The mixed martial arts (MMA) world is still reacting to the news that Georges St-Pierre has retired from the sport.

Perhaps two of the best match-ups St-Pierre missed out on were against Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren. Woodley currently reigns as the 170-pound champion of the UFC. As for Askren, he has long been recognized as one of the sport’s most dominant welterweights. He’ll make his UFC debut at this weekend’s (Sat. March 2, 2019) UFC 235 in Las Vegas.

Woodley, Askren’s longtime friend and training partner, will be defending his title on the same card against Kamaru Usman. Both fighters spoke up during a media luncheon to promote this weekend’s pay-per-view (PPV). During the event, both reacted to “GSP’s” retirement.

Woodley admitted that he would’ve liked to fight St-Pierre for his own legacy, but St-Pierre’s is already established and doesn’t require him to test himself against the current welterweight king (via MMA Junkie):

“I think Georges has done what he needed to do in the sport,” Woodley said. “He didn’t have to prove it. Of course, I want him to fight me. But that’s for me. That’s for my legacy. He didn’t need to fight Tyron Woodley.”

As for Askren, he thinks St-Pierre left the door open for a possible return if the right opportunity ever presented itself:

“I don’t feel like he set a hard line in the sand,” Askren said. “I felt like he set the door open if something interests him in the future.”

Of course, the right fight could also lure St-Pierre back out of retirement. Right now, that looks like it would only be his oft-discussed superfight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. He isn’t getting that for now, but you can never say never in the UFC.

Indeed, his trainer Firas Zahabi acknowledged that could be the case in a recent interview as well. So while “GSP” is gone for now, Askren and others know it may not be for good.

Georges St-Pierre has officially declared his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA) – again.

But his longtime coach Firas Zahabi believes there’s still a window of opportunity for a return. Speaking on “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show,” Zahabi said he believes an “incredible opportunity” might be enough to lure the Canadian legend out of retirement (via Chamatkar Sandhu):

“He retired on Thursday and Friday morning he was there for practice. … I believe there’s a fire in Georges. I believe that one day there will be an incredible opportunity for a fight and he might come back.”

“GSP” was attempting to land a super fight with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, when the promotion opted not to go that route, “Rush” decided it was time to hang up his gloves. He walks away with a record of 26-2. St-Pierre is recognized as one of the best, if not the best, welterweight champions of all time.

He is also one of few fighters to have ever won two titles in different weight classes. In his last outing, St-Pierre defeated Michael Bisping to win the UFC middleweight title. After being unable to chase the third, we may have seen the last of the 37-year-old inside the cage.

Earlier today (Thurs. February 21, 2019) former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre announced his retirement.

During his press conference, however, “Rush” wouldn’t completely shut the door on a potential UFC return at some point down the line (via MMA Mania):

“I don’t know where I will be, mentally, the state of mind, in my life, in a few months,” St-Pierre said.

“I don’t know. For me, it’s retirement now. I don’t want those other guys to call me out, because I’m out. If something happens and Dana calls me back with something interesting, we’ll see. Like a movie scenario, ‘Oh! He’s coming back!’ We’ll see, but right now I’m not thinking about it.”

St-Pierre decided to hang up his gloves for good after being unable to land a super fight with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. At this point in his fighting career, the Canadian mega-star was looking for high-profile fights. After he wasn’t able to get the one he wanted, he decided it was time to walk away for good.

“Rush” has solidified himself as one of the sport’s best of all time. He holds a record of 26-2 and ends his career on a 13-fight win streak. If St-Pierre were to ever come out of what is now his second retirement, it would certainly have to be for a huge fight.
