Jake Paul Believes UFC Holding Conor McGregor Back to Strengthen Rights Deal

Jake Paul thinks the UFC is intentionally keeping Conor McGregor out of the Octagon to use him as a bargaining chip.

It’s been more than three years since we last saw the Irish megastar compete. Since then, there’s been a new rumor every other week regarding when he would make his long-awaited return to MMA’s biggest stage. After lobbying hard for a fight in late 2023 and early 2024, McGregor finally got his wish, booking a main event matchup with former Bellator champion Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29.

Unfortunately, the fight never came to fruition after McGregor opted to withdraw due to, of all things, a broken pinky toe. McGregor has since pushed for a rescheduled date in December, but so far, the UFC has appeared uninterested.

Conor McGregor

During a recent episode of his BS podcast, Jake Paul offered some insight into why the UFC may be dragging its feet on locking down a fight for McGregor, suggesting that it has everything to do with the promotion’s soon-to-be expired broadcast deal with ESPN.

“Conor has two fights left on his fight deal, but the UFC is trying to renew their rights deal.” Jake Paul stated during the discussion. “They license their content, which are the fights, to platforms. So they’re trying to renew their deal, and they’re negotiating with multiple people. But, let’s say they’re going with ESPN. They’re trying to renew the deal and get the most amount of money, a part of that negotiation is, ‘Hey, we have Conor McGregor for two more fights.

“But, if he were to fight now, that wouldn’t be part of the negotiation. ‘Oh we only have Conor for one fight’. So, that’s why Conor isn’t fighting now, and this is what they do to the fighters… Each contract is different, but you don’t want to win, because you’re locked in for more three more fights. They also have all these [contract] triggers… You’re owned across the board” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Is the UFC trying to keep Conor mcGregor Locked down?

McGregor has been very open about his UFC contract, confirming in prior interviews that he only has two fights left, and it would appear that ‘Mystic Mac’ is eager to get them out of the way so he can pursue ventures outside of the Octagon i.e. boxing or a fight under the BKFC banner, a promotion he now partially owns.

Conor McGregor

With McGregor headlining eight of the 10 highest-grossing pay-per-views in UFC history, he is an undeniable asset for the promotion and could very well be used to squeeze a few more dollars out of whoever the UFC signs with once its current ESPN deal expires at the end of 2025.

Unfortunately for McGregor, that means the promotion could try to keep him under contract and stall out his last two fights for as long as possible. Of course, the organization could opt to do an open-ended deal with McGregor, allowing him to partake in other interests outside of the Octagon while retaining his services, but we all saw how it went when Francis Ngannou tried to do it.

Jake Paul Shares Francis Ngannou’s Warning: Mike Tyson is Going to Knock Me Out

Francis Ngannou thinks it’s gonna be a bad night for Jake Paul when he steps inside the squared circle for a scrap with legendary pugilist Mike Tyson.

Emanating from the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Paul vs. Tyson is scheduled to go down on Friday, November 15, and will be the former unified heavyweight champion’s first professional boxing match in nearly two decades.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

From the moment the fight was first announced, their pairing was heavily scrutinized with fans and pundits voicing concern over the 31-year age gap between the two combatants.

Paul, who has all the benefits of youth on his side, is a greater than 2-to-1 favorite to come out on top in The Lone Star State. However, not everyone is willing to count out the 58-year-old icon. During a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Paul revealed that former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou told him point blank that ‘Iron’ is going to knock him out.

“Mike is big and beefy, and thick and strong. Francis actually said that he thinks Mike is going to knock me out, which is funny,” Paul said. “But I do have to be careful in the early rounds because Mike has that crazy, crazy punching power” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Jake Paul is ready to go to war with mike tyson

With the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation sanctioning the bout as a pro fight, Paul knows that the danger of stepping inside the ring with the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ is very real.

“100 percent, man,” Paul continued. “A pro-fight means war and I don’t take it lightly. You can get seriously hurt or injured in there. If you are not in there to go to war then you should get out,” Paul added.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

Thus far, Jake Paul is 10-1 in his boxing career with seven of his victories coming by way of knockout. His lone loss came against Tommy Fury in February 2023 when ‘The Problem Child’ found himself on the wrong side of a split decision. Since then, he has bested four straight opponents, including ex-UFC star Nate Diaz and BKFC brawler ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry.

Tyson, on the other hand, has been out of competition since a June 11, 2005 scrap with Kevin McBride, though Tyson did return to the ring in 2020 for a charity exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. that went to an eight-round draw.

Tyson Fury Defends Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul Clash: 'S**t ton of money'

While most have been critical of Jake Paul’s upcoming boxing bout with Mike Tyson, former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury thinks it’ll be fantastic for the sport.

On Friday, November 15, Paul will make his 12th walk to the squared circle for a scrap with the 58-year-old icon inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

From the moment the fight was announced, pundits and fans have been heavily critical of the pairing, much of it due to the massive 31-year age gap between ‘Iron’ and ‘The Problem Child.’ However, Fury sees things differently. Speaking with The Stomping Ground, ‘The Gypsy King’ thinks boxing will benefit from having two generational superstars with millions of followers going toe-to-toe.

Not to mention, the massive amount of money both will likely walk away with once it’s all said and done.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

“I think it’s fantastic for boxing,” Fury said. You’ve got a legend in Mike Tyson, you’ve got a YouTube boxer who’s come into the game and blew it up with millions of followers and millions of views. Good, bad or indifferent, some people love him, some people hate him.

“I think it’s a really good spectacle for boxing, it brings a lot of people to the game. Who am I to say Mike Tyson shouldn’t be boxing or Jake Paul shouldn’t be boxing? Good luck to them, they’re both gonna make what I call a sh*t ton of money out of it” (h/t SecondsOut.com).

‘The Gypsy King’ isn’t ready to count out mike tyson just yet

As for how he sees things playing out, Fury thinks it’s crazy to count out the power and experience of the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet,’ even if Mike Tyson hasn’t competed in a professional boxing match in nearly two decades.

“Okay the guy’s 57-years-old, but he’s former undisputed world heavyweight king and one guy who plays computers for a living who’s come into boxing about a year ago – so pretty even match … You’ve got to admire them both and I wish them both the best of luck. I seen Mike’s training hard on his videos, and Jake Paul’s always in shape. People say it’s sh*t but I bet they still watch it.”

Currently, Tyson is sitting as a +180 underdog while Paul is a greater than 2-to-1 favorite at -240.

Jake Paul on Influencer Boxing: "It Gets Old"

Jake Paul is tired of influencer boxing.

While some people believe that ‘The Problem Child’ only appeals to the lowest common denominator of boxing fans, there’s actually a step lower. In recent years, influencer boxing has gained some ground in the sport through promotions like Misfits Boxing and Kingpyn Boxing, organizations that promote fights with social media influencers who often bring big drama, but little to no actual skill inside the ring.

Speaking with reporters during a recent PFL media scrum, Paul was asked for his thoughts on the influencer scene. Unsurprisingly, his review was less than favorable.

“At the end of the day, it gets old watching people hit like this,” Paul said while flailing his arms around. “Unless people are getting better and progressing, why would we keep on giving $40 or however many dollars it is to watch these fights where it’s just some bullsh*t?

“The hype isn’t there anymore because it’s just the same thing. Sh*t talk and fight, but they just suck. Not many of the fighters are improving. I think that’s the main problem.”

It may sound a little hypocritical considering Paul has made a name for himself competing against a host of past-their-prime MMA stars, but at least he’s testing himself against established athletes rather than the average Joe with an above-average follower count on Insta.

Jake Paul gearing up for clash with ‘iron’ mike tyson

After scoring a sixth-round TKO against BKFC brawler ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry in July, ‘The Problem Child’ will return to the ring on Friday, November 15 when he goes toe-to-toe with one of the most dangerous boxers in the history of the sweet science, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.

The two generational superstars will square off inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas with the fight airing live on Netflix to the streaming giant’s 260+ million subscribers at no extra charge.
