Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Renato Moicano has handed former Cage Warriors lightweight champion, Jai Herbert his second consecutive loss since his transition to the UFC — in the form of a second round rear-naked choke at UFC Vegas 30 to open the main card.

Utilising his elite grappling and wrestling early in the bout, Moicano, who himself was returning from a big knockout loss to the rising, Rafael Fiziev at UFC 256 last December, managed to take Herbert’s back with seconds remaining in the second round, following a prolonged beating and bloodying of Herbert in the fourth minute.

Locking his hands and finding his forearm under the neck of the former Cage Warriors 155lbs best, Herbert, Moicano handed the British fighter his second straight loss, following a damaging knockout defeat to his compatriot, Francisco Trinaldo on ‘Fight Island’ last year.

Below, catch the highlights from Moicano’s submission stoppage over Herbert.

Jai Herbert

One of the UK’s most promising up-and-coming talents, Jai Herbert, currently has a fight booked against Drakkar Klose, as the two prospects look to compete enter LW rankings. ‘The Black Country Banger’ recently sat down with LowKickMMA, to speak about his upcoming fight with Klose, as well as the rest of his goals for 2021.

A former Cage Warriors Lightweight Champion, Herbert tore through the promotions elite 155er’s in only 2 years. The domination over his division secured him a UFC contract, with his debut initially scheduled for UFC London. However, as was the case of many fights in 2020, it was promptly cancelled and rescheduled for Fight Island: 3.

Herbert’s debut was against UFC Lightweight veteran Francisco Trinaldo. After a tightly contested first round, Herbert clearly went ahead in the second. However, it was in the third round where Trinaldo threw a wild overhand that clipped ‘The Black Country Banger,’ ending the fight.

Despite this, Herbert stated that there was never a point where he felt out of his element or outclassed in anyway.

I wasn’t in there thinking, oh my God I’ve never seen anything like this before, not at all,” Herbert told LowKickMMA. “I was under pressure a bit in the first round, then towards the end of the round I started taking over, clipped him with a good knee. Then I started laying some good shots on him.”

“I was just cruising, and then he caught me with that shot. So nah, I don’t think there was a massive difference (between us).” As I say, I’ve been training with some of the best guys in the world at the Renegade, so I’m being put under pressure all the time. I know I belong in the UFC, I belong to that level.”

In regards to Herbert’s next opponent, Drakkar Klose, Jai had the following to say about him: “He’s a good fighter, top competition. I feel like my boxing, my movement and my explosiveness, my getting up off the ground, my Thai, my clinch. Everything. That’s gonna play a big factor in this fight and I’m confident of getting the victory, by stoppage. It’s gonna be an exciting fight.”

Whilst Herbert made it clear that he was in no way looking past his immediate opponent, he still has a clear set of goals to achieve in the coming year. I’m fully focused on this fight. I’m not looking at the next fight.. Obviously I have my goals, I wanna get into the top 15.”

“I’d like to fight 3, 4 times this year, you know what I mean. If they want me to, (then) more, I’m looking to stay busy. Stay busy, stay active and move up the rankings. (And) Just improve as a martial artist.”

Jai Herbert is set to face Klose on February 20th, will you be watching? Let us know!

Francisco Trinaldo: Herb Dean Could Have Stopped Fight Earlier

While Francisco Trinaldo respects Herb Dean’s position as the referee, even he felt his fight with Jai Herbert could have been stopped sooner.

One of the major talking points of UFC Fight Island 3 this past weekend was Dean’s controversial stoppage of Trinaldo’s knockout win over Herbert.

Herbert fell to the ground after a delayed response with Trinaldo refusing to land more strikes as he waited for Dean to stop the fight. However, Dean let it continue as Trinaldo landed a couple more before the fight was eventually stopped.

The stoppage has since led to a lot of debate as well as controversy with commentator Dan Hardy notably shouting at Dean to stop the fight at the time. As far as Trinaldo is concerned? He believes the fight could have been stopped earlier.

However, it ultimately depends on the referee.

“It could’ve been stopped earlier, but I’m a fighter, not a referee,” Trinaldo told reporters at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I go there to do my job and the referee is the one in charge.

“I saw and stopped a little bit and waited, but the referee didn’t stop the fight so I continued on. The referee is in charge.”

Trinaldo Wants Diego Sanchez

The controversy took some of the gloss off Trinaldo’s win as he continues to be a major problem even at the age of 41.

However, he notably missed weight for the first time against Herbert and now plans on moving up to welterweight. He even has an opponent in mind.

“‘Ive thought about it before and I really want to fight Diego Sanchez,” Trinaldo explained. “I’ve been watching him fight for a long time, I have a training partner who faced him back in the day and it really made me train even harder.

“I think it’s a fight where the fans are really going to be the ones winning and it’s just a fight I really want to have in the UFC. He’s also a veteran like me.”

Age is clearly not a factor for the Brazilian, who feels any fighter can continue fighting as long as they have the passion to do so.

“I think a fighter needs to fight for as long as he has that desire and that want to fight,” Trinaldo added. “If he doesn’t feel like he no longer has that passion, then he should stop fighting. I really have that desire, this is what I do best. And if one day I don’t feel like doing this anymore, I’ll just set up a hammock under a tree and just chill out.”
