MILWAUKEE – Donald Cerrone may not have been more riled up any time in his career than he was before his rematch with Jamie Varner last September.

“Cowboy” seethed through his post-workout interviews at WEC 51. He got right in Varner’s face at the weigh-ins. And he then tore right through his old nemesis in the fight.

Cerrone said then that fighting angry was something he had no problem doing. Against Charles Oliveira on Sunday at UFC on Versus 5, he doesn’t have nearly the same level of animosity. But that doesn’t mean he won’t try to seek it out to give him an advantage when the Octagon door closes.

“I can’t wait to get in the ring and see his cocky (butt) standing across from me,” Cerrone said Friday after a workout at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. “I saw him looking at me the the other day smirking, and that, to me, is cocky. I’ll smirk in the ring, you smirk back. I fight better angry.”

Cerrone (15-3, 1 NC, 2-0 UFC) has put together a respectable four-fight winning streak, all in dominant fashion. He closed out his WEC career with a win over Varner and a submission of Chris Horodecki at the promotion’s swan song show in December. He opened his UFC career, post-merger, with a submission of Paul Kelly in February and a kickboxing clinic decision over Vagner Rocha in June – that Cerrone said he wasn’t fond of his performance in that fight.

A self-described “slow starter,” Cerrone said he looks back on the rage he experienced before his rematch with Varner last year and is trying to channel it for Oliveira (14-1, 1 NC, 2-1 UFC, 1 NC).

“I try to get my mind in the same mindset as I had for Varner because when I fought Varner … there was nothing he could have done, in my mind, to beat me. I was invincible,” Cerrone said. “Getting myself back in that mindset where no one can touch me, that’s what I’m looking to get back to. What did I do, mentally, to get in that mindset? … This guy has nothing for me. What am I gonna do? That’s the mindset I’m in for this fight. There’s blood in my eyes, and I’m ready.”

With fellow lightweights Jim Miller and Ben Henderson fighting one spot up the card, and Miller’s seven-fight winning streak putting him in line for a possible title shot, Cerrone said getting a title shot isn’t something that is realistically on his mind. (Though he did joke that a Miller loss to Henderson would mess up the UFC’s possible plan, and he’d gladly take a crack at the title in that instance.)

Instead, Cerrone, who had five Fight of the Night bonuses in his 10 career WEC fights, and already has one in his two bouts in the UFC, is happen to put on crowd-pleasing performances every time he steps in the cage.

“Just go in there and fight, man,” Cerrone said. “Go in there and fight your (butt) off, like you’ve got nothing to lose. That’s what people want to see. They want to see you sit in that pocket and throw down and just take punches and give ’em right back. That’s fun. That’s when it’s a good time. Sh-ttin’ and gettin’ and goin’ hard. I hope this weekend, we can do that.”

Cerrone and Oliveira fight on the main card of UFC on Versus 5 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The main card airs live on the Versus cable channel at 9 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.

Jamie Varner was a 21-year-old junior in college fighting part-time on small shows in Arizona in 2006 when he got the call offering him a fight in the UFC. When that call came, he made the decision to leave school behind and focus on being a full-time fighter.

Five years later, Varner has been in and out of the UFC, in and out of the WEC and now back to fighting on small-time shows, having recently won a fight for the Xtreme Fighting Organization. And the state of his career right now has him going back to college even though he says he remains dedicated to his MMA career.

“I dropped out of college right before my senior year,” Varner said on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “Like some of the great football, baseball, basketball athletes, I thought, do I stay in college or do I pursue an opportunity in professional athletics? The UFC made the call for me to fight Hermes Franca, and I did that, but after I got cut I started thinking about life after.”

Varner is attending school part time at Seton Hall, continuing to work toward his degree with an eye toward eventually becoming a physician’s assistant. But that’s not the main reason he moved to New Jersey: He’s also there to train at AMA Fight Club, home of UFC fighters Jim Miller and Dan Miller, to reinvigorate his MMA career.

Varner said that when he lost to Shane Roller in the final WEC event and learned that he wouldn’t be among the WEC fighters invited to join the UFC, he was so upset that he thought about quitting the sport.

“When I got cut I felt like my girlfriend dumped me,” Varner said. “I’ve been with Zuffa for five years. I dropped out of college. I’ve been chasing this dream, all in. … I never said no to a fight. Whenever they asked me to fight, I fought.”

With that, Varner said he started thinking more about what he could accomplish as a physician’s assistant.

“I want to get that degree, go to South America, try to do Doctors Without Borders,” Varner said. “I want to travel the world and give back.”

However, it wasn’t long before Varner started getting the itch to fight again. He took the fight with XFO and won easily, and he was also in talks with Dream to go to Japan and fight Shinya Aoki, although that fight fell through. Varner says he’s still a fighter at heart and not ready to walk away any time soon.

“There’s still some tread on these tires,” Varner said. “There’s still some fights to be fought and some battles to be won. … I want to get back in the UFC and fight in the UFC.”

XFO 39 Results: Curran and Varner Victorious, Diego Sanchez Finds Soulmate

(Like we needed a reason to run this photo again. Props: MMARecap via MiddleEasy)

There were a lot of questions coming into last night’s XFO 39. Would this mark the last appearance of Jeff “Big Frog” Curran? How would Jamie Varner fair in what is not only his first fight since being released by the UFC, but a welterweight bout nonetheless? Can Felice Herrig vs. Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc possibly live up to the pre-fight staredown? The short answers are maybe, pretty well and of course not. Tune in after the jump for more details.

Jeff Curran easily handled the .500 Strikeforce veteran Billy Vaughan.  When he wasn’t busy countering every strike Vaughan threw, Curran was attempting submissions from his guard.  However, Curran was unable to finish Vaughan, and instead ended up with a unanimous decision victory.

After the fight, Big Frog let it be known that he was just a little disappointed with his current situation.  “This is the last damn time I’m fighting in the XFO,” he said before announcing that unless the UFC offers him a contract, he plans on retiring.  Will a unanimous decision over Billy Vaughan be enough to get Jeff Curran a UFC contract? If not, then is Jeff Curran serious about retirement?  Only time will tell.  For what it’s worth, Jeff Curran told Sherdog.com after the fight that he was unable to finish off Billy Vaughan due to a foot injury he suffered during the fight.

In welterweight action, former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner handled journeyman Tyler Combs with ease.  Jamie Varner abused Combs on the feet before nailing a double-leg.  After working the ground and pound, Varner transitioned to north-south and locked in a deep choke that made Combs go out.  Total time? 90 seconds.

As for Felice Herrig vs. Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc, all you need to see is Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc’s entrance.  Rivera-Calanoc walked out to the cage shouting “YES!”, Diego Sanchez style.  As for the actual fight, Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc spent most of the fight clinching with Felice Herrig, despite Herrig consistently getting the better of the clinch exchanges.  Herrig spent the rest of the fight controlling Rivera-Calanoc’s back on her way to a unanimous decision victory.

Main card results, courtesy of MMAmania.com:

Jeff Curran def. Billy Vaughan via unanimous decision
Jamie Varner def. Tyler Combs via technical submission (north-south choke) in round 1
Felice Herrig def. Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc via unanimous decision
Mike Stumpf def. Dan Bolden via unanimous decision in round 3
Dan Aguirre def. Terrance Kinney via submission (triangle armbar) in round 1

Former WEC title challenger Jeff Curran has received a new opponent for his main event fight at XFO 39 this Friday at the Sears Centre near Chicago.

Billy Vaughan, who in March made his Strikeforce debut in a loss to Jorge Gurgel, will step in for Curran’s original opponent Joe Pearson, who was forced to withdraw after getting in a car accident, as first reported by MMAWeekly.com.

Due to the late notice, the fight will be contested at 145 pounds according to Curran’s management, SuckerPunch Entertainment. Curran, who has been reinventing himself in the 135 pound division, will move up just for this fight.
