Israel Adesanya vs. Kelvin Gastelum early betting odds are out as these two fighters prepare to battle it out.

The two title contenders are slated to meet for the interim UFC middleweight title at the upcoming UFC 236 pay-per-view event. The reason for this fight is due to UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker being sidelined due to a hernia.

The Las Vegas Superbook has released opening odds for the bout. Currently,Adesanya listed as a -190 favorite against Gastelum at +160. Thus, for those looking to bet on this fight, a $100 bet on Gastelum would net $160. A $190 bet on Adesanya would be needed to gain $100.

Gastelum made his return to the middleweight division back in 2016 where he surged up the rankings. Thus, he became a title contender with wins over the likes of Souza, Michael Bisping, Tim Kennedy, and Johny Hendricks. He has not fought inside of the Octagon since May 2018 when he beat Souza.

On the flip side, Adesanya earned the biggest win thus far in his pro-MMA career in his latest fight. He scored a decision win over former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the headliner of the UFC 234 pay-per-view event. This event took place on February 9, 2019 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Since Adesanya (16-0) signed with the UFC, he is 5-0 in the Octagon where he has made his name known as a rising prospect in the division. He scored a decision win against Brad Tavares on July 6 in Las Vegas and then over Derek Brunson at UFC 230 by first round TKO.

Israel Adesanya is on a quest to prove that he is the best middleweight in the world.

One accomplishes that by winning the 185-pound title in the UFC. However, according to “The Last Stylebender,” winning UFC gold doesn’t hold too much weight in the eyes of Adesanya. To him, it’s just a piece of gold that ‘looks good on black skin’ (via MMA Fighting):

“I’ve said this on record,” Adesanya said. “F*ck the belt. It’s just a trinket you collect along the way. At least when it’s said and done, I can say I was an interim champion and the unified champion as well.

“Everything just makes for a good story so I’m not really flustered about interim or real. It’s just a belt. It looks looks good on black skin. I wear gold all of the time. I collect gold like a magpie.

“A magpie is a bird that collects shiny things. It’s a black and white bird and they like shiny things.”

Adesanya will co-main event UFC 236 on pay-per-view (PPV) against Kelvin Gastelum. The pair will contest for the interim middleweight championship. The action goes down from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 13, 2019.

The winner will likely be unifying their title with undisputed champ Robert Whittaker once he’s healthy enough to return.

Robert Whittaker questions the hype that the UFC and fight fans are building for rising prospect Israel Adesanya.

The contender scored a unanimous decision win over former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the headliner of UFC 234 on February 9, 2019, from Melbourne, Australia.

With Whittaker set to be out of action until this summer, the UFC decided it was best to have Kelvin Gastelum and Adesanya battle it out for the interim middleweight title at UFC 236.

The UFC middleweight champion made it known during a recent interview that he thinks Adesanya’s performance against Silva was underwhelming.

“I wasn’t impressed with his performance against Anderson,” Whittaker said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show (H/T to MMANews). “If anything, I was impressed with Anderson’s performance against Adesanya. Anderson is not in his heyday anymore. He’s easily on his way out. Everyone can see that. And for Anderson to put up such a good fight.

“You know, I gave Anderson that second round. For him to put up such a good fight against a dude who’s on a tear with such a high-level striking skillset, and is running through people, I thought props to Anderson.”

“Adesanya’s very good. Don’t get me wrong. I just think he’s trying to build a hype train that doesn’t exist. Get Adesanya to run the gauntlet like I did,” Whittaker said. “Let’s see if he looks the same afterwards.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.
