As great as Paul Craig’s night was inside the octagon, it got a little bit better afterwards.

Craig squared off against Jamahal Hill on the main card of UFC 263. Their pairing was seen by many as a classic ‘striker vs grappler’ matchup, and it very much lived up to the billing.

The fight saw Craig pull guard early on in the contest and begin to isolate Hill’s arm. He quickly chained together a number of submission attempts, the last of which bent Hill’s arm at a horrific angle, causing it to dislocate at the elbow. Despite the obvious injury, the referee overseeing the bout, Al Guinee, somehow didn’t notice it and allowed the bout to continue. Craig continuously tried to get Guinee to stop the fight, but when his pleas fell on deaf ears, he transitioned to a triangle and let loose a number of elbows and hammerfists to mercifully draw the stoppage.

Although the victory was officially entered into the books as a TKO, Craig was honored by his coaches after the fight for his ground game. Chris Bungard, Craig’s training partner at Scottish Hit Squad, posted a video on Twitter showing coach Brian Gallagher awarding Craig his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

“My brother (Craig) receiving his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt after his massive win at UFC 263 from my coach (Gallagher),” Bungard wrote. “Toasting him and giving respect to a proper warrior (Hill).”

The win pushed Craig to 4-0-1 in his last 5 outings after starting his UFC career 3-4. It also earned him his sixth ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus, and kept his 100% finishing rate intact. His draw against ‘Shogun’ Rua in their initial meeting remains the only time Craig has made it to the scorecards.

After entering the event #14 in the rankings, Craig can expect to face a top-10 opponent his next time out. Whoever he faces, they’d probably be best advised to avoid going to the ground with the newly promoted black belt.

UFC president Dana White took issue with referee Al Guinee in the Paul Craig vs. Jamahal Hill fight.

Craig and Hill opened up the UFC 263 main card in a light heavyweight encounter that saw the former sink in the armbar early on after pulling guard.

Hill kept fighting until his arm bent awkwardly indicating that he had broken it at the very least. And despite appearing to want to tap, he didn’t do so as his arm started flailing around.

Eventually, Craig had the triangle locked in placed as well and started throwing strikes on a defenseless Hill until Guinee stopped the contest.

Guinee received criticism from many for not stopping the contest the moment Hill’s arm started dangling around and White had to say something despite not wanting to get on the Arizona State Athletic Commission’s bad side.

“When an arm is flopping around like this and going both ways, you should probably stop the fight,” White said at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “I don’t want to sh*t on Arizona, they’ve been so good to us. But that’s a rough one. I heard this guy’s a jiu-jitsu black belt.”

Miraculously, it was later revealed that Hill’s arm wasn’t broken — just badly dislocated.

“They popped it back it in and the guy has full range of motion,” White revealed. “That’s nuts.”

However, that doesn’t excuse the referee’s indecision as White made a callback to Steve Mazzagatti — another referee he took issue with in the past for his late stoppages.

“Arizona Mazzagatti,” White joked when told by a reporter that the referee had a reputation for bad calls. “It makes sense then.”

Paul Craig has opened the main card of UFC 263 in quite spectacular fashion. Matching the #15 ranked, Jamahal Hill, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert managed to lock the challenger up with a first round armbar before rolling and eventually breaking Hill’s arm in a transition, forcing a poor stoppage, eventually, from referee, Al Guiney.

Meeting with Hill following an intense stare-down in the centre of the Octagon prior to the opening klaxon, Craig eventually wound up on the bottom and immediately threatened with submissions off of his back.

Attempting to setup both an armbar and then a triangle from the bottom, Craig trapped Hill’s left arm and eventually rolled, which appeared to result in a dislocation of Hill’s arm at the elbow. After some prolonged strikes from the bottom still, Craig gestured to the referee, Guiney that Hill had suffered an arm injury — forcing a stoppage.
