UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier Explains What Makes a Truly 'Great Championship Reign' Today

Lengthy UFC title reigns seem to be a thing of the past.

It doesn’t feel like it was that long ago that we all sat in front of our TVs on Saturday nights and marveled at the dominance of UFC champions like Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, and Demetrious Johnson, all of whom carried their respective titles for a combined 6,663 days.

UFC

Other fighters such as Jose Aldo and Jon Jones have had undeniably impressive title runs with ‘Junior’ defending the featherweight title seven times and ‘Bones’ notching 11 total defenses across two different reigns as the UFC light heavyweight champion.

UFC

With championship reigns seemingly getting shorter and shorter, Cormier believes that could offer an explanation as to why the UFC is sorely lacking star power these days. ‘DC’ also offered his take on how many defenses a fighter needs in this day in age before reaching that coveted Hall of Fame status.

“I think the reason we don’t have that star, is it’s hard to be a long-reigning champion,” Cormier said on a recent episode of Good Guy/Bad Guy with Chael Sonnen. “That’s the problem. The game has gotten so hard now, that Anderson [Silva] had what, 11 title defenses? Jon Jones had 13? Who is doing that anymore? We talked bout Sean O’Malley as if he had a great title reign, but he defended the belt one time. Imagine if he did it seven times…

“A long title reign is very difficult. It’s what’s needed to become a real draw. You cannot just be a flash-in-the-pan champion. Unfortunately, [Israel Adesanya] was a draw because he held that belt for a long time, but since he lost the belt, the number isn’t as great…the reigns aren’t as long [now]. I was talking to some of the guys on the weigh-in show… what would you consider a great championship reign today? For me right now, I think defending that belt three times. Winning the title, defending it three times, I think it gets you in the Hall of Fame because it’s so hard to hold on to the belt today” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Valentina Shevchenko, Kamaru Usman, and Amanda Nunes have the most dominant UFC title reigns in recent years

Nowadays, a reign like the ones that Silva, GSP, and ‘Mighty Mouse’ had just don’t seem to exist. The closest we’ve gotten to it thus far has been Valentina Shevchenko who defended the women’s flyweight title seven times before surrendering the belt to Alexa Grasso in March 2023.

Since then, ‘Bullet’ has regained the title and will look to resume her dominance over the division in 2025.

UFC

The next closest thing to her impressive run was Kamaru Usman’s successful defense of the welterweight title five times in less than two years, though four of those five fights came against Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal.

Israel Adesanya and Amanda Nunes also defended their middleweight and bantamweight titles five times apiece.

‘The Last Stylebender’ ultimately surrendered his belt to Alex Pereira in late 2022 before taking it back five months later while Nunes opted to lay down her gold and retire last year following a dominant performance against Irene Aldana at UFC 289.

Tony Ferguson boasted as future UFC Hall of Fame inductee: ‘We got to get him in on the merit of that winning streak’

Tony Ferguson backed to receive UFC Hall of Fame induction on the merit of that winning streak

Former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has been backed as a future inductee into the UFC’s Hall of Fame by current play-by-play lead, Jon Anik, who points to the Oxnard veteran’s once record-setting 12-fight winning streak as meriting him an induction into the ‘Fighter Wing’.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion and victor of The Ultimate Fighter during his UFC tenure, slumped to his record-setting seventh consecutive loss at UFC 296 back in December – following a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Paddy Pimblett.

Joining former two-weight champion, B.J. Penn in the midst of the longest consecutive losing run in the UFC with his seventh straight loss last month, Ferguson once held a record-setting run of 12 consecutive victories – including an interim title fight victory, as part of a stunning run between 2013 until 2019.

And despite his losing run, in which Ferguson has been urged by the likes of UFC CEO, Dana White, as well as Hall of Fame inductee, color-commentator, Daniel Cormier to call time on his fighting career, the Oxnard veteran insists he has no plans to hang up his gloves from combat sports.

Tony Ferguson backed to land UFC Hall of Fame induction

Going to bat for former interim titleholder, Ferguson, play-by-play lead, Anik claims he would like to see the former land in the ‘FIghter Wing’ of the promotion’s Hall of Fame when it’s all said and done – based on his 12-fight winning spree.

“I will fight like hell for Tony Ferguson to get in [to the UFC Hall of Fame],” Jon Anik told MMA Junkie Radio. “I think sometimes the interim champions can become interesting cases. But maybe I won’t have to fight for Tony. But if there needs to be a fight for Tony Ferguson to get into the UFC Hall of Fame as a modern-era fighter on the merits of his individual accomplishments and not a singular fight like he has against Lando Vannata or Edson Barzboa, we’ve got to get Ferguson in on the merits of that 12-fight lightweight winning streak.”

Would you back Tony Ferguson to make an entry to the UFC’s Hall of Fame?

Aljamain Sterling receives Hall of Fame induction ahead of Octagon return at UFC 292

Aljamain Sterling

Reigning UFC bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling has received his first Hall of Fame induction ahead of a highly anticipated return to the Octagon later this year.

‘Funk Master’ is slated for his second-straight main event slot on August 19th as he is set to square off with No. 2 ranked contender Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 in Boston. It will be a relatively short turnaround for Sterling after his third successful title defense against former champ-champ Henry Cejudo at UFC 288 in May.

This weekend, Cage Fury Fighting Championship announced that Aljamain Sterling would be inducted into the promotion’s Hall of Fame, an honor the ‘Funk Master’ was truly grateful for.

“Thank you guys for inducting me into the [Cage Fury FC] Hall of Fame!” Sterling tweeted. “You guys gave me a great opportunity to develop my skills against some of the toughest competitors in the Northeast regional circuit. 5 fights, 4 finishes, 3 title defences, [phone] to the UFC!”

Aljamain Sterling Continues to Dominate Despite Fan Backlash

Aljamain Sterling competed under the CFFC banner between 2011 and 2013 before getting called up by Uncle Dana. During his run, Sterling went 5-0 with four finishes. He captured the promotion’s bantamweight championship with a unanimous decision win over Sean Santella and went on to defend the title three times before exiting the promotion.

Despite being on a nine-fight win streak with three successful title defenses under the UFC banner, Aljamain Sterling has failed to connect with fans. Funk Master’ has regularly been the subject of harassment on social media, largely stemming from his controversial disqualification win over Petr Yan to capture the bantamweight title in 2021. Since then, Sterling has earned decision wins over former champions Yan, T.J. Dillashaw, and Henry Cejudo. Even with his impressive resume, fans are often dismissive of his accomplishments.

Aljamain Sterling will attempt to flip the script this August when he meets veritable fan favorite Sean O’Malley in a massive bantamweight main event clash.

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Jens Pulver shared his emotional reaction to the news of his induction into the promotion’s Hall of Fame this year – as he live streamed his reaction to last night’s UFC 284 event in Perth, Australia.

Pulver, a former undisputed lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, boasts a 29-17-1 professional record, having hung up his gloves from active competition back in 2013.

Jens Pulver became the inaugural UFC lightweight champion back in 2001

A coach on The Ultimate Fighter 5 against former two-weight champion, B.J. Penn – Jens Pulver became the inaugural UFC lightweight champion back in 2001, defeating Caol Uno in a unanimous decision victory, before defending successfully against Dennis Hallman, and the aforenoted, Penn – before departing the organization and vacating his lightweight crown amid a contract dispute.

Long called to receive an induction into the promotion’s Hall of Fame, during last night’s broadcast of UFC 284 from the RAC Arena, Pulver was officially announced as the latest induction into the promotion’s Hall of Fame.

Sharing his reaction to the action throughout the night, Jens Pulver broke down with emotion upon learning of his induction, with fans heralding the veteran Washington native.

Competing under the banners of the likes of Pride FC, WEC, and ONE Championship, Pulver became the first lightweight in Octagon history to headliner a promotional event, as well as becoming the first lightweight champion to ever defend a championship with his successful victory over Hallman.

Last night’s UFC 284 event saw a main card finish for featherweight force, Yair Rodríguez, who subsequently struck interim division gold courtesy of an impressive second round triangle submission win over Josh Emmett.

In the night’s headliner, fellow featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanvoski pushed lightweight kingpin, Islam Makahchev the five round distance and to his absolute limit to boot – eventually suffering a close, debated unanimous decision defeat to the Russian (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).

Do you realize what this means?  Randy Couture uses emoticons.

It’s been anticipated and speculated upon for some time, but it looks like "The Natural" has officially called it a career via Twitter.  He actually seems kinda surprised that we expected him to fight again.

If he doesn’t get tempted to try it again maybe just one more time, Couture will ride off into the sunset with a 19-10 record and a Hall of Fame legacy.  He will presumably continue running gyms, training fighters, and making movies  "when something interesting comes up".  (Ed. note:  He’s come a long way since "Fighter #8".)

Years from now, you will probably slap a kid who says "Who is Randy Couture?" in a snotty tone you won’t care for, which will of course make Thanksgiving 2031 awkward for everyone involved, especially when your daughter shows up, drunk, and with that loser again.  She could clearly do better, but at that point she’s only keeping him around to annoy you, and predictably, it works.  I tell you, those kids in the future, they won’t have any respect.

Feel free to share your warmest memories of Captain America in the comments, or, if you’re really brave, you can venture over to the forums
