Alistair Overeem has officially called out Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Overeem is on a two-fight winning streak and has won four of his last five overall following his most recent TKO win over Augusto Sakai.

His only setback during that run was a controversial knockout defeat to Rozenstruik in December with just four seconds remaining in the fight. Overeem was well on his way to a lopsided decision victory until an overhand right from Rozenstruik busted his lip open and dropped him.

The former K1 champion wasn’t knocked out cold and did get up right away only for the referee to call an end to the fight in favor of Rozenstruik.

Overeem has since regarded that fight as a win for him as he looks to earn UFC gold in what he is labeling as one final run. However, given the state of the division, it appears Overeem sees no other matchup that makes sense for him other than a rematch with Rozenstruik.

“Let’s run it back @ufc”

Since his win over Overeem, Rozenstruik would get brutally knocked out by Francis Ngannou in May earlier this year. However, he did bounce back with a knockout of former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 252 in August.

All things considered, a rematch certainly does make sense for both fighters and could put the winner on course for the next title shot.

Alistair Overeem is open to the idea of a rematch against Jairzinho Rozenstruik who he believes only beat him due to a poor piece of refereeing.

Overeem stretched his winning run to two last night when he rallied to score a fifth-round stoppage victory in his UFC Vegas 9 main event fight against Augusto Sakai. Prior to that ‘The Demolition Man’ survived an early onslaught from Walt Harris to pick up a TKO win in the second round of their main event fight earlier this year, to make it four wins in his last five fights.

Overeem’s lone loss during that period came at the hands of Rozenstruik. The heavyweight legend dictated the vast majority of their five-round fight and was well on his way to a lopsided points win at UFC Washington. Rozenstruik landed a vicious punch that dropped ‘Reem’ just before the final round ended. The decorated Dutch kickboxer was still conscious but badly hurt. Referee Dan Miragliotta decided to step in and wave off the fight rather than see if Overeem could survive the remaining four seconds.

Speaking to media after his big win at UFC Vegas 9 Overeem expressed his willingness to rematch Rozenstruik but he seemed unenthused by the fight.

“Well Rozenstruik, I destroyed that man. I schooled him,” Overeem said. “In my opinion, it was a very bad decision by the ref waving it off with zero seconds left. I have no problem running that back. In my mind, I already beat him. It’s only on paper that he kind of got it, and he knows it, too. But no problem running it back.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Rozenstruik has since gone on to suffer a devasting KO loss at the hands of Francis Ngannou at UFC 249. Since then he has bounced back well with a KO of his own against former heavyweight titlist Junior dos Santos.

“Hey you all, I’m still sitting here at my hotel room and thinking about the fight, of course” dos Santos said on Sunday morning. “I would just like to thank all of you guys for your support, for your messages, for positive energy that you guys are always sending to me. It’s a very important part of the game, and I’m very happy to count with you guys, with your support. Thank you.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we were expecting, but I was feeling great. I was feeling ready to win. But fighting is like those surprise boxes, sometimes you get a negatively surprised by something. That’s what happened to me in the fight. I got caught, and my opponent tried to finish the fight.

“Now it’s time to wait for the dust to settle, and then think about the next step. Thank you.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
