Nzechukwu

Imo State-born striker, Kennedy ‘African Savage’ Nzechukwu was once more forced to rally from some early round adversity — and answered those questions once more in the form of a rallying third round knockout victory over Brazilian grappler, Danilo Marques in the featured prelim bout of UFC Vegas 30.

Now undefeated in his last three and improving to 9-1 as a professional, Nzechukwu gave up his back early in the first round against Marques, who climbed from a standing position and locked a body triangle at the fence, arguably taking the frame with a 10-8 margain.

In the second, Marques was once more able to utilise his grappling, but appeared to be fatiguing quite drastically. In the opening seconds of the third round, Marques was backed up to the Octagon fence himself as Nzechukwu began unloading with winging hooks and straights. As a sitting duck shelling up, Marques was left in no position to continue, with referee, Jason Herzog separating the two — handing Nzechukwu his second consecutive knockout win.

Below, catch the highlights from Nzechukwu’s rallying effort against Marques.

Avila

UFC bantamweight contender, Julia Avila scores her third Octagon victory via an emotional rear-naked choke triumph against Julija Storliarenko in a rescheduled bout on the preliminary portion of this evening’s UFC Vegas 30 card.

Matching with Lithuanian grappler, Stoliarenko in a rescheduled bout following the cancellation of their UFC Vegas 22 bout in March after the former collasped at the weigh-ins prior to fight night, Avila managed to bloody Stoliarenko early with what appears to have been a front kick which may have caused a broken nose.

Scrambling with Stoliarenko in the final minute of the third and final round, whom just so happens to have scored eight career wins by submission herself, Avila just her second career victory via submission — latching onto a taut rear-naked choke with just 40-seconds remaining in their 135lbs bout.

Jung

One-time UFC featherweight title challenger, Chan Sung Jung is back on the winner’s track for the first time since October — taking home a unanimous decision win over Dan Ige in the main event of UFC Vegas 29.

Some good work from Ige with his hands early, however, Jung manages to fall into a double leg takedown and land Ige on his back with just over two minutes remaining in the first frame. Good scramble from Ige sees him explode back to his feet. Ige winning those early striking exchanges with his angles and entries.

Some early power from Jung in the second results in a brief knockout for the Pohang native, however, Ige once again sets up those traps with his movement and footwork, as Jung looks to counter with precise power strikes. Clash of heads results in a laceration on the left eyelid of Jung, who takes that second round, 10-9.

Another round in the books for Jung who manages to take Ige down off a guillotine attempt, taking the Hawaiin’s back for the majority of the latter half of the round on route to another frame victory. 10-9 Jung.

Akin to the first, a very, very close fourth round with Ige taking the lion share of the striking exchanges on the feet, while Jung managed to force the Hawaii native to his back again before the final minute, maybe just stealing the frame.

Stealing the fifth round once again, Jung managed to take Ige’s back and control for the majority of the frame, despite some dicey scenarios earlier on the feet. Jung is back to the winner’s enclosure and back on the championship path.

Check out the highlights from Jung’s unanimous decision victory below.

Jandiroba

Former Invicta FC strawweight champion, the #13 ranked, Virna Jandiroba has lodged her fourth Octagon victory, taking home a second round doctor stoppage win over Kanako Murata — who suffered an apparent arm injury after an earlier armbar attempt from Jandiroba.

Utilising her distance management and striking early in the first round, Jandiroba eventually scrambled and after a failed triangle attempt from her back, managed to lock up a belly down armbar, causing the clear injury to Murata’s left arm. Clearly compromised between the opening buzzer of the second round all the way through to the final exchanges — which she could barely defend herself from.

Met by the doctor in the centre of the Octagon on route back to her corner, the Octagon-side physician attempted to check the mobility of Murata’s left arm, before informing referee, Chris Tognoni that the Matsuyama native could not continue.
