Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks and former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard met for extremely high stakes in the co-main event of this evening’s (Feb. 19, 2017) UFC Fight Night 105 from the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The two fighters had lost a combined five straight contests, with Hendricks having dropped three straight to Stephen Thompson, Kelvin Gastelum, and Neil Magny while Lombard had been finished by Dan Henderson and Magny in fights he was clearly winning in the early moments.

Both needed a win to secure their UFC contracts, and for “Bigg Rigg,” it was the latest fight he said he would retire after if he lost, but his first at middleweight after a long and sordid history of missing the welterweight limit.

Round One:

Lombard started the fight off circling Hendricks, with both fighters cautious to engage. “Bigg Rigg” got the action moving with a low kick, and followed with a knee in the clinch. Lombard stung a counter and appeared to be stalking for a huge shot, landing a grazing power left.

Hendricks was lighter on the feet, but Lombard caught one of his low kicks to throw some big punches leading to a brief clinch. Lombard ate a low kick to clinch again, and Hendricks scored another knee. The former welterweight boss missed badly on a takedown and the fighters traded shots in the center of the octagon. Lombard then dropped him off another low kick, but “Bigg Rigg” quickly rose up.

A clinch saw the action to slow down, and the referee gave Lombard a warning to keep his fingers out of the fence. A quick flurry of punches came from both before the first round came to a close.

Round Two:

The second round began with Hendricks getting tagged with a counter as he rushed in close. He landed a slapping low kick but Lombard was there to score a combo. Hendricks countered with one of his own before a clinch lead to Lombard kneeing Hendricks below the belt not once but twice, prompting the referee to step in and give “Bigg Rigg” a five-minute break.

On the restart, Lombard wobbled Hendricks with a right hand and followed up with another. Hooks landed, but Hendricks threw back a few shots. Hendricks scored a knee up the middle and some punches, and again Lombard looked to clinch. Lombard landed a hard left over the top, and they traded shots in the pocket. “Lightning” was appearing to tire as he absorbed a knee and clinched again, leading to another warning to Lombard for grabbing the fence.

Hendricks landed a knee and a right hand after the fight started again, whiffing on a huge left before landing a final knee to close a better round for the former welterweight champ.

Round Three:

The last round began with Lombard stalking Hendricks to land a huge right and a low kick. Hendricks was active but throwing just out of reach, and both men missed on big looping shots simultaneously. Lombard scored with a punch and a body kick, and Hendricks lead with another big knee. A left followed from the more mobile Hendricks, who threw yet another knee only to get hit with an uppercut.

Lombard snapped a jab and Hendricks an overhand over the strike, landing a left hand and low kick right after. Lombard threw a right hook and missed a takedown attempt off of a knee, and Hendricks began landed combos and strong shots. But a jumping knee lead to a sweep takedown from Lombard, from which Hendricks got back up rapidly. Lombard stalked Hendricks lazily along the cage wall, landing body kicks and an overhand, but Hendricks fired back a low kick. The fight ended with Lombard chasing “Bigg Rigg” to throw a shot.

Official Result: Johny Hendricks def. Hector Lombard by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Hector Lombard on Cutting Down to Welterweight: ‘It Was a Big Mistake’

The UFC returns to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a decent offering on Fox Sports 1 this Sunday.

In the main event, rising talent Derrick Lewis draws Travis Browne in a fight with some real implications for the stagnant heavyweight division. If he wins, Lewis will get a matchup with one of the division’s elite. Browne is on the tail end of a bad two-fight losing streak and desperately needs a win to stay relevant.

That theme of desperation carries through into the co-main event. Former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks moves up to 185 pounds for the first time and tries to snap a three-fight skid against former Bellator champion Hector Lombard, who has lost two consecutive fights inside the distance. The winner will gain a new lease on life, while the loser could well find himself out of the UFC.

The rest of the card features fun matchups and prospects worth watching. Canada’s Elias Theodorou takes on Cezar Ferreira in a meeting of The Ultimate Fighter winners with real implications in the wide-open middleweight division.

On the preliminary card, the welterweight scrap between Santiago Ponzinibbio and Nordine Taleb should be a barn burner, as should the opening matchup featuring Jack Marshman and Thiago Santos. Keep an eye on debuting Canadian fighters Gavin Tucker and Aiemann Zahabi, both of whom are legitimate talents.

Let’s take a look at each matchup.

Johny Hendricks Has Excuse For Constantly Missing Weight

Johny Hendricks knows why he has struggled to make weight as of late.

The former UFC welterweight champ has been on a three-fight losing skid since his 2015 fight with Matt Brown. In two of those losses he failed to meet the 171-pound limit, also having a scheduled fight with Tyron Woodley scrapped from UFC 192 after ‘Bigg Rig’ was hospitalized due to complications from attempting the cut.

Now after being defeated by Neil Magny at UFC 207 via unanimous decision this past December, Hendricks has made the decision to try his hand at 185 pounds when he takes on Hector Lombard at UFC Halifax this weekend (Sat. February 19, 2017). The former 170-pound champ recently joined the UFC Unfiltered podcast (quotes via MMA Mania) with Matt Sera and Jim Norton and took a look back on his recent troubles, pointing to the unpopular IV ban by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as a key reason for his weight issues:

“Making 170 isn’t fun, it was never fun,” said Hendricks. “It took a toll on me mentally and physically to where I wasn’t enjoying this, fighting wasn’t fun. But I knew I needed to do that, but, there is a part of me that knew I had to go to 185 once the IV ban came in.”

At the moment Hendricks is 12 pounds away from making the middleweight limit and is enjoying eating whatever he wants along with great training sessions:

“I’m 12 (pounds) over right now. I’m eating, drinking whatever I want and enjoying life again. I am also enjoying training. I’m training twice a day,” he said. “In the past, there were times where I had to pick and choose which workouts you had to go hard at because you wouldn’t be able to do that for the second one. Especially when you’re cutting weight.”

Hendricks will make his middleweight debut against Hector Lombard, who is currently on a two-fight losing streak since making his Octagon return following a suspension. The Cuban’s most recent bout saw him suffer a hellacious second round knockout to Dan Henderson in his own debut at 185 pounds.

‘Bigg Rig’ noted that he originally thought his bout with Lombard would take place at welterweight, but was pleasantly surprised when he realized Lombard had already moved up and the fight would be at 185:

“He used to be a welterweight, so I though I had to fight him there. He moved up. And with me wanting to move up, too, it came to light perfectly for me and what I want to do. like I said, I do believe I have the power to be at ’85.”

If Hendricks is unable to snap his current losing spell it will mark his fourth straight loss. Do you think he could be facing retirement or being cut if he loses once again?

Johny Hendricks Once Again Promises To Retire With A Loss

After he missed weight before his last two fights at welterweight, former UFC champion Johny Hendricks has been forced to make the jump up to 185 pounds.

‘Bigg Rigg’ will make his middleweight debut against 38-year-old Cuban veteran Hector Lombard at February 19’s UFC Fight Night 105 from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Following three straight losses, Hendricks recently joined Submission Radio (quotes via MMA Mania) to discuss his upcoming bout with Lombard, vowing to walk away from the sport once and for all if he racks up a fourth consecutive UFC loss:

“Yes, I said if I lost I would (retire). But again, what I’m saying is, if I go out there and get beat up like I did the last two fights, you know, where I still can’t compete with those guys – which I clearly showed I can’t. Now I’ll be better, I think at 185. But like I said, if I go out there and I can’t compete, well I guess I can’t make 170, right? And I’m not going to try to ever again. It’s just too hard on my body. And if I fight good at 185, well then I’m gonna stay there.

“But if I don’t do good, then guess what, it’s time. I had my fun, I had my time. It’s not worth going out there and training for 12 weeks and then being done, or going out there and just losing. And that’s really what it’s about. And here’s one thing that really leads me to believe that that fight was mine – did you hear the boos after that? The whole crowd thought I won that fight. So I don’t want to leave whenever the fans think I’ve won. And that’s really where my head’s at, is that hey, they believe I won that fight, so I’m gonna do one more.”

Hendricks hasn’t won a fight since a unanimous decision win over Matt Brown, who has seen a sharp drop-off in performance himself, at UFC 185 in early 2015.

Since then the former welterweight champion has suffered three back-to-back losses to Stephen Thompson, Kelvin Gastelum, and Neil Magny. With ‘Bigg Rigg’ now apparently putting his career on the line against Lombard, it makes their clash inside the Octagon all the more interesting.

So Hendricks has once again vowed to retire if he loses his next fight – something MMA fans probably wouldn’t argue with if he does. Will UFC Fight Night 105 mark the end of “Bigg Rigg?”

Hendricks vs. Lombard Targeted For UFC Halifax

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31JEFfgB7j8

It looks like former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks isn’t done with the UFC just yet. Despite claiming he would retire if defeated by Neil Magny at UFC 207 (which is exactly what happened, but Hendricks backtracked on the claim prior to the fight), Hendricks has been linked to a bout with former Bellator middleweight champ Hector Lombard. According to a report by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, the fight is being targeted for the struggling UFC Halifax card on February 19. Previously, a heavyweight tilt between Junior Dos Santos and Stefan Struve was slated as the main event. Struve, however, pulled out earlier this month due to injury, and a replacement has not been found.

Per Helwani, UFC officials have yet to decide if Hendricks vs. Lombard will serve as the new main event, but it’s likely that Dos Santos is off the card. Nearly every other marquee heavyweight in the promotion is currently booked, injured, or suspended.

Lombard (34–6–1 (2) enters the fight on a two-fight losing skid, dropping losses to Magny and Dan Henderson, who finished him with a vicious head kick and elbow sequence at UFC 199. Hendricks (17–6), meanwhile, has lost two straight to Magny and Kelvin Gastelum, and missed weight on both occasions.

The fight is reportedly set for 185lbs, and would mark Hendricks’ debut as a middleweight, as well as Lombard’s return to the division.
