Oscar award-winning actress, Halle Berry has revealed she endured an entire weight-cut to prepare for her recently released, directorial debut film feature, ‘Bruised’ — in which she directs and plays the role of professional mixed martial artist, Jackie Justice.

‘Bruised’, which was released on streaming platform, Netflix worldwide this month tells the tale of professional mixed martial arts fighter, Justice, played by Berry, as she looks to make her impact on the sport as well as reconnect with her son. And also features a performance from current UFC flyweight champion, the dominant, Valentina Shevchenko, who plays the role of Lucia ‘Lady Killer’ Chavez in the feature.

Halle Berry carries out actual weight-cut to prepare for MMA fighter role in ‘Bruised’

Detailing how she prepared for the role as Justice in her directorial debut, Berry revealed to ESPN MMA reporter, Marc Raimondi that she had actually endured a weight cut to prepare for the film.

.@halleberry (Halle Berry) says she did an actual weight cut for the Bruised movie — and got a ringing endorsment from no-nonsense Keith Peterson himself,” Raimondi tweeted.

It was hard for me ’cause I had never done that before but that was a big part of me playing this character,” Halle Berry revealed. “I wanted to experience every aspect of being a fighter that I absolutely could. I wanted to understand what it felt like and being the director of the story, I felt like I needed to understand it. So, the weight cut for me was probably a little more real for me than Valentina [Shevchenko]. I was preparing like a month and a half before just to get to a good fight weight. I was building muscle and trying to lose weight at the same time so that I could really physically look like a real opponent to her.

Berry then revealed that she had received some notable praise from longtime, experienced referee, Keith Peterson for her performance in the shooting of her fight with Shevchenko.

I remember the day, we were actually doing the fight and we had Keith Peterson, a real UFC referee, and I remember the day he came to me,” Halle Berry said. “We had performed one of our sequences and he said, ‘My God, I thought for a minute I was watching a real Valentina [Shevchenko] fight.’ That’s when I knew that, oh my God, all of this training and weight-cutting and all of this muscle building, everything was all worth it.” (Transcribed by Middleeasy)

The feature film was also originally slated to feature one-time UFC bantamweight championship challenger and now Bellator MMA featherweight contender, Cat Zingano alongside Shevchenko.

However, Zingano claimed that Berry had reached out to her in August of this year offering her a role in the film, which she accepted. Zingano then claimed she was offered a fight by the UFC which was slated to occur in October, but alleges that Berry advised her to reject the fight due to insurance reasons, and alleges that her refusal of the fight resulted in her release from the promotion. As a result, Zingano alleged that Berry subsequently informed her that she could no longer feature in the film as only active UFC fighters could feature. The Bellator featherweight has filed a lawsuit against Halle Berry seeking damages on promissory estoppel claims.

Halle Berry pulled out all stops for her fictional fight with UFC flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko in her movie Bruised.

Berry made her directorial debut with her passion project entitled Bruised, which was released on Netflix earlier this month. It has received the promotional machine of the UFC due to the story revolving around an MMA fighter seeking redemption as well as the fact that it featured the likes of Shevchenko.

As it turns out, Berry took her role in this movie ultra seriously, as she explained in an interview with MMAFighting. Here, she explained that, in order to properly get into the mindset of a fighter and experience, she went through an actual weight cut ahead of filming her fight scenes with the UFC champion.

“That was a really big part of me playing this character. I wanted to experience every aspect of being a fighter, that I absolutely could. I wanted to understand what it felt like, and being the director of the story, I felt like I needed to understand it. So the weight cut for me, was probably a little bit more real than for Valentina. I was preparing like a month and a half before, just to get to a good fight weight.” Berry said.

As it turns out, the amount of effort that she put into this fight actually earned Halle Berry some props from the one and only Keith Peterson. The no-nonsense, veteran MMA referee apparently praised her performance, saying that he felt like he was refereeing a real fight.

“I was building muscle, and trying to lose weight at the same time, so that I could really physically look like a real opponent for her. I remember the day we were actually doing the fight, and we had Keith Peterson, a real UFC referee, and I remember the day he came to me, and we performed one of our sequences, and Keith said ‘My god, I thought for a minute, I was watching a real Valentina fight. That’s when I knew that, oh my god, all of this training, and weight cutting, muscle building, it was all worth it,” Berry said.

Regardless of how you feel about the film itself, there is no denying that Halle Berry put her heart and soul into it. The effort of going through any sort of weight cut is impressive dedication, to say the least.

Valentina Shevchenko is the UFC flyweight champion and is currently undefeated at flyweight with an MMA record of 22-3.

Shevchenko avenged her first loss against Liz Carmouche, her only other two losses are against the UFC bantamweight/featherweight champion and pound for pound great Amanda Nunes.

The 125lb queen has branched out into Hollywood by being recruited into the movie industry with her role in the upcoming movie, Bruised.

Berry recently revealed that ‘Bullet’ broke two of her ribs while filming the movie.

Shevchenko was initially against hitting the Oscar-winning actress for real but was persuaded to do so with disastrous consequences.

“Her main idea for the fight scenes, it has to be real,” Schevchenko told MMA Fighting. “It has to be a real fight. As real as possible. Sometimes she was in the training, she was like ‘Valentina, you have to hit me harder’ and I’m like ‘Halle, I’m not sure’ and she said ‘you have to hit me, I have to feel that.’ I was like OK, I’ll do my best.”

Valentina Shevchenko Delayed A Fight To Film Bruised

Shevchenko revealed that the opportunity to star in a movie along Berry was too big to pass up and as a result, she asked to delay one of her UFC fights for the first time in her career.

“Who would say no if Halle Berry is calling you? It’s not a question!” Shevchenko said. “At that moment, we were in Australia. We were in Australia and it was our travel that we do all the time and I got the offer to have my fight, to fight for the title in Australia and it was the only one time I said give me a little bit more time.

“Because I knew it’s kind of like it will be in the same time when I have to prepare for the movie and I will have to prepare for the fight. It was the only time when I asked the UFC to have a different date for me.”

Shevchenko plays the Invicta FC champion in the film and acts as a final antagonist for Halle Berry’s character.

Halle Berry & Cat Zingano

In light of Cat Zingano’s lawsuit against Halle Berry, Berry’s lawyers maintain that “Alpha” was released by the UFC due to her lackluster fighting record and not his client.

Bellator MMA fighter Cat Zingano sued Halle Berry, Bruised Film Productions LLC, Thunder Road Film Productions Inc. and Romulus Entertainment LLC on Aug. 16 in Los Angeles Superior Court. According to Zingano, she missed out on a crucial UFC fight when Berry insisted that she keep a clear schedule to star in the MMA-based film “Bruised.”

In the suit, Zingano alleges that she turned down a UFC fight a week after Berry asked her to keep open availability. The UFC released Zingano in 2019. In the same month of being released, the lawsuit states Berry allegedly retracted her offer with Zingano after saying that only UFC fighters could take part in the film.

In recent court filings on Tuesday, Halle Berry’s legal representation revealed documents that suggest Zingano was released by the UFC in 2019 after losing four of her last five bouts. Additionally, the documents also allege that Zingano made the decision to appear in the film without knowing what role she would play or how much she would be compensated.

With the impending global release of Halle Berry’s film “Bruised,” the Hollywood actress’ lawyer believes Zingano is more or less looking for a cash grab.

“Although these events took place two years ago, Zingano filed this suit recently to cash in on the film’s Netflix release on Nov. 24 …,” Berry’s legal team states in their court papers.

Berry’s lawyers also added that Zingano’s lawsuit improperly seeks punitive damages. According to the attorneys’ court papers, the suit against Berry does not allege what damages actually occurred.
