Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey suffered a harrowing knockout loss against Holly Holm at UFC 193, one that sent her in to a tailspin of depression and negative media for the months following. Having lived the life of the most dominant champion in the division’s history, overnight ‘Rowdy’ fell in to a pit of despair that she would not emerge from until last month. It’s important amidst all the criticism over Rousey’s attitude to remember she is human, just like the rest of us.

The persona we see in UFC promo cuts and media sessions is not necessarily an accurate depiction of the real Ronda Rousey, and I feel the circumstances surrounding UFC 193 go much deeper than it appears. The common MMA fan might tell you that she was simply a hype train that got derailed, beating ‘lesser’ competition in a division devoid of real talent. In reality, the women’s 135 pound division needs a boost, that’s true, but this isn’t a tool to take away a champ’s achievements. The loss to Holm leaves one clear message to consider; Ronda Rousey needs to change camps.

Here’s why:

Improvement, or the illusion of

Rousey came in to the UFC 193 main event intent on destroying Holly Holm in the stand up department, but for some reason was overlooking the former boxing great’s own striking skills. For a fighter like Rousey, only really focusing on boxing for three years, to take on a thorough bred pugilist like ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ head on like that, there’s really something wrong there. Completely abandoning the bread and butter grappling style that got her to the belt in the first place, Rousey was like a lamb to the slaughter, and it was certainly a rough night down under.

Her stand up was always going to look amateur against a great boxer and kickboxer like Holm, but it wasn’t just down to her opponents skill advantage. Everything about Rousey’s stand up was wrong, her footwork, lack of head movement, inability to cut angles or close off her opponent’s movement, her hand position, her range, her lack of head movement. In reality, she had absolutely zero fundamentals, not even the basics, to show Holly Holm that night in Melbourne, Australia. At some point, you have to look at who is training her to use these techniques, who is telling her that this is how you fight.

Which leads quite nicely to the next point.

For a while there it looked like Ronda Rousey might never be stopped, but things can change after you get kicked in the face…

Before UFC 193 there were very few people that believed Ronda Rousey would suffer the brutal defeat she eventually faced. Holly Holm was without doubt a huge underdog, going up against the most dominant reigning champion in women’s history. As it turned out, the history books and betting lines had little influence on the fight, evident when ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ planted a perfectly placed kick along the jaw line of ‘Rowdy.’

The fight was over, as was the storm of hype that surrounded Rousey, but it was replaced by a different kind of media attention. Social media exploded in a vicious backlash toward the UFC and Rousey, with memes and videos depicting the demise of the now former champion making the rounds still to this day. Rousey went in to hiding, then came back out and revealed she’d thought about suicide, leading to more criticism from the MMA community. Then she declined to discuss fighting in interviews, before being revealed as the next contender to the title. It just never stops.

With Miesha Tate snatching the belt from Holm at UFC 196, we now face a rock paper scissors scenario in the women’s bantamweight category. The belt could quite possibly be passed around from fight to fight now, but the bizarre recent statement from Rousey on when she got the news about the Tate vs. Holm result raises some interesting questions. What was she doing at the moment Tate took the belt from Holm? Watching wrestling. Is ‘Rowdy’ really motivated to fight?

With all the drama and havoc surrounding the UFC 196 main event between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, it’s easy to forget there’s a pivotal title fight going down in the co-main event. UFC women’s bantamweight queen Holly Holm will look to make the first defense of her title against Miesha Tate in the role of second fiddle for the event. ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ bashed the living daylights out of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 last November, marking her territory at the top of the division in doing so.

In Miesha Tate, Holm faces a gritty ex-title challenger who’s come on leaps and bounds in her last four fights, since losing to Rousey at UFC 168. ‘Cupcake’ has put together an impressive win streak including the scalps of Rin Nakai, Sara McMann, Liz Carmouche and Jessica Eye. Any doubts about Holm’s legitimacy or ‘Cupcake’s’ place in the division will surely be cleared up tonight. But that’s not all, the ex-boss of the bantamweight ladies Ronda Rousey could make an octagon entrance tonight.

After going in to hiding following her colossal loss to Holly Holm in Australia, Ronda Rousey re-emerged but in a very toned down version of her former brash self. It seems as though acting roles were what lay immediately ahead for ‘Rowdy,’ and she’s even been refusing to answer questions about fighting during interviews lately. Now the word is that Rousey will be appearing at UFC 196 to watch Holly Holm and Miesha Tate settle their beef, in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Bear in mind that the venue has 50 foot screens where they’ll be showing replays of Holm’s head kick KO against Rousey.

The news comes via Jim Edwards on Twitter:

Wow, as one of the pioneers of women’s MMA and a former UFC champion, it’s pretty crazy how Ronda Rousey snubbed this reporter from Australia…

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has experienced the harsh realities of being a fighter and celebrity over the past four months, and it all started in the lead up to UFC 193 last November. ‘Rowdy’ was being packaged as the most dominant athlete in the game, and the UFC was pushing to make her a household name. It all got a little too much for some sects of mixed martial arts fans, who were very vocal in their hopes for a Rousey loss at UFC 193.

Lose Rousey did, and in spectacular fashion, to Holly Holm. ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ snatched the title from Rousey, who was until that point the first and only women’s bantamweight champion, and in doing so opened the floodgates to months of drama. Fans across the world jeered and rejoiced in Rousey’s downfall, and she went in to hiding from the media. Resurfacing last month dueing a slot on Saturday Night Live, the singing and dancing Ronda Rousey was back, but not for long.

A dramatic interview on the talk show with Ellen revealed that Rousey had hit a deep depression following the loss to Holm. Even considering suicide at one point, it seemed the crushing knockout had impacted ‘Rowdy’ more than any of us had first realised. So is she past it? We might have been able to find out some more details, if the former Olympian Judoka was taking questions on fighting, which she is not. Check out this frustrated reporter from 7 News Perth in Australia being told by Rousey’s PR team that she’d walk out if asked about fighting:

So the woman that once declared herself the greatest fighter of all time, and said she could beat every women’s bantamweight with one hand is now shying from the limelight. Well, at least where talking about fighting is concerned.

Where’s this all leading? Personally, I doubt we’ll ever see Ronda Rousey fight again, not with how many movie roles are now coming out of the woodwork. Would that be a bad thing though? She’s used fighting to elevate her status, make some money, what more does the ex-champion need to prove?
