Alexander Volkanovski shared small insight into the alleged use of an intravenous line by his former opponent Islam Makhachev.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, the Australia native discussed his thoughts on Makhavev’s weight on fight night then hinted at Makhachev using an IV to rehydrate after his weight cut to 155 pounds.

Volkanovski’s teammate Dan Hooker took to social media today and spoke about how Makhachev allegedly hired a nurse to provide an IV for rehydration. He went on to call the 155-pound champion a “cheater”. Makhachev successfully defended his lightweight title against Volkanovski this past weekend at UFC 284.

Volkanovki’s interview was taped before Hooker’s comments.

Yeah, 178, 180 [pounds] I think [Islam Makhachev] would’ve been. I heard he gets up to 180, like 83 kilograms close to it. You fill up pretty quick on the IV’s and stuff like that…Maybe that’s a little shot at him.”

The UFC have not responded to the allegations.

Alexander Volkanovski is Confident He’ll Beat Islam Makhachev in a Rematch

With another opportunity, the 145-champion Volkanovski believes he’ll defeat Makhachev and become a double champion. It was his first loss since May 2013.

I don’t want to be that guy but if he was just a featherweight in my division, I’d squash him. I’d squash him. It’s a walk in the park. No offense to him but that’s legit and I can make this a walk in the park right now. We fight again and we do this rematch, which…I talked about it, Islam talked about, UFC’s talking about it, and everyone else is talking about it so I think we can make that happen. I don’t need him to be a featherweight…He can get as big as he wants, IV, whatever he does it doesn’t matter. Watch what happens next time.”

UFC featherweight Arnold Allen disagrees with the end result of UFC 284. Islam Makhachev retained his lightweight title over featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Allen said he thought Volkanovski did enough to claim double champion status. Despite the loss, Arnold praised Volkanovski for his showing and how he handled his loss in Perth, Australia.

I scored it for Volk. Rounds two, three and five,” Allen said. “He’s inspirational. Everything he does is what you want to see in your champion… The things he says after about not being afraid to fail, going out there and taking the opportunity. Yeah, you can not respect that guy.”

Allen also said that he believes there should be a rematch between Volkanovski and Makhachev for the lightweight title. If Volkanovski does win a rematch, Allen believes he’ll stay at lightweight.

Arnold Allen Has An Upcoming Fight Against A Former UFC Champion

The 29-year-old is scheduled to fight Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night on April 15. Holloway is a former UFC featherweight champion. He won the interim belt in December 2016 and went on to unify it against José Aldo at UFC 212. He defended the title three times before dropping it to current champion Volkanovski.

Allen is on a 12-fight unbeaten streak dating back to August 2014. He last defeated Calvin Kattar by TKO last October. He also has wins over Dan Hooker, Sodiq Yussuff, and Gilbert Melendez.

The England native spoke about Holloway and the damage he’s gained over his fighting career.

He’s only human right? The damage has got to catch up to you. He’s not much older than me but he has been in a lot of crazy fights against top-tier athletes and he’s given a lot of damage but he always takes as much as gives as well,” Arnold said. “What you’re expecting from me is probably what I’m going to say. I’m expecting the best version, I’m preparing for the best, [and] I’m training for the best.

Chael Sonnen Islam Makhachev UFC 284

Former UFC light heavyweight and middleweight championship challenger, Chael Sonnen has voiced his displeasure and disappointment regarding current lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev’s successful title retention against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 on Saturday, appearing to see the result for the Australian on home soil.

Headlining the Perth, Australia event from the RAC Arena, Makhachev, who is now slated to take featherweight champion, Volkanovski’s pound-for-pound number-one status, also handed the New South Wales native his first Octagon loss to boot.

Successfully defending his championship – which he clinched in a vacant title offing with Charles Oliveira back in October of last year, Makhachev secured a close, competitive unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) triumph over Volkanovski, notching his twelfth straight win to boot.

Chael Sonnen takes issue with Islam Makhachev’s win in enemy territory

Reacting live to Makhachev’s decision win over Volkanovski, the aforenoted Chael Sonnen’s initial reaction was that of a disappointed one.

See, this is so – this is so disappointing,” Chael Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “They just made the announcement, they (the judges) gave it (the fight) to Islam (Makhachev). And, I of course am saying this with some tongue-in-cheek, but, not completely, right. There’s something in every industry known as an industry standard, so it’s not the rules of the industry – you’ll have unified rules, you’ll have these three judges… but you can also have an industry standard.

Whatever happened to the good old days, when you’d go on the road, the hometown guy wins,” Chael Sonnen explained. “You guys ever follow the Olympics?… The year 1996, it was on American soil – all the Americans won, at least proportionally. What about the last Olympics they were in Tokyo, and all of a sudden, there was a whole load of Japanese winners. That’s how you do it. You go the distance in a great fight like that… you have a sold-out arena cheering for Volkanovski – if you’re a judge with any level of industry standard… you rip Islam off, and you give it to Volkanovski. And I’m only partly kidding about that.

UFC color-commentator, Joe Rogan, who was hosting a Fight Companion podcast episode during the vent, also voiced his displeasure with the result of Makhachev’s fight with Volkanovski.

Oh my God, look at (Islam) Makahchev, he realises now,” Joe Rogan said. “He realises now, he just f*cking lost – 100 percent. Let’s hear it [the decision]. 48-47. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. We were just – we were convinced – we might have been biased. We might have to watch it. I don’t know, I don’t think so. Let’s see what the online people think, because in my eyes, I thought it was 3-2 (to Alexander Volkanovski). Oh my God. This sucks. Listen to the crowd.

Islam Makhachev UFC 284 Dan Hooker Cheat

Undisputed UFC lightweight champion appears to have responded to claims from former opponent, Dan Hooker that he cheated ahead of his UFC 284 title fight with Alexander Volkanovski – with the Auckland striker claiming Makhachev had used an illegal intravenous drip to help in the rehydration process.

Makhachev, the undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 284 last Saturday in Perth, Australia against Hooker’s training partner, undisputed featherweight best, Volkanovski, successfully defending his lightweight crown in a competitive unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) triumph.

The victory came as American Kickboxing Academy staple, Islam Makhachev’s twelfth consecutively, following a prior lightweight title win over former champion, Charles Oliveira last October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Dan Hooker slams cheating accusation on UFC champion, Islam Makhachev

However, in the aftermath of Saturday’s main event clash, Hooker, a past foe of Islam Makhachev, claimed the latter had utilized an illegal method to help in the rehydration process following Friday’s official weigh-in – claiming Makhachev hired a nurse upon arrival in Australia to administer an IV drip.

Hooker’s unfounded claims would see Makhachev face sanctions if proven true, however, with fighters under the UFC banner facing a minimum of two-years suspended if they utilize an IV drip to help rehydrate following weigh-ins.

“Dumb c*nt thinks he (Islam Makhachev) can fly to Australia hire a nurse to give him an I.V and we won’t find out.” Dan Hooker tweeted. “Cheating dog.”

Appearing to respond to Hooker’s claims, Makhachev posted a video on his official Instagram story alongside members of his team – chanting “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi” – with the post captioned with, “Australia, are you upset? But I told you will (sic).”

Fighting back in October 2021 on ‘Fight Island’, Makhachev managed to land a dominant first round submission victory over Hooker – stopping the City Kickboxing staple with a kimura in the first frame.
