The seven undercard bouts are Igor Pokrajac vs. Krzystof Soszynski, Jared Hamman vs. Constantinos Philippou, Dennis Hallman vs. John Makdessi, Yves Jabouin vs. Walel Watson, Mark Bocek vs. Nik Lentz, Rich Attonito vs. Jake Hecht and John Cholish vs. Mitch Clarke.

The live blog is below.

Igor Pokrajac vs. Krzystof Soszynski

Round 1:

Jared Hamman vs. Constantinos Philippou

Round 1:

Dennis Hallman vs. John Makdessi

Round 1:

Yves Jabouin vs. Walel Watson

Round 1:

Mark Bocek vs. Nik Lentz

Round 1:

Rich Attonito vs. Jake Hecht

Round 1:

John Cholish vs. Mitch Clarke

Round 1: They exchange feints in the early seconds, then Cholish jumps into a short left hook from Clarke. Cholish seems to be looking for the takedown, but Clarke is fending him off well early on. Stiff jab from Cholish. Clarke jabs in from too far out and eats a counter right. Cholish manages a foot sweep, but Clarke is up in a hurry and looking for a suplex. Cholish defends and rolls, putting Clarke on his back and going to work from his guard. Cholish stands up out of the guard and thinks about attacking from there, but settles for letting Clarke up with less than two minutes left in the round. Clarke is the busier man on the feet, but he’s not landing much. He misses with two punches and Cholish stings him with a right. Clarke stuffs a Cholish takedown in the final ten seconds, but it’s still likely Cholish’s round. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cholish.

A potential misspelling nightmare bout has been booked by the UFC for December.

Krzysztof Soszynski will face off with Igor Pokrajac in a light heavyweight fight at UFC 140, which is expected to take place in Toronto on Dec. 10. The two fighters were originally paired up for a fight at UFC 131 in June, but an injury pushed Pokrajac off the card.

UFC 140 will be the promotion’s second trip to Toronto in 2011. The first visit, in April, took place at the Rogers Centre and set a North American record with more than 55,000 fans. This card, though, will take place at the Air Canada Centre with an expected main event between heavyweights Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Soszynski (26-11-1, 6-2 UFC) has won back-to-back decisions since suffering his first TKO in nearly three years with a loss to Stephan Bonnar in July 2010. In June, Soszynski beat Mike Massenzio, who had filled in for Pokrajac. And in that fight, Pokrajac had filled in for Anthony Perosh.

Soszynski, a Season 8 cast member of “The Ultimate Fighter,” has won three fight night bonus awards in his eight UFC fights, including consecutive Submission of the Night wins against Shane Primm and Brian Stann in his first two fights for the promotion.

Pokrajac (23-8, 2-3 UFC) is coming off a March win over Todd Brown at UFC on Versus 3. He has won two of three fights, including a submission over James Irvin last year. His one loss in that stretch was a unanimous decision setback against Bonnar at the TUF 12 Finale in December.

UFC 140 also is expected to feature a light heavyweight bout between Tito Ortiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, which was originally scheduled for this past March before Ortiz pulled out with an injury. Other fights on the card include Brian Ebersole vs. Rory MacDonald and Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung.

UFC 131 Injury Curse Continues; Pokrajac Latest to Withdraw

Igor Pokrajac James Irvin UFC photos Versus MMA
(Pokrajac chokes out James Irvin at UFC on Versus 2, but contracts the Sandman Curse in the process. Props: Francis Specker)

UFC 131 was never going to be remembered as the most stacked event of the year, but it did have a lot of crowd-pleasing names on it. Then, Brock Lesnar fell ill with a flare-up of diverticulitis, TUF 11 winner Court McGee tweaked his knee in training, and Mac Danzig’s chest injury snubbed out a compelling bang-up with Donald Cerrone. Throw in injury withdrawals from supporting players Anthony Perosh and Rani Yahya, and you’re left with a ghost-ship of a card that’s making Joe Silva work double-shifts.

Now, just days before the third UFC event in three weeks, the card continues to lose bodies. Due to an undisclosed injury*, Croatian light-heavyweight Igor Pokrajac has been forced to withdraw from his fight against Krzysztof Soszynski, and will be replaced on short notice by Mike Massenzio. (Pokrajac was already an injury replacement for Anthony Perosh, which means that this UFC 131 injury curse has affected K-Sos as much as anybody.)

Best known as a middleweight, Massenzio was released by the UFC last year following consecutive stoppage losses to CB Dollaway and Brian Stann. He last competed on April 29th, scoring a 2nd round TKO over Nate Kittredge at a Combat Zone MMA event in New Hampshire.

In related news, a training injury has forced welterweight contender Martin Kampmann out of his scheduled bout against John Howard at UFC on Versus 4 (June 26th, Pittsburgh). Replacing him will be TUF 7 vet Matt Brown, who was slated to face Rich Attonito on the same card; Daniel Roberts will now come in to face Attonito. It’s a do-or-die fight for Brown, who has lost his last three fights — all by second-round submission.

* It’s nice to see that Sherdog has become as lazy as CagePotato, referring to Soszynski as ‘K-Sos‘. Add it to the list of phrases that we’ve popularized and then run into the ground.

Mike Massenzio has agreed to step in on less than one week’s notice against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 131, officials announced late Monday night.

The opportunity presented itself for Massenzio, who was released from the organization in August after losing his second fight in a row, after Igor Pokrajac was withdrew from his fight against Soszynski due to an undisclosed injury.

This marks the third opponent Soszynski has been forced to prepare for, as he was originally scheduled to meet Anthony Perosh before an injury sidelined the Australian.

Massenzio, who usually fights at middleweight, has agreed to meet Soszynski at light heavyweight. The New Jersey-native is 1-0 since leaving the UFC.

Soszynski (25-11-1) is 2-2 in his last four fights.

UFC 131, headlined by Junior dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin, airs live on pay-per-view this Saturday night from Vancouver’s Rogers Arena.
