Ben Askren

Former UFC fighter Ben Askren will be making his highly-anticipated return to combat sports when he faces off against YouTube star Jake Paul on April 17th.

The pro boxing debut of the accomplished wrestler will be a spectacle, no doubt.

In the lead-up to the matchup, Askren has some doubts on Paul’s boxing ability.

While not having too much problem with the concept of celebrity/YouTube boxing, the former MMA welterweight champion doesn’t see too much promise into the ‘fake fighter’ that is Jake Paul.

“I think people enjoy it.” Askren told LowKickMMA about celebrity boxing. “As far as ‘Is Jake Paul a real fighter?’ No. I don’t really think so. But, do people want to watch him box? The answer is yeah.”

“There is nothing to be made from either one of his fights.” Askren added. “I always joke with some of my kids. It’s like well, you know, I want you to wrestle competition that’s at your level because if you don’t if I throw you in there against Cael Sanderson or Jordan Burroughs, you’re just going to get demolished and I’m not gonna be able to see anything. If you go get someone who’s a bum you’re just going to pin them in 10 seconds, and I’m not going to get to see anything. So with those matches that are really lopsided and in this case it’s because the other person is really terrible.”

Paul started fighting as an amateur with a TKO win against viral sensation ‘Deji’ where his corner threw in the towel late in the fight. This prompted the Paul brother to venture into the pro circuit, fighting not-so-professional competition against the likes of Aneson Gib and Nate Robinson, stars from YouTube and the NBA.

Despite 3 KO wins in a row, Askren doesn’t see “The Problem Child” as a problem, rather more as a can crusher.

“You don’t really take too much away from that because it’s too hard to because the competition is so low that pretty much no matter what he did. He was going to look good.”

Tyron Woodley

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has revealed he will be in Ben Askren’s corner when the former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder makes his professional boxing debut against Jake Paul on April 17.

Woodley and Askren have a well-documented friendship. So, of course, ‘The Chosen One’ is predicting ‘Funky’ will get it done against the YouTube star in a couple of months’ time.

“Ben has very dumpy power, that’s the best way I can explain it,” Woodley told The Schmo. “When he punches, it’s not like the super-fast [Floyd] Mayweather type stuff, but when he hits you it’s like damn that kinda f*ckin’ hurt a little bit. So in my mind, I think that he clings to guys well, we haven’t really seen him take a lot of punches. Robbie [Lawler] hit him a couple times. Obviously, he got flying kneed, but we haven’t seen him sit there and just take f*cking shots from people throwing hands at him.

“So I think he’s going to be able to get close to Jake, kinda talk a little shit to him because Ben’s been doing that since college, and then really just wear him down and wear him out,” Woodley added. “Then I think those later rounds, Ben’s been on this stage, the Bellator stage, the ONE FC stage, the UFC stage, the Olympic stage, the NCAA stage, the crowd and the lights, and everything that goes with the pazazz of putting on a show — he’s not going to be moved by. Jake, this is new to him. YouTube is one thing but when you’re in front of people and people are watching you… He showed up against those guys he fought but I think Ben’s a world-class athlete whether he looks like he can jump 40-feet off the ground or not, he’s world-class in three different sports.”

Woodley has his own big fight coming up. The welterweight great is set to take on Vicente Luque at UFC 260 on March 27. He is looking to bounce back from losing three straight fights in the UFC.

Despite being a busy man himself, Woodley insists he will help Askren in any way he can and also confirmed he will be part of Askren’s corner team come fight night.

“I’m gonna help him out, I’m gonna corner him,” Woodley said. “I’ll try to see how I can merge it in with my training camp but Ben just told me come after my fight, that’s only a week. If you can come earlier, come earlier. That’s how Ben is. Yeah, I’ll be there.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Nate Diaz has reacted to the rise of YouTube boxing star Jake Paul and his relentless pursuit of MMA fighters over the past few months.

Paul transitioned to professional boxing in 2020 and enjoyed some success against extremely low-level opposition. Most notably, the 24-year-old knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr.

Since then, Paul has been trying to secure a fight with SBG teammates Conor McGregor and Dillon Danis. He even suggested a fight with Diaz was on the table after signing on to fight former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder Ben Askren on April 17.

Diaz told ESPN that he is open to fighting Paul down the line

“No, not at that moment, no. But, at some point for sure,” Diaz said.

The UFC fan favourite hasn’t enjoyed seeing Paul’s pursuit of “real” fighters.

“He was just talking some serious fighting words to Conor,” Diaz said. “When I said something it was because he was saying stuff to Conor and those are some real fighting words for a guy who is signed to fight in a real fight. You are challenging us to a boxing match with real fighting words. No one is going to speak, even Conor doesn’t want to give him any clout.

“Someone needs to tell this guy to shut up, I wasn’t trying to have anybody’s back. But, you are talking fighting words, it doesn’t make no sense when people do that,” Diaz added. “It is like people talking like that and challenging somebody to a basketball (game). Boxing is just boxing it is only one-piece of a fight. So, someone is going to f**k you up if you don’t watch it.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Jake Paul

YouTube celebrity turned professional boxer Jake Paul is not impressed after seeing his next opponent, Ben Askren, hit the bag for the first time.

Paul transitioned to the sport last year and has enjoyed success against extremely low-level opponents. Most notably Paul knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. on November 28.

Next, he’ll face an actual fighter for the first time in Askren. ‘Funky’ retired from the MMA in 2019 after enjoying a wildly successful career that saw him hold titles in Bellator and ONE Championship.

Luckily for the social media star, Askren is primarily known or his elite level wrestling and lack of striking ability.

According to Triller founder Ryan Kavanaugh, the fight will be contested on April 17 with ten-ounce gloves in a twenty-by-twenty ring. The card will feature popular names from boxing, MMA, and social media competing in the squared circle.

Earlier this week Askren jokingly posted a clip to social media of him hitting a heavy bad with Paul’s face on.

In an interview with TMZ, Paul revealed he was amused but impressed by what he had seen.

“It’s funny, bro. I’m starting to like Ben, oddly enough,” Paul said. “He’s funny. He’s entertaining me right now. I thought that was hilarious. I thought, ‘Bro, what are you doing?’ Like what is that? And it looks like his hands are so small. It looks like he has tiny hands in that video,” Paul said.

“Hopefully, he’s just joking,” Paul added. “Hopefully, he’s just trolling. But Ben’s doing a good job to promote the fight, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m going to knock him out in one round. This guy fights and looks like a middle-aged Dutch woman.”

YouTube star Jake Paul wrote a poem in response Floyd Mayweather suggesting they will fight later this year.

‘Money’ took to social media last night to reveal he is planning to take part in three exhibition bouts in 2021. The boxing legend said his postponed fight with Logan Paul will go ahead as planned. Mayweather also suggested Jake Paul and 50 Cent as potential opponents.

Paul got wind of the call out and directed the following poem at Mayweather.

“Dear Mr Mayweather, who runs your Instagram? They need to get paid better Do us a favour and stay off social media,” Paul said on social media. “You should focus on learning to read, retirement or maybe an encyclopedia. You call me out to fight, but you’re half my height. You might beat my brother but Jake Paul is a different type. F*** your proposition, I don’t to exhibitions. We can fight on my conditions. 50-50 commissions. Oh and we haven’t forgotten you tried training Nate to beat me. I left him on conscious on the canvas. Let’s hope you’re not that easy. A quick NBA knockout – he’s never boxing again. Speaking of NBA, who knocked up your daughter my friend? After I KO Askren on Triller April 17. I would love to fight you Floyd and punch you in those fake veneer ass teeth.”

Mayweather quickly responded to his “biggest fan” with the following.

“Jake Paul is talking about he don’t do exhibitions, them two bullshit boxing matches he had were exhibitions,” Mayweather wrote. “They were not against real professional boxers. And I don’t even play when it comes to education because millions of blacks got lynched just for reading. Let me see, you went to get a black boxing trainer, try to dress like you’re black, wear jewelry like black people, try to dance like black people, but you don’t want to be BLACK. All you do is jack black swag from us. You go from groupie fan to a fake professional fighter, this world is crazy.”
