UFC heavyweight contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik plans to call out number one contender Francis Ngannou if he beats Alistair Overeem at UFC Washington this weekend.

Rozenstruik has had a quick rise to the top of the heavyweight ranks. He is a short notice replacement for Saturdays main event fight with the veteran Overeem. Walt Harris was originally slated to face the Dutchman but was forced out of the fight due to his unfortunate and well publicized family issues.

The 31-year-old Rozenstruik is fresh off a quick knockout win over MMA legend Andrei Arlovski. Just 29 seconds was all it took for the decorated kickboxer to put down ‘The Pitbull’ last month.

Prehaps looking past Overeem during his conversation with Ariel Helwani, Rozenstruik said hes gunning for Ngannou because he’s a massive challenge and it would be a fun fight between two big scary guys. (H/T Ariel Helwani MMA Show)

“For me, beating Alistair Overeem
means a lot, but the fight I’m looking for is the Francis Ngannou fight. He’s a
big, scary guy and I think that’s amazing. You put two big heavyweights who are
strong and hit hard to create a bomb in the Octagon. I like exciting fights. To
me, that would be a great fight. That’s the goal for now,” Rozenstruik said.

“We’re looking to be the best fighter
in the world. In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. We are
professionals and I like that fight, me against Francis Ngannou, two big scary
guys. That’s exciting for me, that’s a big challenge. I really want to do that
challenge also for myself and also to entertain the UFC fans. I think everybody
wants to see that fight.”

Rozenstruik holds a perfect 9-0 record which includes three wins inside the UFC octagon. Overeem though is certainly his toughest test to date. The decorated Dutch fighter is riding a two-fight win streak. He’ll be confident of making it three in and row and ending Rozenstruik’s hopes of securing a fight with Ngannou.

Does Jairzinho Rozenstruik deserve a fight with Francis Ngannou if he beats Alistair Overeem at UFC Washington?

After more than seven years away, the UFC is returning to Washington D.C. on December 7th to provide mixed martial arts fans that live in the capital with an opportunity to see a high profile live event on their doorstep.

The main bout will see Alistair Overeem go head to head with Jairzinho Rozenstruik, after previously scheduled opponent Walt Harris was forced to pull out in tragic circumstances.

Main contenders

When it comes to the most important bout of the event, between Overeem and Rozenstruik, bookmakers seem uncertain about which of the two has the upper hand.

Some pip the pair as being neck and neck, with odds of 5/6 for both, while others see Overeem as having a slight advantage. It’s no surprise that the Dutchman is gaining slightly more favour with experts, as his experience and track record as a heavyweight competitor in both MMA and kickboxing makes him an appealing fighter to back. Rozenstruik does have age on his side, being eight years Overeem’s junior, although his slight height and reach disadvantage might cause him problems.

The main card also features a women’s strawweight bout between Marina Rodriguez and Cynthia Calvillo. In this case Rodriguez is again a marginal favourite, at least in some circles, although it seems like there is general acceptance that this will be a closely matched fight that is difficult to call ahead of time. Another women’s bout, between Aspen Ladd and Yana Kunistkaya, puts 24 year old American ahead of her Russian rival.

In all it seems like UFC on ESPN 7 will be an electric experience for the thousands of fans who are set to pour into the Capital One Arena, as well as the millions more who will be watching at home. People who want to place wagers on the outcome might not bag the biggest pay-offs from the way the odds are stacked at the moment, but that should not detract from the entertainment of the action. Perhaps playing casino games at Casumo while you watch will help keep things interesting between bouts?

UFC on Versus 6

The fact that this is only the second time that UFC has come to. is interesting in its own right, and deserves exploring in more detail in order to make some predictions about what will go down this time around.

Back in 2011 the first event in Washington D.C was capped off by a battle between Dominck Cruz, then the incumbent bantamweight champion, and Demetrious Johnson, who was considered the main contender to the title at the time.

Cruz managed to retain his title, putting on quite a show and living up to his reputation for incredible bursts of speed and some punishing attempts at submissions on his opponents. At the time, it was assumed that Cruz would walk home with a relatively easy victory, with detractors wondering if Johnson was really up to the task of taking on the champ. Even with this scepticism, the underdog did a good job of proving himself and certainly managed to match and even exceed Cruz in terms of raw speed.

Fresh off his knockout win at UFC 244, Jairzinho Rozenstruik will have a quick layoff as he steps in to face Alistair Overeem next month.

Overeem was initially scheduled to headline UFC DC in a heavyweight bout against Walt Harris on December 7. However, the latter would pull out amid the search for his missing stepdaughter.

Rozenstruik will now be Overeem’s new opponent according to UFC president Dana White, per ESPN:

“Jairzinho Rozenstruik will replace Walt Harris against Alistair Overeem on Dec. 7 in Washington DC, per UFC president Dana White,” Okamoto tweeted. “Rozenstruik, of course, is just 48 hours removed from knocking out Andrei Arlovski at UFC 244.”

Rozenstruik, of course, competed this past weekend at UFC 244 where he knocked out former champion Andrei Arlovski in under a minute. It followed his stunning nine-second knockout of Allen Crowder earlier this year as “Bigi Boi” is unbeaten with a 9-0 record.

The Surinamese heavyweight is currently ranked No. 14 in the UFC rankings and a win over Overeem — currently ranked No. 6 — could see him skip a number of contenders on his way up the ladder.

What do you think of the new UFC DC main event? Who takes it?
