Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu standout, Gunar Nelson continues to notch submission victories during his storied Octagon tenure, tonight wrapping up a late opening round armbar win over Bryan Barberena on the main card of UFC 286.
Nelson, who entered tonight’s matchup with Barberena off the back of an impressive unanimous decision victory over Takashi Sato in his Octagon comeback back in March of last year at The O2 Arena to boot.
Landing his second consecutive victory tonight in his main card matchup with Barberena, Nelson managed to assume half guard in the final minute and a half of the first frame. Eventually stepping over, Gunnar Nelson, a staple of Straight Blast Gym under the guidance of John Kavanagh, landed a late armbar triumph — forcing a tap from Barberena with just less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening round.

A welterweight clash between Daniel Rodriguez and Gunnar Nelson appears set for UFC 286 in London
Gunnar Nelson has become a staple of UFC London cards as of late. The Icelandic submission specialist competed on UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Aspinall and UFC on ESPN+ 5: Till vs. Masvidal, picking up a win over Takeshi Sato and dropping a split decision loss to Leon Edwards respectively.
Daniel Rodriguez has made a name for himself with a fan-friendly style, and a consistently active fight schedule. ‘D-Rod’ signed for the UFC in 2020, and has already competed 9 times, amassing a record of 7-2 inside the promotion.
The news of this fight was shared by Rodriguez on an Instagram story, where he stated the following:
“Bout agreement signed. March 18 vs. Gunnar Nelson. UFC London.”
Daniel Rodriguez vs. Gunnar Nelson will be added to the growing London card that Dana White previously claimed would be the ‘most bad a**’ card the UK had ever seen. However, whilst there are some fun fights on the card, there aren’t any ‘superstar’ matchups just yet.
Right now, the highest profile bout on UFC 286 is the middleweight clash between former title challenger Marvin Vettori and surging contender Roman Dolidze. An entertaining featherweight scrap between two brits also features, as Lerone Murphy takes on Nathaniel Wood.
Former Cage Warriors champions Jai Herbert and Jake Hadley look set to compete in front of their home crowds, taking on ?udovít Klein and Malcolm Gordon respectively. Joanne Wood is back, facing off against Luana Carolina, whilst a top 15 women’s bantamweight bout between Casey O’Neil and Jennifer Maia also features.

UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson finally has a new opponent for the upcoming UFC London card on March 19. News of the booking was first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. Takashi Sato will fill in for the injured Claudio Silva on 11 days’ notice against Nelson. Sato hasn’t fought in the Octagon since his submission loss to Miguel Baeza in November 2020.
Nelson has also spent a considerable amount of time away from MMA competition. He’s slated to make his first walk to the Octagon since his loss to former title challenger Gilbert Burns in September 2019. He’s lost back-to-back fights to Burns and Leon Edwards.
Nelson’s last win came against Alex Oliveira at UFC 231, submitting Oliveira in the second round. He’s also picked up wins over Albert Tumenov and Alan Jouban over his recent stretch of fights.
Nelson will get a tough assignment against the short-notice replacement Sato. While Sato has lost two of his last three UFC fights, he’s an accomplished striker and could give Nelson plenty of headaches on the feet.
Nelson is mostly known for his grappling, as he’s demonstrated in past wins over Omari Akhmedov and DaMarques Johnson. Sato has earned gruesome knockouts over the likes of Jason Witt and Ben Saunders in the UFC.

Gunnar Nelson is back.
Nelson, who has not fought since September of 2019, is set to return at UFC London on March 19 against Cláudio Silva. The news was first reported by MMA journalist Alfredo Zullino. Several outlets have since confirmed the news. The main event of the UFC London card at the 02 Arena sees Tom Aspinall take on Alexander Volkov.
Gunnar Nelson (17-5-1) last fought at UFC Copenhagen in 2019 where he suffered a decision loss to Gilbert Burns. It was his second loss in a row after dropping a split decision to Leon Edwards at UFC London in Mach of 2019. The Icelandic fighter just recently signed a new multi-fight deal with the promotion and hinted at a fight being announced soon.
Nelson has been in the UFC since 2012 and is 8-5 inside the Octagon. He holds notable wins over Alex Oliveira, Zak Cummings, Omari Akhmedov, and Alan Jouban among others. He has headlined a UFC event as well but lost by first-round KO to Santiago Ponzinibbio.
Cláudio Silva (14-3) is also riding a two-fight losing streak as he is coming off a loss to Court McGee by decision in May of 2021. His other loss came at the hands of James Krause in October of 2020.
Prior to the setbacks, Silva was on a 14-fight winning streak and was 5-0 in the UFC, including wins over Leon Edwards, Nordine Taleb, and Danny Roberts among others.
With the addition of Nelson vs. Silva at UFC London, the card is as follows:
Alexander Volkov vs. Tom Aspinall
Arnold Allen vs. Dan Hooker
Gunnar Nelson vs. Cláudio Silva
Jake Hadley vs. Allan Nascimento
Luana Carolina vs. Molly McCann
Cody Durden vs. Muhammad Mokaev
Makwan Amirkhani vs. Mike Grundy
Jack Shore vs. Timur Valiev
Shamil Abdurakhimov vs. Sergei Pavlovich

Gunnar Nelson will be coming back soon.
Nelson, who last fought in September of 2019 where he lost to Gilbert Burns, has not been heard from for over two years. There has been little talk of his next fight, but the Icelandic fighter announced on social media he has inked a new multi-fight deal with the UFC. He also teased a fight announcement.
“New multi-fight contract signed with the @ufc. Hopefully a fight announcement coming soon,” Nelson wrote on social media.
Before the loss to decision loss to Burns at UFC Copenhagen, he suffered a split decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC London in March of 2019. Before the back-to-back setbacks, he picked up a submission win over Alex Oliveira in a violent fight at UFC 231.
Nelson has been in the UFC since 2012 and is 8-5 inside the Octagon, including headlining a card against Santiago Ponzinibbio, where he was knocked out in the first round. He does hold notable wins over Alan Jouban, Zak Cummings, Omari Akhmedov, and Albert Tumenov.
Part of the reason why Nelson has not fought is due to injuries and back in December, he opened up about it to MMAFighting’s MMA Hour.
“It takes a long time, and it can be so crippling,” Nelson said of the back-to-back rib injuries that have now kept him out of the cage for over two years. “They’re just terrible. It was at the top here, so the top ribs, so it affects the shoulder, it affects the breathing, it affects everything.”
At this time, it’s uncertain the 33-year-old when he will fight again and who it will be against. However, the UFC London card serves as a likely date for Nelson to make his return back in Europe.
Who would you like to see Gunnar Nelson fight in his return?
John Kavanagh, the coach of Gunnar Nelson suggests that Khamzat Chimaev should fight his pupil at the UFC London card. Kavanagh noted that it would be a short flight for both of the fighters as well. With how good Chimaev has looked in his short time with the UFC, it may be a short fight […]
John Kavanagh, the coach of Gunnar Nelson suggests that Khamzat Chimaev should fight his pupil at the UFC London card.
Kavanagh noted that it would be a short flight for both of the fighters as well. With how good Chimaev has looked in his short time with the UFC, it may be a short fight as well. Chimaev tends to finish all of his opponents in just a few minutes and in some cases, shorter than that. Kavanagh took to Twitter to possibly sell the fight to both fighters.
“its been very interesting watching the rise of the uber talented and charismatic @KChimaev . @ufc is coming to London in March. as a fan i’d love to see him fight @GunniNelson . short flight to london for both of them….what you guys think? @seanshelby @HalliNelson”
John Kavanagh’s matchup between Nelson and Chimaev may be a tough sell
Nelson is a very talented fighter, but hasn’t fought in over two years. That’s what makes this a tough sell for Chimaev, who has decimated his opposition and recently mauled a top 15 contender in the welterweight division. Throwing Nelson to ‘The Wolf’ for his first fight back seems unfair to him as well. Chimaev is not only one of the most popular fighters in the UFC, but he is also one of the scariest in the entire promotion.
Khamzat Chimaev has his sights on a top five contender and the name that keeps popping up is Gilbert Burns. Burns would be a big step up in Chimaev’s career and would be a true test of his abilities. Burns fought for the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman back in Feb. of this year. If Chimaev is able to capture a win against Burns, that could put him up next for a title shot after Leon Edwards.
Do you think a match between Khamzat Chimaev and Gunnar Nelson makes sense?
