On January 22, “The Assassin Baby” had his first opportunity to defend the flyweight throne, but lost by a unanimous decision. Figueiredo took back the belt, and now Moreno is more determined to win the championship.

But for Moreno, regaining the belt is about much more than owning the flyweight champion title. As Mexico’s first and only UFC champion, Moreno carries a lot of weight on his shoulders.

“Man, right now, my fire is like, wow, I feel like I’m more (hungry) right now in myself, and more right now because I lost the title. I need to fix something, I need to do something in my life. I want that title back. I’m hungry because I wanna do a lot of huge things in my life, for my family, for my country. Last fight (UFC 263), with the title, the mixed martial arts in Mexico grow a lot. I need to keep working on that. Obviously, I’m very, in some points, very selfish. I want to keep doing everything for myself and my family. But, if I can help my country to do something and help other kids to accomplish their dreams, I will,” Moreno told Teddy Atlas on The Fight.

And after such a close decision, 48-47 by all judges, we will more than likely be seeing Figueiredo vs Moreno 4.

Being the world champion comes with heavy responsibility, especially if you are the first in your country to accomplish it. Moreno shares that record with Kamaru Usman, who became Africa’s first UFC champion in 2019.

A champion has the power to promote positive change. People who grew up in a similar lifestyle or culture to Moreno now have someone to look up to because something they thought impossible has just been achieved.

And to balance training, family life, and being the world champion is no easy task, yet some fighters make it look easy.

For example, Amanda Nunes and her wife have a baby girl. Kamaru Usman also has a wife and a daughter to build a future for. And Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Julianna Pena, is also a mom.

Now that Moreno has experienced failure and being a champion, reevaluating his focus could be what puts him back on top of his game.

Moreno V. Figueiredo

Since 2020, Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo have only seen each other as opponents in the cage.

The flyweights spent 13 rounds together in the Octagon.

Their first fight at UFC 256 ended in a draw. They would fight again to settle the draw at UFC 263 in 2021. “The Assassin Baby” finished “Dues Da Guerra” by rear-naked choke in round 3 and became the new flyweight champion.

It was a major feat for himself and Mexico, which never saw a UFC champion until that moment.

Deiveson Figueiredo obviously wanted the belt back. Before UFC 270 began, the Brazilian let everyone know he wanted the trilogy to avenge his loss. And when their last bout was won by unanimous decision, the belt returned to Figureido.

Should this bout take place, it will be the first time in UFC history that two fighters compete against each other for a world title four times. But the question is, will the fight take place immediately, as their sequel and trilogy bouts did? That question remains unanswered.

How soon do you want to see Brandon Moreno fight Deiveson Figueiredo again for the flyweight belt?

Vettori Believes He Would’ve Won Adesanya Fight If He Was Champion

UFC middleweight Marvin Vettori believes he would have been awarded the decision victory over Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 had he been the champion. UFC middleweight Marvin Vettori believes he would have been awarded the decision victory over Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 had he been the champion.

Vettori and Adesanya clashed for the second time in the main event of the June pay-per-view. The pair had previously fought at UFC on Fox: Poirier vs. Gaethje in 2018. In their first contest, the surging Nigerian-New Zealander emerged victorious via split decision.

While Adesanya rose up to become the UFC Middleweight Champion, “The Italian Dream” quietly worked his way into title contention with victories over Cezar Ferreira, Andrew Sanchez, and Karl Roberson. Main event wins against Jack Hermansson and Kevin Holland extended his win streak to five and booked him a rematch with “The Last Stylebender.”

Inside Glendale’s Gila River Arena, Adesanya made his third successful title defense. After a largely comfortable five rounds, the champ was awarded a unanimous decision victory.

In the aftermath of the fight, Vettori humored Adesanya and fans by claiming he’d won the fight. While many had hoped that the comment came in the heat of the moment, it appears the Italian is still holding onto the idea he should have emerged with the gold.

In a recent interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto, Vettori suggested he would have had his hand raised had he been the champion in the matchup. He also asserted that he will certainly meet Adesanya in a trilogy bout later down the line.

“There’s no way I won’t see him again. It’s just impossible. And I was saying the same thing after the first fight, and I know this time also. I want to be remembered as that guy that actually fought them all at their best, beat them all, became the champion, and eventually made history, beaten all the best. Like, this fight is a fight that—I probably would’ve won this fight even if I was the champion. So what drives me is to beat the best and always being there and showing that I’m the hungriest guy in the top 5. And I don’t think that there’s any way that I’m not gonna face him again.”

For now, Vettori’s focus must be on his next outing. The #5-ranked middleweight is set to collide with fellow former title challenger Paulo Costa in this weekend’s UFC Vegas 41 main event. With Costa’s last appearance ending in defeat at the hands of the champion last September, both men will be entering the cage on Saturday off the back of title defeats to Adesanya.

Who do you think will have their hand raised in the UFC Vegas 41 main event, Marvin Vettori or Paulo Costa?

Deiveson Figueiredo Calls For Trilogy Bout Against ‘P***y’ Brandon Moreno

Deiveson Figueiredo is demanding an opportunity to regain his flyweight crown.

Figueiredo and current flyweight champion Brandon Moreno have engaged in a pair of title fights over the past year. Their first meeting at UFC 256 produced a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate that was ultimately ruled a draw. In the immediate rematch, Moreno prevailed on top, scoring a submission victory in the third round.

Seemingly since the moment he lost his belt, Figueiredo has been calling for the chance to earn it back. However, Moreno has been less than intrigued by the idea, preferring to give the opportunity to a new contender.

In a recent interview, Figueiredo called out his rival for not affording him a chance at a rematch (H/T MMA Fighting).

“He’s a p—-,” Figueiredo said. “Brandon Moreno is a p—- because I was sick when I fought and beat him, and I gave him the rematch right away. I won that fight. They took a point away from me, he pretended to be hurt, he faked an eye poke so they would take points from me, but I still won. And now he doesn’t want to give me a rematch? He’s a p—-.”

“I expected more from him, I expected him to act like a man. What I want the most is this trilogy with him, to fight him again. I hope he’s man enough to give me that rematch.”

Though Moreno may want to face a new opponent, the fact remains that there aren’t many names in title contention. Askar Askarov, who Moreno battled to a draw in his return to the UFC, is expected to be on the shelf for the remainder of the year. Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is dropping down a weight class, but he has already been scheduled against Kai Kara-France. The fact is, Figueiredo may be most worthy of the shot.

We’ll have to wait and see what the UFC ultimately decides. If they do decide to go ahead with the trilogy, the war of words leading up to the fight should be worth the price of admission alone.

Do you think Deiveson Figueiredo should get the trilogy fight he is calling for? Let us know!

Brandon Moreno Promises UFC Title Won’t Make Him An A**hole

Though fame and success may go to some peoples heads, Brandon Moreno is confident it won’t affect him.

Moreno took the title from Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 263 after their ‘Fight of the Year’ contender at UFC 256 went to a draw. The lead-up to the rematch featured a fair amount of trash talk from the usually reserved Moreno, as he accused Figueiredo of changing his personality after winning the title. Now that he holds the belt, Moreno is adamant that fans won’t see any change in him (H/T MMA Fighting).

“We can see in the history a lot of guys who get the gold and start to change a little bit and start to be assholes,” Moreno said at the recent media lunch in Los Angeles. “I don’t want to be that guy. I was born in a very humble family that taught me a lot of good stuff in my life. I’m trying to have some fun with the people, too. I love to be champion right now. But I can give you the belt right now.”

The next man to face Moreno has yet to be revealed. Figueiredo has called for a trilogy bout, but ‘The Baby Assassin’ has made it clear that he isn’t interested in giving him another shot.

“It’s obvious Figueiredo wants the next one because he lost the last one,” Moreno said. “But man, the last fight, I dominated him, in the first round, in striking, in grappling, in wrestling, so obviously I’m open to fight again with him. But I think he needs to fight with somebody.”

Askar Askarov would appear to be the next sensible challenger, but he is apparently dealing with an injury that will keep him sidelined for up to six months. With that said, it would appear that the winner of the upcoming fight between Alexandre Pantoja and Brandon Royval could decide the next contender, or Cody Garbrandt could make his divisional debut for the title.

Who do you want to see get the next shot and Brandon Moreno’s title?

Leon Edwards Mocks Gilbert Burns: ‘You Got Knocked Out With A Jab’

Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards is not taking crap from other welterweights in the UFC after his unanimous decision victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 263.

Edwards heard many opinions about his performance against Diaz, but specifically, how close he came to getting finished right at the end of the fight. And in a recent interview with South China Morning Post, Burns added his opinion to the mix.

When asked about Edwards’ performance at UFC 263, Burns did not hesitate to pile on.

“I think Leon Edwards lost the shot just because he didn’t get a finish. He wasn’t hungry,” Burns told SCMP. “Not even criticizing the guy. I think he fought very good. He’s a very smart fighter. But he’s not a finisher. If you go all day and sometimes just, as they say, bite the mouthpiece, and go forward, and finish the fight, sometimes you’re gonna get the shot.” (H/T BJ Penn.com)

Burns’s assessment, while it may seem harsh, does have some merit. The media asked UFC president Dana White if Edwards had finally done enough to get his title shot in the post-fight interview. White answered that Colby Covington is still next, and he was unsure when Edwards would meet Usman in the octagon.

Regardless of White’s response, Edwards has contended that he has done enough to deserve a title shot. In the weeks following his performance, he has had no problem addressing anyone that thinks to the contrary. When a link to Burns’s interview was posted on Twitter, Edwards wasted no time letting the world know what he thought of Burns’s opinion.

Edwards is referring to the 3rd round stoppage loss dealt to Burns by UFC welterweight king Kamaru Usman. After Usman dealt Burns some vicious ground and pound, the referee stopped the fight, but it was a jab from Usman that started the fight-ending sequence.

It is evident that there’s no love loss between these two welterweight contenders. Maybe the UFC will have these two fight each other while Edwards awaits his shot at the title.
