at LFA 33 on Friday night in a heavyweight MMA bout at The Bomb Factory in Dallas.

Hardy improved to 3-0 as an amateur fighter with the victory, while Chester fell to 3-2.

Eli Jordan of 1310 The Ticket tweeted a photo of Hardy’s winning punch:

Pat Doney of NBC Dallas-Fort Worth tweeted a video of Hardy’s entrance prior to the bout:

According to Mark Francescutti of the Dallas Morning News, Hardy fought Chester for free.

The one-time Pro Bowler made millions during a six-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys that spanned from 2010 through 2015.

He spent his first five campaigns with Carolina before the team released him.

The former Ole Miss standout was found guilty of communicating threats to and assaulting his former girlfriend, Nicole Holder, in 2014.

Upon his appeal, however, the charges were dismissed after Holder told prosecutors she did not want to testify in a second trial before she vanished, and the charges were later expunged from Hardy’s record.

Hardy registered 35 combined tackles, 6.0 sacks and one interception during his one season with the Cowboys in 2015, but no NFL team has signed him since then.

In 75 career NFL games, Hardy racked up 40.0 sacks.

Hardy, now 29 years old, signed with the Richmond Roughriders of the American Arena League in January, and he told TMZ Sports that he intended to play football and continue MMA.

By virtue of Friday’s victory over Chester, Hardy may be moving closer to a professional MMA career should he decide to pursue it.
