Conor McGregor completely changed the UFC by making money fights seem more important than legitimate title fights.

Back in December of 2015 McGregor captured his first UFC title by downing Jose Aldo in the first round of their meeting. McGregor would never defend that title, however, instead moving up to welterweight for back-to-back fights with Nate Diaz. After the conclusion of his two fights outside of featherweight, McGregor decided to move up to 155 pounds (while retaining the featherweight belt) and challenge for the lightweight title, which he won from Eddie Alvarez via second round knockout in the main event of UFC 205 this past November.

The Irishman then took some time off from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition to embark on a career in the boxing world, taking on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition bout this past August. McGregor lost the fight via 10th round TKO.

Now that the circus act between McGregor and Mayweather has come to a close, it’s likely that the 155-pound champ will return to the Octagon for his next combat sports outing. Current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, a former opponent of McGregor, recently joined The MMA Hour to share his thoughts on the Irishman’s actions as of late.

“Blessed” sounded off on McGregor being nothing more than an ‘exhibition fighter’ and claimed he should continue the trend by calling out the likes of CM Punk (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“It is what it is. He says our fight between me and him is there, but it’s low on the totem pole,” Holloway said. “Then he is over here talking about fighting Paulie in MMA. It’s like, the guy should call out C.M. Punk, at least CM Punk got some time in UFC. I don’t know, it makes no sense to me. This guy is over here fighting exhibition matches. If that’s what you want to do, and he don’t want to be about that champ life, so be it.”

Dana White Reveals WWE Won’t Let Brock Lesnar Do Another Crossover Fight

Don’t expect Brock Lesnar to be returning to the Octagon anytime soon – not while he’s under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) that is.

Lesnar’s last Octagon appearance came last year at UFC 200 when “The Beast” took on Mark Hunt in the co-main event of the card. Lesnar would wind up winning the fight via unanimous decision, however, it was later discovered he failed a United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) drug test as performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) were found in his system.

This reflected poorly on the WWE’s drug testing policy when it was all said and done, most likely explaining why the company won’t allow Lesnar to do another crossover fight in the UFC while under contract with them. UFC President Dana White recently joined the Dan LeBatard Show to discuss the possibility of Lesnar fighting in the UFC again, and revealed the former NCAA Division I heavyweight champ is under contract with WWE through next August (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“Lesnar was still under contract with WWE until next August,” White said. “Who knows what would have happened. I don’t count my chickens anymore, I’ll tell you that.”

“They didn’t want to do that again,” White said “You saw what happened last time he was under contract and it doesn’t look good for anybody.”

Stephen Thompson Wants Interim Title Fight With Former UFC Champion

Fight fans, Stephen Thompson, is making headlines these days, and it’s because he is extremely focused on who he may fight after his next fight. Fight fans, Stephen Thompson, is making headlines these days, and it’s because he is extremely focused on who he may fight after his next fight. Keep in mind that it’s one thing for a fighter to have their call-out planned for after their next win but it puts things on a completely different level when the fighter tells everyone about it ahead of time. But hey, we are in a different era in MMA (mixed-martial-arts), so why not.

The top welterweight contender is doing this. Despite the fact that he has a big fight set against Jorge Masvidal on the PPV portion of UFC 217 and the notion that it will likely leave the winner in grasp of a shot at the welterweight title, Thomson knows what he wants.

Thompson has fought current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley twice, but has yet to beat the champion. Thompson would likely need pretty special circumstances to warrant a third shot at the UFC gold.

It was recently announced that Woodley would be going on hiatus to recover from a nagging shoulder injury.

With all of that being said, Thomson took the time to go on Submission Radio and during the interview, he stated that he is looking for an interim title fight with former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

“I haven’t really talked to anybody about that with the UFC,” Thompson said, when asked about a potential third title shot with a win over Masvidal (transcript courtesy of Bloody Elbow). “The only thing that I know is that I’m facing off against Jorge Masvidal. But, what I believe I have to do come November 4th is – to be able to stay for that title contention, to be able to fight for the title – is put on a good show and put out a good W, an exciting W come November 4th against Jorge Masvidal.

“We’ve been kind of going back and forth with me and Robbie Lawler. I was ranked number one, then he’s number one, then we’re both number one. So hopefully a good win over this… You know, I understand Tyron is out for a little while, so hopefully, we’ll be able to fight against Robbie Lawler, maybe for an interim welterweight title against him for that belt. There’s also word RDA will want him to fight for the title too, so I really don’t know. I gotta go out there and face Jorge first and see what happens there before I can think about really what’s going on next. But it is in the back of mind.”

“Well, I don’t want to put anything out there,” Thompson responded, to questions about holes in Masvidal’s striking game. “He’s probably got guys listening to this podcast (laughs) and stuff. But, he’s a great Muay Thai stylist and his clinch work is one of the best. I mean, he’s one of the guys that goes out there and he just brings it, man. And he defeats a lot of these guys because he’s a very tough opponent and he just outworks them. You know, his cardio, he’s got cardio for days. He’s been a 155’er, so he’s not really big at 170, but he’s got cardio for days and breaks a lot of these guys because of that.”

UFC 217 is set to take place on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden. Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre for the UFC middleweight title is expected to serve as the main event. Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw for the UFC bantamweight title is expected to serve as the co-main event.

The main card will air on pay-per-view while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

“His clinch work is one of the top in the welterweight division, probably in the UFC, and I haven’t seen anybody better in his clinch than Anderson Silva, who’s known for that. So, he’s got great knees and great elbows. And I think he’s gonna press forward like he normally does and try to get me into that clinch, maybe take me down here and there, because usually, everybody tries to do that against me. But, he’s very well-rounded, so I gotta be on point every step of the way when I step out there against him November 4th. And I’ve been working religiously on my wrestling and my Jiu Jitsu just in case the fight goes there. I’m ready for wherever it goes.”

“A lot of fight fans are more excited about our fight than anything else, so we both have responsibility to go out there and really put on a show. And unlike Tyron, this guy comes forward. He comes to fight, and it’s got fireworks written all over it.”

“You’re gonna see more of Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson than you saw in my last two fights against Tyron. I love it when guys come forward, which is something you didn’t see during the Tyron Woodley fight. But that’s just the way Masvidal is. He comes walking forward, he’s not afraid to press the action, which enables me to use my arsenal a little bit better, to use my kicks, to use my angles. So yeah, man, you’re gonna see a more exciting fight from me November 4th.”

Mark Hunt Destroys Dana White For UFC Fight Night 121 Removal

Heavyweight fan favorite Mark Hunt’s ongoing war with the UFC just got taken to a new level.

“The Super Samoan” was set to fight Marcin Tybura in the main event of November 18’s UFC Fight Night 121 from Sydney Australia, but was removed from the card by the promotion today due to supposed “medical concerns” and replaced by former champ Fabricio Werdum, who will make a quick turnaround to fight Tybura after fighting at last weekend’s UFC 216.

Hunt wasn’t buying it, however, as he posted on Instagram that although the ‘medical reasons’ were him admitted he had began slurring his words in a recent interview, he was actually removed from the main event fight due to his ongoing lawsuit against the UFC, Dana White, and Brock Lesnar for Lesnar’s failed USADA drug tests in conjunction with his smothering win over Hunt at July 2016’s UFC 200:

“I’m disappointed that I have been withdrawn from the fight, I have passed all medicals 2 days ago. And spent 100,000 on camp. The truth is the legal case I have filed has caused me to be withdrawn. The interview has been taken out of context and want to reassure all my fans, I slur my words only when I have a drink I’m fit and healthy, and would have understood if the UFC requested a medical to ensure my safety, however this is total bullshit fuck you Dana, you’ve always hated me you dog”

Hunt has been at extreme odds with the UFC ever since the loss to Lesnar, whom he claims was given special treatment and unfairly allowed to fight in the Octagon after receiving a waiver to avoid the usual six-month USADA testing return in order to compete in the UFC.

Prior to the bout, Hunt had said he knew Lesnar would come into the fight ‘juiced to the gills,’ but then reacted rather surprised when it was found that he actually was to the point of suing him and his employer.

A veteran knockout artist, Hunt is one of the more higher-paid heavyweights in the UFC, perhaps a deserved position after his consistently exciting and heavy-hitting bouts. Despite that, he’s been a longtime critic of the UFC’s business and an advocate for increased fighter pay.

Did the UFC do ‘The Super Samoan’ wrong here, or are they truly looking out for his health?

The UFC has officially announced that veteran Mark Hunt has been pulled from his scheduled UFC Fight Night 121 main event bout against Marcin Tybura. The promotion cited concerns over Hunt’s health as the reasoning for pulling him from the event.

In a piece Hunt recently wrote for Playersvoice.com.au, he revealed that he has had trouble sleeping as well as trouble speaking as of late. Due to these statements, the UFC will not allow him to compete on Nov. 18, 2017 in Australia:

“Following a recent first-person article published by UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt, UFC has taken the precautionary steps of removing Hunt from a previously announced bout in Sydney, Australia,” a statement first issued to News.com.au read. “The health-related statements made by Hunt in the article represent the first time UFC was made aware of these claims. Athlete health and safety is of the utmost importance to the organization and it would never knowingly schedule an athlete complaining of health issues for a fight. The organization will require that Hunt undergo further testing and evaluations prior to competing in any future UFC bout.”

Not only was Hunt pulled from the fight, but he was also replaced by former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum, who will now headline the event opposite Tybura. Werdum just competed this past weekend (Oct. 7, 2017), submitting late replacement opponent Walt Harris at UFC 216 in Las Vegas in just 65 seconds.

What do you make of the UFC’s decision?
