Jack Hermansson believes he remains the biggest threat to the middleweight champion.

Hermansson is coming off a tough decision loss to short notice replacement Marvin Vettori. It was the second loss in the past three fight for the Swedish middleweight contender. He hopes to get things back on track when he faces Edman Shahbazyan at UFC 262 on May 15.

Despite his recent stretch, Hermansson still believes he matches up well against middleweight king Israel Adesanya. Speaking to Curtis Calhoun for LowKick MMA, Hermansson spoke about the potential matchup and the holes he says have been exposed in Adesanya’s game.

“I think that I’m probably the hardest matchup for him out there,” Hermansson said of the titleholder. “I believe that me and probably Chris Weidman… he’s a similar style as myself. I think I have a little bit more of a devastating ground and pound, he probably has a little bit of better wrestling, but I think myself and Chris are the hardest matchups for Adesanya in this division.”

“I think Blachowicz showed us a little bit of that,” Hermansson continued. “That Adesanya’s bottom game maybe isn’t the best. If I end up on top of him, I think he’s in big trouble. I see myself as the hardest matchup for him in this division.”

Hermansson’s ground game has undoubtedly caused problems for his opposition in the past. Three of his past four wins have come by submission, with two of them coming by his patented guillotine. On paper, in certainly appears as though Hermansson does have to tools to cause the middleweight king trouble.

However, before any talk of a potential showdown against Adesanya can truly gain any traction, Hermansson first has to get by Shahbazyan. The Ronda Rousey/Edmond Tarverdyan protégé is coming off the first loss of his career, but had previously run up a perfect 11-0 start to his career with 10 first-round finishes. The winner of the fight will immediately be thrown back into title contention, while the loser will find themselves quickly losing their footing in a suddenly crowded middleweight division.

Jack “The Joker” Hermansson has always been one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC’s middleweight division. From his impressive performance against Jacare Souza, to his submission win over Kelvin Gastelum, Hermansson has always been right at the edge of a shot at the middleweight title.

After falling to Marvin Vettori last December, Hermansson feels like a born-again fighter and is re-motivated to put the entire division on notice in his upcoming matchup with Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC 262.

Hermansson spoke with LowKickMMA about facing Shahbazyan next Saturday in Houston, at just the second full-capacity UFC event since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He’s a good opponent and a great standup fighter,” Hermansson said. “He’s a good challenge, but on the other hand I believe my style is a good match up against him. I feel very ready to fight.”

Hermansson went through quite the pathing leading up to his fight with Vettori at UFC Vegas 16. After being originally scheduled to face Darren Till, he went through Till pulling out of the fight due to injury and replacement Kevin Holland failing to pass the COVID-19 protocol. Eventually, the UFC matched up the Norwegian star against Vettori in a five-round war in which he lost by unanimous decision.

Obviously, the result of his fight against Vettori has left a bitter taste in his mouth; and he’s hoping for a rematch in the near future regardless of the circumstances.

“I think we’re gonna meet again for sure,” Hermansson told LowKickMMA.”It was a good fight, we fought hard for five rounds, and it just didn’t go my way. Whatever it takes to get to that belt, whatever it takes.”

Hermansson isn’t looking past Shahbazyan, one of the hottest prospects in the UFC’s stacked middleweight division. The 23-year-old is coming off of his lone defeat in the UFC against Derek Brunson at UFC Vegas 5 and enters UFC 262 with a lot to prove as well.

But in the back of his mind, Hermansson hasn’t stopped thinking about what it would mean to eventually compete for a championship belt; especially against middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

“I’m probably the hardest matchup for him out there,” Hermansson said when asked about a future bout against Adesanya. “Blachowicz showed some weaknesses in his game, his bottom game is definitely not the best. If I can get on top of him, he’s in big trouble.

UFC 262 will feature the lightweight title fight between top contenders Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira. The UFC fanbase and media shouldn’t sleep on “The Joker” as he competes in a massive fight in the middleweight division. 2021 is a fresh start for a lot of us, and Hermansson has a chance to make this the best year of his career.

Top middleweight contender Jack Hermansson has confirmed he suffered a “broken eye socket” in his five-round decision defeat at the hands of Marvin Vettori at UFC Vegas 16. ‘The Italian Dream’ seized his short-notice opportunity opposite the #4 ranked middleweight Hermansson last night.

Vettori dropped Hermansson with a left hand early, and briefly threatened with a guillotine as the Swede survived the first-frame. In round two he was able to dictate the pace and out grapple Hermansson. ‘The Joker’ enjoyed much more success in round three and it looked like the tide was turning. However, a fired up Vettori emerged for round four and both men went to war. It was more of the same from Vettori and Hermansson who let it all hang out in the final round before the judges awarded Vettori the unanimous decision win.

Following his defeat, Hermansson looked pretty busted up and was transported to the hospital where it was confirmed he suffered a broken toe and orbital bone. ‘The Joker’ took to social media from his hospital bed to confirm his injuries and thank his fans for their unwavering support.

“Broken toe and broken eyesocket but not a broken spirit,” Hermansson wrote. “The goal remains the same Thank you for your support. #thejokerdominates”
