Video: ‘Arena Combat 1? Highlight Reel Proves That 2-on-2 Obstacle Course Fighting Is Taking America by Storm

Just like American Ninja Warrior is the latest evolution of jogging, so is Arena Combat the latest evolution of fighting. Formerly the Russian enterprise known as Hip Show, the 2-on-2 obstacle-course fight league made its U.S. debut last Saturday in Bristol, Virginia. As you can see in the above highlight reel, a good time was had by all.

Check out the press release below for more information on what exactly is happening here, and stay tuned for news of Arena Combat’s impending TV deal and upcoming events.

ARENA COMBAT FASCINATES VIRGINIA CROWD WITH IT’S UNITED STATES DEBUT; CURRENTLY IN TALKS WITH NETWORKS FOR AIRING OF ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS

Miami, Florida, August 15th, 2014 – Forty fighters entered THE ARENA, and 20 emerged victorious. Saturday, August 9th, ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS, the first American ARENA COMBAT event was held in Bristol, VA. The sport was introduced to a rowdy studio audience in the Bearcat Den gym, and the crowd was captured from the opening fight to the main event.

Amenities exclusive to ARENA COMBAT bouts such as the padded obstacles, team based maneuvers, and the 2-on-1 Sudden Death round were on display from the beginning of the night. Undefeated bantamweight “JABBAWOCKEE” JOSH SMITH propelled himself off of “The Table” obstacle with a flying kick and dove off of an obstacle into a takedown; one of two teams of brothers, TEAM LUDUS, used group tactics throughout en route to a victory; and fans were in awe of the 60 second 2-on-1 round, cheering a number of sole survivors to a 1-on-1 final round.

“The fighters bought into this concept whole-heartedly, and gave 200% in each and every fight,” beamed Arena Combat President CYRUS FEES. “Not enough can be said about these incredible athletes, and it is an amazing way to start our American product!”

The showcase fights were the “international showdowns” between the United States and Russia. Teams of American fighters including a pair of gym teammates, a team of brothers, and two light heavyweights that had never met, trained, or worked together. The wild spectators in Bristol, VA were on the edge of their seats, as the two nations went to war in THE ARENA.

All fights were shot for television with an expansive production team, audio system, and lighting rig. The high-definition footage has interest from many major networks, and an announcement will be made soon on the final landing spot for ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS.

Announcement of ARENA COMBAT 2 has not been released, but date and location will be released in the coming weeks. More highlight packages are expected in the next week, while broadcast agreements are pending.

“While we cannot announce a television deal at this moment, we can say that the interest is there, and the events of August 9th, 2014 have taken this company to a new level,” said Arena Combat CEO CASEY OXENDINE. “You can see a taste of it in this new highlight reel, but the full product will blow you away. Arena Combat is here, and the only direction is up!”

Watch This ‘Black Fedor’ Daniel Cormier Highlight Video and Get Excited

(We would have also accepted “Bro Cop.”)

With Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier now booked as the UFC 178 main event, one question remains: Are you ready to come to daddy? (If that quote isn’t on the official poster, it’ll be a missed opportunity, marketing-wise.)

We just saw this highlight reel from the very talented video-maker Muzone, and we felt obligated to share it. By the way, Jones has opened as a modest -170 betting favorite against Cormier, who’s currently at +145. Where’s your money going?

Highlight Reel of the Day: The Top 10 Submissions in UFC History [VIDEO]

(Props: BeautyofMMA. Check it out before the UFC inevitably shuts down their YouTube channel.)

Any top 10 ranking of anything in MMA is bound to be frustratingly subjective. And so it goes with Beauty of MMA‘s well-edited (but sort of oddly-curated) video list of the Top 10 submissions in UFC history.

For me, Anderson Silva’s triangle choke of Chael Sonnen, Frank Mir’s kneebar of Brock Lesnar, Jon Jones’s guillotine choke of Lyoto Machida, Mir’s bone-snapping armbar of Tim Sylvia, and BJ Penn’s gory rear-naked-choke of Joe Stevenson would all be first-ballot selections. They’re all missing here…and yet Dustin Hazelett earns two spots on this countdown. (Luckily, Frank Mir is given his due in the #1 spot. If you’re impatient, all ten fights are listed in the ‘About’ section of the video’s YouTube page.)

What I’m saying is, don’t look at this video list as a definitive take on UFC history — they’re just ten entertaining submissions that will help you pass the time at work on a dull Monday morning. After the jump: Beauty of MMA’s take on the UFC’s top 10 knockouts. At least Anderson is on this one…

Must See: The Best UFC Knockouts of 2012 [VIDEO]

(Props: TheBestMMAHouse. Take a look before this bad boy gets pulled.)

Why not blow the first 15 minutes of your workday watching dozens of the best UFC knockouts that last year had to offer? Obviously Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim gets a place of honor at the end of this highlight reel, but if I had to pick another favorite moment, it has to be the way that George Roop‘s mouthpiece explodes out of his face at the 12:01 mark, courtesy of a Cub Swanson right hand.

It’s also nice to revisit the pure frenzy of Anthony Pettis‘s finish of Joe Lauzon (6:30), Rich Franklin going all sack-of-potatoes against Cung Le (8:24), and that intense moment after Pat Barry gets pulled off of Christian Morecraft where it seems like ‘HD’ might just jump back on and keep pounding the poor bastard (10:56). For all of its disappointments, 2012 was a damn good year for dudes getting their lights turned out.
