Jake Ellenberger suffered a tough loss Saturday night at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale – but it isn’t likely to stick.

Ellenberger was defeated by Jorge Masvidal via TKO, but only after his foot became stuck between the cage floor and the fence. The referee did not restart the contest, instead awarding Masvidal the win.

Ellenberger plans to appeal the finish with the Nevada Athletic Commission.

The Ultimate Fighter 24 finale put in a solid show in Las Vegas last night (Saturday December 3, 2016). Featuring a flyweight title fight that provided tons of fireworks, the event also gave a dose of controversial scoring in the co-main slot. When Jorge Masvidal faced Jake Ellenberger, we saw a very rare finish, perhaps unseen in the UFC’s history. Knocking each other with some hard punches in the early going, the fight ended up being stopped when Ellenberger’s toes got caught in the octagon fence. Unable to continue, ‘The Juggernaut’ was officially stopped by TKO (toe injury).

Extending his current win streak to two, Masvidal’s UFC record is now 8-4. Although he’s never been finished in the UFC, the former street fighter recently suffered back-to-back losses for the promotion. Since returning to welterweight, ‘Gamebred’ is 3-2, and the American Top Team product has some ideas about what is next.

Jorge Wants ‘Cowboy Steak’

Before facing Ellenberger at the TUF 24 finale, Masvidal accused fellow welterweight Donald Cerrone of ducking him. As per MMAFighting.com:

“I want to whoop Donald Cerrone’s ass. I don’t say I want to compete with him, because I don’t. I want to whoop his ass. He took Kelvin Gastelum from me and put lies to the public, that he’d fight anybody, any place. Right after [Cerrone’s] fight got dropped, I put my name in there,” Masvidal said. “My name was on the table. He chose Matt Brown, the guy that almost got assassinated on national TV. He chose that fight. Why? I wonder why he chose that fight over me.”

With his win over ‘The Juggernaut’ in hand, Masvidal took to Twitter with a food-related call out of ‘Cowboy.’

With Cerrone booked in to face Matt Brown at UFC 206, the Greg Jackson’s striker would be on four straight with a victory. Links to a one-time scheduled fight with Robbie Lawler still linger, but could a bout with Masvidal make sense?

Last night’s (Saturday December 3, 2016) Ultimate Fighter Season 24 Finale (TUF 24 Finale) card featured a welterweight clash between UFC veterans Jake Ellenberger and Jorge Masvidal.

Ellenberger came off of his amazing first round knockout win over Matt Brown, while Masvidal was coming off of a unanimous decision win over Ross Pearson at UFC 201 in July. The first round started off with Ellenberger landing some nice strikes, but Masvidal handled them very well.

Masvidal would then unload a blitz on Ellenberger that nearly finished him, but the veteran was able to rally back and regain himself. Then in an odd situation Ellenberger got his foot stuck in the cage and was trying to get it out, but Masvidal would win after capitalizing and jumping on Ellenberger with a plethora of punches to force referee Herb Dean to call the bout off.

A welterweight bout between two veteran fighters went down inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 24 Finale. The 170-pound stalwarts were Jorge Masvidal (31-11) and Jake Ellenberger (31-12).

“Gamebred” earned a TKO win and despite an impressive performance, his victory was unusual to say the least.

Ellenberger threw a leg kick early and Masvidal answered with one of his own. “Gamebred” caught a leg and landed two left hooks. A combination landed for “Juggernaut.” Masvidal swarmed Ellenberger with a combination including a knee to the head. He dropped his opponent and continued throwing leather. They engaged in the clinch and separated. Blood trickled down the nose of Ellenberger. A hard leg kick landed for “Gamebred.” A wheel kick found the mark for Masvidal.

Ellenberger ran at Masvidal, but his toes got caught in the fence. He had trouble getting his foot free as Masvidal threw some punches. Time was called initially for a malfunction. Referee Herb Dean ended the fight and Masvidal was awarded the TKO win in bizarre fashion.

Final Result: Jorge Masvidal def. Jake Ellenberger via TKO – R1, 4:05
