Germaine de Randamie believes Herb Dean’s stoppage in her fight with Aspen Ladd was perfectly warranted.

De Randamie defeated Ladd via knockout (see video) in their UFC Sacramento headliner last week. It wasn’t without controversy, though, as many felt it was an early stoppage. “GDR” landed a flush punch that dropped Ladd early on and before she was able to land follow-up strikes, Dean stepped in and ended the fight.

Reliving the fight, the former featherweight champion described what was a perfect punch that led to the finish:

“I stepped a little bit towards the outside on her right side so I could slip her punch and that meant that my hand would land flush on the chin,” de Randamie told MMA Fighting’s Eurobash podcast. “In dreams and in practice you visualize this. When you visualize your fight, you visualize throwing that hand.

It’s barely ever this perfect when it lands. It landed and I was like, ‘She’s down!’ If you look back at it I hesitated for a minute and then I realized that I better jump on it.”

Ladd was clearly dazed and trying to recover, even though she felt the fight could have gone on. But de Randamie questioned why there was any need to take additional damage, especially when mixed martial artists already take so much head damage during training.

With that in mind, she believes Dean did a good job:

“In my personal opinion, it was a good stoppage,” she explained. “I saw that Herb was watching her, I saw her react a little bit slow to the punch. I believed I was going to finish the fight there and then. So, like I said, there’s no need to take more damage.”

A week on since the fight, do you agree with the stoppage?

Longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) referee Herb Dean came under fire last month for his stoppage of Ben Askren vs. Robbie Lawler at UFC 235.

After initially acknowledging that the fight was prematurely stopped, Dean is now defending his decision to stop the action. Speaking on “The Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show” recently, Dean explained why he made the decision to stop the fight (via Bloody Elbow):

“When I see some chokes, a rear-naked choke, especially with the guy on the back face up, I take a sigh of relief,” Dean said. “My job just got so much easier. It’s not like he’s gonna go out and in a second, take some extreme amount of damage.

“He may go out, I’ll have a second to make sure – not even a second – a half a breath, to make sure he’s OK. And then let it go out and he’s not gonna take any other damage. A bulldog choke – anytime you have a choke where there’s pressure on the neck and to see the spine backwards like that, that’s a rough situation for me.”

Precarious Position

Dean continued that he couldn’t know for sure that a fighter was holding their own neck up. In that case, he believes he should do what he did, and that’s stop the fight.

“So I see someone go limp, and I know that on top of it, they’re no longer putting tension on their neck, and their neck is just being bent, I can’t see that I should do something different than that. With that same situation with the arm going limp with that type of a choke on someone, I would think the arm should be doing something else. At this time, I don’t think that I should do something different.”

Lawler looked like he was going to run away with a quick first-round knockout win. However, Askren was able to regain his composure and get a dominant position on the ground. After he locked in the bulldog choke, Dean called the fight off.

However, once the fight was over, Lawler shot up to his feet and began to protest the finish. Everyone watching thought Lawler had gone unconscious due to his arm going limp. Yet that didn’t turn out to be the case.

A rematch was discussed, namely by Dana White. Ultimately, the UFC decided to grant Askren his wish to fight Jorge Masvidal instead.

Former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren made his highly-anticipated UFC debut last night (Sat. March 2, 2019).

He stepped into the cage against former 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler. “Funky” took a tremendous amount of damage early on, and it looked like it was going to be a short night at the office. However, after surviving the initial onslaught and getting the fight to the ground – where he thrives – Askren sunk in a bulldog choke.

It looked like, initially, Lawler was out cold. Referee Herb Dean stepped in and waved the action off. However, as soon as the choke was released it could be seen that Lawler was just fine, and “Ruthless” began protesting the stoppage. An all-around dissapointing way to end one of the most highly-anticipated debuts in UFC history.

Check out how the mixed martial arts (MMA) community reacted to the incident below:
