Martial Arts Fail of the Week: A Kung Fu Instructor With a Chuck Liddell-Level Beer Gut

Another weekend, another Martial Arts Fail of the Week.

Today we don’t have anything quite as scandalous as instructors telling you to shit yourself or claiming that defeating a wrestler is as easy as sidestepping a takedown.

Instead, we have an example of the kind of shoddy martial arts techniques being taught in dojos across the country. This is the kind of stuff Martial Arts Fail was originally started to expose: Techniques of dubious validity practiced on partners that are totally compliant. How is that kind of stuff supposed to teach a person how to fight and defend themselves?

So anyway, this week’s example is from a San Soo Kung Fu school. If you’re an MMA history buff, you’d recognize that name. UFC 2‘s Thaddeus Luster was a representative of the style (and he got dominated by a Sambo practitioner). This school in particular belongs to Bill Hulsey, the instructor in the video, who’s been running the school for 39 years.

To us, the video typifies martial arts. An old, deified “master” with a huge beer gut makes himself look like a Mortal Kombat character by beating up a compliant student.

The guy has tons more videos. Have a look at some of the highlights:

The guy has tons more videos. Pretty much all techniques involve slapping the enemy in the balls. Have a look at some of the highlights (and by the way, thanks to Ryan R. aka “SonOfSerbia” for tipping us about this guy):

Video: ‘Arena Combat 1? Highlight Reel Proves That 2-on-2 Obstacle Course Fighting Is Taking America by Storm

Just like American Ninja Warrior is the latest evolution of jogging, so is Arena Combat the latest evolution of fighting. Formerly the Russian enterprise known as Hip Show, the 2-on-2 obstacle-course fight league made its U.S. debut last Saturday in Bristol, Virginia. As you can see in the above highlight reel, a good time was had by all.

Check out the press release below for more information on what exactly is happening here, and stay tuned for news of Arena Combat’s impending TV deal and upcoming events.

ARENA COMBAT FASCINATES VIRGINIA CROWD WITH IT’S UNITED STATES DEBUT; CURRENTLY IN TALKS WITH NETWORKS FOR AIRING OF ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS

Miami, Florida, August 15th, 2014 – Forty fighters entered THE ARENA, and 20 emerged victorious. Saturday, August 9th, ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS, the first American ARENA COMBAT event was held in Bristol, VA. The sport was introduced to a rowdy studio audience in the Bearcat Den gym, and the crowd was captured from the opening fight to the main event.

Amenities exclusive to ARENA COMBAT bouts such as the padded obstacles, team based maneuvers, and the 2-on-1 Sudden Death round were on display from the beginning of the night. Undefeated bantamweight “JABBAWOCKEE” JOSH SMITH propelled himself off of “The Table” obstacle with a flying kick and dove off of an obstacle into a takedown; one of two teams of brothers, TEAM LUDUS, used group tactics throughout en route to a victory; and fans were in awe of the 60 second 2-on-1 round, cheering a number of sole survivors to a 1-on-1 final round.

“The fighters bought into this concept whole-heartedly, and gave 200% in each and every fight,” beamed Arena Combat President CYRUS FEES. “Not enough can be said about these incredible athletes, and it is an amazing way to start our American product!”

The showcase fights were the “international showdowns” between the United States and Russia. Teams of American fighters including a pair of gym teammates, a team of brothers, and two light heavyweights that had never met, trained, or worked together. The wild spectators in Bristol, VA were on the edge of their seats, as the two nations went to war in THE ARENA.

All fights were shot for television with an expansive production team, audio system, and lighting rig. The high-definition footage has interest from many major networks, and an announcement will be made soon on the final landing spot for ARENA COMBAT 1: SOUTHEAST TRIALS.

Announcement of ARENA COMBAT 2 has not been released, but date and location will be released in the coming weeks. More highlight packages are expected in the next week, while broadcast agreements are pending.

“While we cannot announce a television deal at this moment, we can say that the interest is there, and the events of August 9th, 2014 have taken this company to a new level,” said Arena Combat CEO CASEY OXENDINE. “You can see a taste of it in this new highlight reel, but the full product will blow you away. Arena Combat is here, and the only direction is up!”

One day after he was released from Bellator for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, porn star Christy Mack, notorious TUF alum War Machine (a.k.a Jon Koppenhaver) remains on the run from police with a $10,000 bounty on his head. Mack, however, has been hospitalized ever since.

After promising to make a statement this morning, Mack recently posted photos of her injuries and details of the assault via her Twitter. WARNING: They are absolutely horrific.

Good God. We always knew that War Machine was capable of some despicable things, but this is just abhorrent. Mack’s side of the story is somehow worse.

In case you’re finding that difficult to read, it says:

At about 2 a.m. Friday morning, Jon Koppenhaver arrived announced to my home in Las Vegas, NV. After he broke up with me in May, he moved out of my house and back to San Diego. When he arrived, he found myself and one other fully clothed and unarmed in the house. Without a single word spoken, he began beating my friend; once he was finished, he sent my friend away and turned his attention to me. He made me undress and shower in front of him then dragged me out and beat my face. I have no recollection of how many times i was hit. I just know the injuries that resulted from my beating. My injuries include 18 broken bones around my eyes, my nose is broken in 2 places. I am missing teeth and several more are broken. I am unable to chew, or see out of my left eye. My speech is slurred from my swelling and lack of teeth. I have a fractured rib and severely ruptured liver from a kick to my side. My leg is so badly injured, I have not been able to walk on my own. I also attained several lesions from a knife he got from my kitchen. He pushed the knife into me in some areas including my hand, ear and head. He also sawed much of my hair off with his dull knife.

After some time, the knife broke off of the handle and continued to threaten me with the blade. I believed I was going to die. He has beaten me many times before, but never this badly. He took my phone and cancelled all of my plans for the following week to make sure no one would worry about my whereabouts. He told me he was going to rape me, but was disappointed in himself when he couldn’t get hard. After another hit or two, he left me on the floor bleeding and shaking, holding my side from the pain of my rib. He left the room and went to the kitchen where I could hear him ruffling through my drawers. Assuming he was finding a sharper, more stable knife to end my life, I ran out the back door, shutting it behind me so the dogs did not run inside to tip him off. I hopped the fence to the gold course behind my house and ran into a neighboring house. naked and afraid he would catch me, I kept running through the neighborhood running through the doors. Finally, one answered and I was brought to the hospital and treated for my injuries.

I would like to thank everyone for their support through this rough time. I am healing fast and well, and I appreciate a lot of the prayers and visits I have received over the past few days. After many months of fear and pressure to keep this man happy, although I fear for my life, I feel that I can no longer put myself in this situation. The cheating by him nearly everyday, and almost weekly abuse, is now more than I can stand. There is a $10k reward for the capture of Jonathan Koppenhaver at this time. Please report any information to your local police.

Thank you.

Machine has of course since declared that he is “not a bad guy” on Twitter, all while refusing to turn himself in to police out of the fear that he won’t be given a fair shake. You know, kind of like how Josh Grispi is proclaiming that he didn’t assault his wife with a pitbull last week. While the latter is most likely headed for a lifetime behind bars, we can only hope that War Machine is found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the following days. It’d be better than he deserved, honestly.

And Now He’s Fired: Bellator Fires War Machine Over Domestic Abuse Allegations

(War Machine in 2007 / Photo via Getty)

Bellator has fired War Machine after a report from TMZ claimed he was involved in a domestic violence investigation.

TMZ’s report claimed the domestic dispute involved three people at War Machine’s Las Vegas home. Two people were reportedly injured so bad they had to go to the hospital. The report claimed one victim was War Machine’s “significant other.”

A tweet from Christy Mack, War Machine’s sort of girlfriend (the “it’s complicated” relationship status was made for them), seems to confirm the report:

A tweet from Christy Mack, War Machine’s sort of girlfriend (the “it’s complicated” relationship status was made for them), seems to confirm the report:

War Machine seemingly tweeted about the incident as well:

While nothing is official yet, a domestic violence incident seems pretty likely. We hate to say this was inevitable, it seemed inevitable given War Machine’s sordid history.

Fortunately, Bellator under Scott Coker threw the book at War Machine.

“We have a zero tolerance policy here at Bellator when it relates to any form of domestic violence,” Bellator president Scott Coker said in a press release sent to CagePotato. “And after learning of this latest incident involving Jon Koppenhaver, War Machine, Bellator is releasing him from his promotional contract with the organization.”

This is a far cry from Bjorn Rebney’s terrible “Human beings make mistakes and sometimes say stupid things” stance that saw War Machine get away with anything.

War Machine has been arrested before, so who knows if and how long he’ll be incarcerated this time. His last fight was a loss to Ron Keslar at Bellator 104. To be honest, Bellator is better off without him.

We’ll post more updates as we get them.

‘I Will Literally Kill You’: Jones vs. Cormier Feud Takes a Nasty Turn in This Unaired ‘SportsCenter’ Footage

On Monday, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier went on SportsCenter for a thought-provoking interview about the totally awesome! regrettable press-conference brawl that had gone down just hours beforehand. Though Cormier fired some heated barbs during the segment (“He’s a punk, he’s a liar, he’s a whole bunch of things he shouldn’t be proud about being”), Jones decided to do the interview as his Drowsy Autistic Guy character, which could still use some workshopping, honestly.

It turns out that the real heat came after the segment was officially over. In this incredibly uncomfortable footage (via MMAJunkie), Jones asks Cormier, “Hey pussy, are you still there?”, which leads Cormier to marvel at how fake Jones is, and how he can turn into a completely different person when the cameras are off. Then it gets really good:

Cormier: You are the fucking scum of the earth, you are a terrible human being, but you can sure turn it on, huh?

Jones: Thank you.

Cormier: Gaahh, fuck. I wish they would let me next door so I can spit in your fucking face.

Jones: [long pause] You know I would absolutely kill you if you ever did something like that, right?

Cormier: You could never kill me.

Jones: Oh, I bet you I could.

Cormier: Then you should try, Jon. You really should try, Jon.

Jones: I will literally kill you if you spit in my face.

Cormier: Yeah, let’s try that, Jon.

Jones: Lit-terally kill you.

Cormier: Let’s try that, Jon.

Jones:  I’m not saying I would fight you. I said I would kill you if you do some silly shit like that.

Cormier: So Jon, do you think I’m just going to sit there and let you kill me, Jon? I mean really.

At that point, a producer comes by to break up the fun, and the question remains unanswered. Anyway, we’d like to thank Jon and Daniel once again for giving us such a great storyline this week. Also, this screencap:
