Jake Shields Opens Up On Why Diaz Brothers Haven’t Fought For So Long

Jake Shields reveals the one thing that have kept them from competing.

Jake Shields opens up on why the Diaz Brothers (Nate & Nick) haven’t fought in so long under the UFC banner. Shields should know this better than almost anyone as he has been a long time training partner and friend of these two popular stars.

Nate Diaz was supposed to fight Dustin Poirier at the UFC 230 pay-per-view event earlier this month. However, that bout was scrapped after Poirier pulled out. Diaz has not been seen in the Octagon since his rematch with Conor McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196.

On the flip side, Nick has been tied to a UFC 233 pay-per-view bout with Jorge Masvidal but the UFC has yet to announce the fight. Diaz has not been seen in the Octagon since his bout with Anderson Silva in January 2015. This fight was later overturned to a no-contest after Silva tested positive for banned substances.

Jake Shields Tells The Reason

Shields talked about their absence from competition during a recent interview (H/T to Bloody Elbow).

“I still go back to California to train with Nick and Nate Diaz. I have trained with them a lot. Currently, I am in New York so I’m not training with them as much,” Shields added. “I have trained with these guys non-stop for years now. I think they both want to fight still, just not as often.”

The former UFC title contender would continue by stating that Nate and Nick are just looking to get paid the most for their next fight. Also, Nate wants a third fight against Conor McGregor.

“Nate is just waiting for the Conor fight or big fights, and same with Nick. He was just waiting for big fights. They both had great careers already. So they are just looking for the big money fights now.”

A relative unknown before this season, Hawaii’s Ray Cooper III made a statement last night (Oct 20, 2018) at PFL 10 on NBCSN from the St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington D.C.

Cooper finished Jake Shields and Handesson Ferreira via first-round TKO’s to advance in the Professional Fighters League (PFL) $1 million welterweight tournament finale.

The Hawian faced off against Sheilds in the quarterfinal round. This fight ended much like their first encounter six months prior. However, Cooper managed to close the show in the first round this time around.

Watch Cooper smash Shields here (via Twitter):

The 25-year-old Cooper was just getting started there, however. The Hawaiian took on Ferreira in the semifinals just an hour later. Like the Shields fight before it, the Ferreira fight was another rematch for Cooper, further adding to the intrigue of the tournament structure.

But Cooper would end this fight much in the same fashion as his earlier performance against Shields, by way od violent ground and pound. Watch Cooper TKO Ferreira here (via Twitter):

Cooper entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the welterweight division. His performances on Saturday night solidified his opportunity to win $1 million payday. His opponent will be Magomed Magomedkerimov.

The two will square off at the 2018 PFL Championship (PFL 11) on Dec. 31 live on NBCSN from inside Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The MMA world has been wondering whether or not Nick Diaz will ever return to fighting after a three-year hiatus following his no-contest against Anderson Silva back at UFC 183.

That’s nearly an eternity when it comes to fight fans’ memories, but the appeal of the Stockton slugger has kept Diaz firmly in the conversation despite the extended hiatus.

Diaz’ close friend and fellow MMA fighter Jake Shields is perhaps the best person to ask when it comes to the elder Diaz brother’s return, and according to him on a recent episode of The MMA Hour, thankfully, it looks like we’ll be seeing more Stockton slaps sooner than later:

“I think he will. I think he’ll fight again soon. I think he’s mentioned it in training a little bit. I haven’t been out there so I don’t know how much he’s been training but I’m pretty sure he’s been in the gym a decent amount and I would love to see him fight again. I think he’s still got some more in him. He hasn’t been training as much but he’s still in good shape and he can come back fast.”

“Nick is a hard person to predict. Only Nick really knows what he is going to do. People always ask ‘is Nick going to show up at a press conference?’ I’m like, ‘man, I can’t even tell you.’ Nic doesn’t even tell the people close to him, sometimes. He just kind of goes out and surprises everyone. Only Nick knows what he is going to do. If I had to guess I’d say he’ll fight again.”

Shields and Diaz are longtime members of “The Scrap Pack” alongside Nick’s younger brother Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez. The MMA landscape has changed drastically since Diaz’ suspension, with Tyron Woodley holding the welterweight belt and a slew of new faces populating the division.

The 34-year-old is a former Strikeforce welterweight champion and competed against former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre in a losing effort back at UFC 158.

Who would you like to see Nick Diaz fight upon his return?
