Ian Garry is no longer welcome at Team Renegade in Birmingham.

In October, the fast-rising Irish star revealed that he had been banished from the famed European gym at the request of reigning UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards, who is currently in camp for his highly anticipated title tilt with Colby Covington on December 16.

Garry, who returns that same night against Vicente Luque, was informed of his exile by Team Renegade coaches who reportedly placed the blame on the shoulders of Edwards.

“Leon and his head coach had an issue with me training on the mats and recently have asked me not to train there, because, ‘Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym,’ which I don’t fully understand, Garry claimed in an interview with The Independent “I get that we’re both in the top 10 and you might see me as a threat, but I’m not a threat to you right now; I’m not fighting for the title right now. His coach said the words: ‘Ian is a threat, I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities.”‘

Team Renegade Claims Leon Edwards Had Nothing to do with Ian Garry’s Removal

Team Renegade responded to Ian Garry’s statement, claiming that his lone-wolf style of training is not in line with the culture they are attempting to maintain within the gym walls and refuted any accusations that Leon Edwards was the peron behind Garry’s removal.

Sometimes the coaches allow fighters to come in from the outside, but this is very much a privilege and not the norm,” Team Renegade wrote in a statement to The Independent. “If the coaches feel it’s not adding to the team’s culture, a fighter is refused entrance. Ian Garry’s more nomadic approach to preparation has given him great results, but it’s not in line with what we are creating at Team Renegade. This has nothing to do with one specific fighter or a specific coach.”

Bursting into the welterweight top-ten with an impressive showing against Neil Magny in his last outing, Ian Garry could find himself standing across the Octagon from Leon Edwards sooner rather than later, assuming he can get past his next big challenge in Vicente Luque.

Emanating from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, UFC 296 will close out the promotion’s pay-per-view year with two massive world title fights and the return of British fan favorite Paddy Pimblett.

Reigning UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards won’t be training with Ian Garry anytime soon.

On December 16, Garry will return to the Octagon four months removed from his impressive unanimous decision victory over Neil Magny. With the win, ‘The Future’ finally broke into the welterweight division’s top ten and announced himself as a legitimate contender in the stacked 170-pound weight class.

Unfortunately, Ian Garry’s success has seemingly resulted in him being booted from his gym in Birmingham courtesy of the division’s top dog, Leon Edwards, who also trains at the facility.

“Leon Edwards, his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade,” Garry told The Independent. “Told me I’m not allowed to train there. I have to word this correctly because I don’t wanna be… The guys at Renegade… It was great energy. Tom and Ash were very welcoming, lovely, and nice to me. It was nothing to do with them.

“Leon and his head coach had an issue with me training on the mats and recently have asked me not to train there, because, ‘Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym,’ which I don’t fully understand.”

Ian Garry is not a threat to Leon Edwards… for now

Leon Edwards and Ian Garry are both scheduled to step inside the Octagon at UFC 296. Garry will attempt to continue his climb up the top-ten rankings when he meets division standout, Vicente Luque. As for Edwards, the undisputed welterweight champ will put his title on the line against perennial contender Colby Covington in the evening’s highly anticipated main event.

“I get that we’re both in the top 10 and you might see me as a threat, but I’m not a threat to you right now; I’m not fighting for the title right now,” Garry continued. “His coach said the words: ‘Ian is a threat, I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities.’ That makes me think someone is weak-minded and can’t have another contender training on the mat. That’s why gym conflict is annoying. For me, why not have that other elite guy on the mat? Why not train with him?”

Ian Garry is currently 13-0 in his mixed martial arts career with six of those victories coming under the UFC banner. He boasts a 50% finish rate inside the Octagon with knockouts against Rostem Akman, Song Kenan, and Daniel Rodriguez.

Whether or not you love his brash attitude and the ability to back it up, Ian Garry is a UFC superstar in the making, and ‘The Future’ has some big plans once he takes care of a little business with top-ten-ranked contender Vicente Luque.

After kickstarting his UFC career with an impressive six straight wins, including a decisive decision victory over Neil Magny in his last outing, ‘The Future’ plans on clawing his way up the stacked welterweight rankings. Appearing on the Anik & Florian podcast, Garry hopes to one day share the Octagon with perennial contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, but he isn’t stopping there, calling for potential showdowns with ex-titleholders Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman.

“Here’s the thing, anybody who’s ranked above me, anybody whose number when I finish that fight is ranked higher than me is an opponent and it just has to see,” Garry said. “Right, we sit there and we look at it. I’ve called ‘Wonderboy’ out, he said no to me multiple times. Is the UFC Dublin card gonna manifest? Can we put me and ‘Wonderboy’ on a main event in UFC Dublin in front of the Irish crowd and bring it back to Dublin, Ireland? Why not.

“If Colby goes out there and gets starched by Leon, who is he gonna fight next? Let me go in there and thump the mouth off him. You’ve got Usman who’s just come off of a loss against Khamzat, why not give me him? Go out there and it’s like alright, Khamzat couldn’t finish him, watch what I’ll do to him. Anybody that’s above me, they’re all opponents” (h/t MMA News).

Ian Garry looking to improve his ground game with one of the UFC’s greatest grapplers

Perhaps the Irishman is biting off a little more than he can chew, but 13 wins in a row certainly shows that Ian Garry is ready for the next level of competition. He’ll get exactly that at UFC 296 in December when he returns to take on Brazilian knockout artist Vicente Luque.

I’m going to spend a month with Demian Maia, improving my jiu-jitsu, working on fundamentals, and just fixing and growing and learning jiu-jitsu from arguably the best grappler that UFC has ever seen,” Garry revealed. “So, that’s what I’m going to do and then I’m going to go in there on December 16 and do whatever the f*ck I want to do when I’m in the fight because I can, that’s the truth.”

Ian Machado Garry vs. Vicente Luque added to UFC 296 card on December 16.

Despite both sharing the mats in South Florida at Kill Cliff FC, undefeated Dublin striker, Ian Machado Garry, and recent headliner, Vicente Luque are slated to fight each other at UFC 296 on December 16. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Machado Garry, who landed the number eleven rank in the official welterweight pile back in August at UFC 292, landing a hugely one-sided unanimous decision win over Neil Magny – turning in a heralded striking display against the division’s most winningest fighter.

As for Luque, the New Jersey-born Brazilian earned the number ten rank at 170lbs back in August to boot, landing a unanimous decision win over former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos – snapping a two-fight losing skid.

Ian Machado Garry draws recent big-winner, Vicente Luque at UFC 296

And as per UFC CEO, Dana White, Ian Machado Garry and Vicente Luque will now share the Octagon on December 16. at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, in a welterweight showdown.

In the midst of a six-fight winning run since landing in the Octagon, former Cage Warriors welterweight champion, Machado Garry turned in her third victory of the year with his judging shutout against Magny back in August.

Prior to that, Machado Garry rallied to stop Kenan Song with third round strikes, before turning in a highlight-reel high-kick and strikes TKO win over veteran kickboxing talent, Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night Charlotte back in May.

A perennial contender at the welterweight limit, Luque, who boasts a 22-9-1 professional record, largely is considered to pose the biggest threat to Machado Garry’s undefeated run to date – having racked up victories over the likes of Belal Muhammad, Niko Price, Jalin Turner, Bryan Barebrena, Mike Perry, Randy Brown, Michael Chiesa, and former undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley

Sean O'Malley unsure Ian Machado Garry UFC sure you can't beat Neil Magny by decision

Whilst incumbent bantamweight champion, Sean O’Malley believes undefeated welterweight contender, Ian Machado Garry can most definitely become a superstar whilst competing under the banner of the UFC – victories such as his decision win over the veteran, Neil Magny won’t go far in propelling him toward those heights.

O’Malley, who struck undisputed bantamweight gold last month in his first pay-per-view main event at UFC 292, dispatched defending champion and division great, Aljamain Sterling with a second round TKO – dropping the Uniondale early in the frame with a counter punch, before finishing with follow-up ground strikes.

On that same card, Portmarnock native, Machado Garry improved to 13-0 as a professional, with the former Cage Warriors titleholder wrapping up a shutout unanimous decision win over the above-mentioned most-winningest welterweight, Magny on the main card.

Sean O’Malley unsure if Ian Machado Garry can reach UFC stardom

However, despite his one-sided judging win, O’Malley – who himself is on the cusp of reaching Octagon stardom, warned Machado Garry that decision victories over contenders akin to Magny must come few and far between for him during his UFC tenure.

“Yeah, I think he (Ian Machado Garry) could [become a superstar], for sure,” Sean O’Malley told Peter Carroll during a recent appearance on The Craic. “Will he? We’ll see. I think the reason I’m in the spot I’m in, is because of my performances. You know, I have some f*cking sweet knockouts. So, I think to get to that certain level of a Conor (McGregor), you know, knocking out Jose (Aldo), knocking out Chad Mendes, knocking out Eddie Alvarez. You can’t go out there and beat Neil Magny in a decision and be a superstar.”

Himself eyeing a title rematch with Marlon Vera before the end of the year at UFC 296 in December, O’Malley has set sights on avenging his sole career knockout loss, dating back to a 2020 grudge match.

As for Machado Garry, welcoming a striking battle with former title challenger, Stephen Thompson before the end of the annum to boot, the Dubliner recently hit headlines after claiming he would walk into Miami and “slap the mouth” off of former interim champion, Colby Covington.

Do you agree with Sean O’Malley’s take on Ian Machado Garry?
