Undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev has once more called to be placed atop the UFC”s official men’s pound-for-pound rankings following his February victory and title defense, questioning how heavyweight kingpin can sit at the top of the pile.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 284 back in February in Perth, Australia – landing his first successful defense of the 155lbs championship with a close, competitive unanimous decision win over featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski.

Winning vacant lightweight spoils back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE in the main event of UFC 280, Makhackala native, Makhachev submitted former undisputed champion, Charles Oliveira with a second round arm-triangle submission win.

Billed as a bout to determine the outright pound-for-pound kingpin under the promotion’s banner, Islam Makhachev failed to actually take the top-spot in the pile, despite his judging victory over Volkanovski in enemy territory.

Islam Makhachev voices displeasure with UFC pound-for-pound rankings

Taking issue with the above-mentioned former light heavyweight champion, Jones’ inclusion on the list and seat at the top table, Makhachev described the scenario as “bullsh*t”.

“This is bullsh*t, brother,” Islam Makhachev told Daniel Cormier during an episode of Check In. “How [is] Jon Jones can be number one? He beat some guy [Ciryl Gane] who is not champion, this guy don’t have [a] belt. And they [the UFC] put him number one pound-for-pound [fighter], This is bullsh*t. It doesn’t matter how he beat him.”

Yet to be booked to make his Octagon return, Makhachev revealed recently how the UFC have informed him following his victory over Volkanovski, that he should take some time away from the Octagon, with reports suggesting the American Kickboxing Academy mainstay is primed to headline UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Makhachev scoffed at the idea of an immediate rematch with former champion, Oliveira overnight – following the Brazilian’s stunning first round ground strikes TKO win against Beneil Dariush at UFC 289.

Co-headlining UFC 289 in Vancouver, Canada tonight, Oliveira, the current #1 ranked lightweight contender, and former undisputed champion, rebounded to the winner’s enclosure in highlight-reel fashion.

Adding Kings MMA staple, Dariush to his incredible winning résumé, Charles Oliveira managed to stop the former with a slew of opening round ground strikes in an electric opening round back-and-forth.

And calling his shot for a title rematch with Russian grappling sensation, Makhachev later this year at UFC 294 in October, Oliveira, who suffered a defeat to the former last year – was reminded of that result, in fact.

“Congrats Charles (Oliveira),” Islam Makhachev tweeted. “But still there’s levels in this game (sunglasses emoji).”

Headlining UFC 280 against American Kickboxing Academy staple, Makhachev in October of last year, Oliveira suffered a second round arm-triangle submission loss to the former in the pair’s vacant title fight.

Yet to be booked for his expected Octagon return in October following a prior successful title defense against featherweight kingpin, Alexander Volkanovski in February, Makhachev has been tipped to return at UFC 294.

And while remaining non-committal on a title rematch with Makhachev should Oliveira win at UFC 289, the Sao Paulo finishing phenom certainly left promotional president, Dana White with a lot to stew in following his stunning stoppage of Dariush in ‘The Great White North.

UFC president, Dana White has failed to shed light on the future of current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev – claiming he is unsure if the victor of this weekend’s UFC 289 fight between Charles Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush will earn a shot at gold.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, managed to land his first successful defense of the title at UFC 284 back in February in Perth, Australia – defeating his featherweight champion counterpart in a close unanimous decision triumph.

Winning vacant lightweight spoils last October, Islam Makhachev snapped the division-best 12-fight winning run of the above-mentioned former titleholder, Oliveira in Abu Dhabi, UAE – submitting the Brazilian with a second round rear-naked choke.

Dana White unsure on Islam Makhachev’s future

Expected to return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October in the promotion’s return to the Middle East, Makhachev has yet to he officially booked for the pay-per-view event.

And despite many billing this weekend’s UFC 289 co-main event between Oliveira and Dariush as a title-eliminator, White appears unsold.

“I have no idea,” Dana White told assembled media at the UFC 289 press conference, regarding Oliveira’s and Dariush’s chances of fighting Makhachev with a win. “We’ll see how the fight goes on Saturday night but, yeah, it obviously makes a lot of sense.”

“Right here, right now, makes a lot of sense,” White explained. “We’ll see what happens.”

Furthermore, beyond this weekend’s clash between Oliveira and Dariush, next month’s UFC 291 rematch between former undisputed lightweight champions, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje have been tipped to potentially fight Makhachev next, with a resounding performance in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dominance MMA founder Ali Abdelaziz engaged in a heated back-and-forth war of words with Dillon Danis on social media.

Abdelaziz and Danis have never been friendly with one another, much of that stemming from their rivalry-by association as Danis was Conor McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach while Abdelaziz managed the Irishman’s greatest rival, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Recently, Danis took a shot at another of Abdelaziz’s clients, Islam Makhachev which sparked a fiery exchange between the two on Twitter.

It all started when Makhachev innocently asked why he was missing his blue checkmark, a symbol long associated with verified accounts on the social media platform. Seeing an opportunity to strike, Danis delivered a snarky response to the reigning UFC lightweight world champion. “You need to get your blue belt before you get the blue tick you bum,” Danis quipped.

Hours later, Ali Abdelaziz snapped back. “Stop talking trash to the champion your bum,” he responded.

Dillon Danis Makes Things Personal With Ali Abdelaziz

Things escalated from there as Danis returned fire asking Ali Abdelaziz, “How’s Noah?” For those that do not know, Noah is the son of Ali Abdelaziz. Many fight fans were unaware that Abdelaziz had a kid until Conor McGregor mentioned him during a UFC 229 pre-fight press event.

Noah is actually a big guy now he can slap you too, you are an embarrassment,” Abdelaziz tweeted in response.

It was then that Danis took things a step further, alleging that Abdelaziz had abandoned his son at a young age after becoming an informant. “How would you know? You abandoned him when you became an informant for being a terrorist,” Danis replied.

Dillon Danis has made a career out of running his mouth on social media in recent years. The 2-0 fighter showed a lot of promise in his first two appearances with Bellator MMA, but it has been four years since he last competed. During that time, Danis has attempted to stay relevant in the world of combat sports by calling out practically every fighter under the sun and issuing outlandish challenges that he knows will never come to fruition.

Charles Oliveira maintains he will fight Islam Makhachev for title UFC 289 I'm next I'm in line next

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has denied claims from Islam Makhachev’s head coach, Javier Mendez that he will miss out a rematch with the Russian even with a win at UFC 289 – maintaining he is next in line to the throne should he beat Beneil Dariush this weekend.

Oliveira, the current #1 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he headlined UFC 280 last October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – suffering a second round arm-triangle submission loss to Makhachev in the pair’s vacant title fight.

With the defeat, Sao Paulo native, Charles Oliveira saw his division-best 12-fight winning run halted by Makhachev, as well as missing out on the opportunity to reclaim gold which he lost to the scales at UFC 274 last May.

And now slated to co-headline UFC 289 this weekend in an expected title-eliminator against Dariush in Vancouver, Canada, Oliveira’s chances of securing a title rematch with Makhachev have already been shot down by the aforenoted, Mendez – who claims Dariush is the only contender elect with a win on Saturday.

“I want [Beneil Dariush] to win [at UFC 289] because I feel he deserves it,” Javier Mendez said. “And Charles (Oliveira), I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know if we’ll get Charles even if he does win. It’s all based on what the UFC looks at the algorithm for, who’s gonna get the most money. Charles winning is not gonna be enough.”

“I think it’s gonna be (Justin) Gaethje or Dustin (Poirier) that’ll get the shot if Beneil doesn’t win,” Mendez explained. “Beniel wins, he gets the shot. I want Beneil, only because he’s a great challenge and he deserves it. But if Charles wins, then, hey, good for him too. Then Charles will probably have to fight one more time.”

Charles Oliveira believes a win at UFC 289 will secure him title rematch with Islam Makhachev

However, according to Oliveira, neither incoming UFC 291 headliners, former interim champions, Dustin Poirier nor Justin Gaethje – whom the Brazilian holds a win over, will leapfrog him if he wins at UFC 289 this weekend.

“Whoever wins this fight [at UFC 289], this Saturday, is gonna go for the [lightweight] title [against Islam Makhachev],” Charles Oliveira told assembled media during his availability ahead of UFC 289 this weekend. “I’m next – I’m in line for it.”

Javier Mendez no to Islam Makhachev Charles Oliveira rematch after UFC 289

Javier Mendez, the head coach of undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev has pumped the brakes on a title rematch between his student and former division titleholder, Charles Oliveira – even if the Brazilian emerges victorious from UFC 289 this weekend in his title-eliminator with Beneil Dariush.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 280 back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE – submitting the former undisputed division champion, Charles Oliveira in the pair’s vacant title fight.

Returning to the Octagon earlier this year in the main event of UFC 284 in Perth, Australia – Makhackala native, Makhachev successfully retained his crown in a close, unanimous decision win over current featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski on enemy territory.

As for Oliveira, the Brazilian has yet to return to active competition since seeing his 12-fight winning run halted by Makhachev last October in the Middle East, however, is scheduled to co-headline UFC 289 this weekend in Canada.

Javier Mendez uninterested in title rematch between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira

Billed as a potential title-eliminator at the weight class by many, Charles Oliveira’s chances of securing a rematch with Makhachev in Abu Dhabi again this October have been shot down by the above-mentioned, Mendez, however – even if he defeats the streaking Dariush in ‘The Great White North’.

“I want [Beneil Dariush] to win [at UFC 289] because I feel he deserves it,” Javier Mendez said on his podcast. “And Charles (Oliveira), I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know if we’ll get Charles even if he does win. It’s all based on what the UFC looks at the algorithm for, who’s gonna get the most money. Charles winning is not gonna be enough.”
