Former two-weight UFC world champion, Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier has revealed he briefly contemplated ending his recent retirement, in pursuit of recently minted light heavyweight champion, Jan Blachowicz’s crown.

Cormier, a former undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight champion himself, called time on his illustrious career following UFC 252 in August in a rubber-match with current heavyweight best, Stipe Miocic, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to the Ohio native.

The Louisiana born veteran has featured prominently as a colour-commentator under the UFC’s banner in the last few years, often partnering Joe Rogan and Jon Anik at the commentary booth. Whilst a career in the commentary booth and as an analyst is most certainly on the horizon for the former Olympian, Cormier revealed recently that he considered coming out of retirement to clash with Blachowicz, albeit briefly.

I’ve got to be honest,” Cormier explained to MMA Fighting recently. “When Jan Blachowicz was like, ‘hey, you want to disrespect me, get off the couch and come fight me.’ And I think to myself maybe I’ll fight Jan Blachowicz. I’ll go fight him and get this done and then I can walk away. That lasted about fifteen minutes and then I completely understood that I was completely done.

The longtime American Kickboxing Academy mainstay would go on to detail how his brief idea of a comeback stemmed from the current lie of the light heavyweight land, and how he vacated the crown in search of heavyweight gold, without actually losing the championship.

Obviously every great fighter feels they can win,” Cormier said. “I was like ‘maybe I’ll go fight Jan Blachowicz’cause there seems to be a path for that. When I left 205(-pounds), I just kind of left. I vacated the title and now that this new champion is there with not many big-name fights on the horizon.

I thought about that for like fifteen minutes and then I was like you know what? I’m good,” Cormier jokingly said. “The thought of going down to 205(-pounds) and all this other stuff. Yeah, I think I’m fine. That was it.

Cormier, a former light heavyweight championship holder had managed three successful defences of the title, picking up victories over Alexander Gustafsson, Anthony Johnson, and Volkan Oezdemir.

While Cormier has noted his fleeting idea of a return to the Octagon, former KSW light heavyweight best, Blachowicz, is widely expected to attempt his first title defence, possibly in March, opposite current 185-pound best, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya.

UFC president, Dana White had announced the promotion’s plans to pair Blachowicz with Adesanya following former middleweight best, Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker’s apparent rejection of a title rematch with Adesanya, something he’s firmly refuted.

A date or event for Blachowicz proposed clash with Adesanya has yet to be determined, with recent UFC Vegas 13 big winner, Glover Teixeira also campaigning to meet with Blachowicz ahead of the latter, after notching his fifth consecutive light heavyweight win against Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos.

Glover Teixeira may just have earned the next light-heavyweight title shot with his emphatic third-round submission win of top contender Thiago Santos.

The 41-year-old emerged victorious from a back-and-forth main event at UFC Vegas 13 last night. Teixeira used his wrestling, ground strikes, and submission skills to pull of a second consecutive upset win. Teixeira stretched his winning streak to five against Santos who was heavily favoured to beat him. As was Anthony Smith when he fell to a fourth-round TKO loss at the hand of the former title challenger early this year.

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz was seriously impressed with his 205lb rival. The Polish striker is currently believed to be squaring off against the middleweight king, Israel Adesanya but took to social media to explain how Teixeira could leapfrog ‘Stylebender’.

“Great fight and incredible run by @gloverteixeira,” Blachowicz wrote. “You totally deserve to fight for the title and get taste of the #LegendaryPolishPower. If Adesanya can’t wait till March, let’s go #UFCVegas13.”

UFC president Dana White was also very impressed with Teixeira. He told Laura Sanko on the UFC Vegas 13 post-fight show that Brazilian had made him rethink the current light-heavyweight title picture, he said.

“I was sitting listening to him give his interview – he’s not wrong. It’s like, ‘I deserve the shot, I’ve been here forever.’ He’s on a streak, he looked great tonight. What’s funny is, every time I count this guy and think that I don’t know if you got it in you, he proves me wrong. He looked incredible tonight.”

“That’s something we need to figure out,” White said. “But I heard him and I agree with him and I’m taking him serious. So, yeah. I’m not going to doubt this guy any more.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

While he expects Israel Adesanya to do well at light heavyweight, Glover Teixeira believes the middleweight champion will have to deal with some big differences.

Teixeira takes on Thiago Santos this weekend in a bout that was initially expected to determine who would face Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title next.

However, UFC president Dana White recently revealed that Adesanya would be moving up to challenge Blachowicz in an attempt to become a two-weight champion.

And Teixeira — currently on a three-fight winning streak — believes the extra 20 pounds will play a major factor for Adesanya despite his skillset.

“He’s good and would get to the top, for sure,” Teixeira told MMA Fighting. “He’s good as hell, good athlete, good fighter, super intelligent, and for sure would get to the top, but the weight [difference], everything counts.

“I know that because I train with heavyweights, and it’s hard. The fatigue, the pressure is different.”

As for Blachowicz? Teixeira didn’t expect him to become champion — at least in the way that he did so following a second-round TKO win over Dominick Reyes.

However, given that the fight was entirely on the feet, Teixeira warned Blachowicz that he can’t just stand still should they face each other in the future.

“He can’t stand still like that against me,” Teixeira added. “He has to move. If he doesn’t move, he’s going down. (Blachowicz and Reyes) didn’t shoot once in two rounds. I won’t just stand and trade with the guy, I’ll mix it up with strikes and takedowns, and that confuses him.”

At 41, this may well be the Brazilian’s last chance at becoming the light heavyweight champion and he could go one step closer with a win over the returning Santos on Saturday.

Israel Adesanya Claims Light Heavyweight Title Win Would Be A ‘Big F*ck You’ To Jon Jones

Ahead of current UFC middleweight champion, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya’s leap to light heavyweight to challenge for gold opposite, Jan Blachowicz, the undefeated striker has claimed a triumph would be a “big f*ck you” to arch-rival, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.

Adesanya, who has already scored two successful title defences since claiming the undisputed 185-pound title back in October of last year, is set to make his light heavyweight promotional debut in his next fight according to organizational leader, Dana White, where he’ll challenge for championship spoils from the get-go.

Balchowicz, who claimed the title vacated by former two-time division best, Jones at UFC 253 in September, where soon to be opponent, Adesanya took another successful title knockback win over Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa – took out Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes in two rounds.

City Kickboxing mainstay, Adesanya, who’ll attempt to become a two-weight world champion held simultaneously in just ten Octagon appearances, has poked fun at Jones, who himself is planning a heavyweight leap next year – pointing out the fact that he’s made the jump in division inside ten fights, compared to Jones’ thirteen years in the UFC.

“”It’s just a big f*ck you to him (Jon Jones), just to be like, I did something you couldn’t,” Adesanya explained to Submission RadioI mean, he cleared the division of the light heavyweight twice over and then started fighting recycled middleweights. So, don’t come at me talking about ‘move up in weight and then fight’ when you can’t even do the same thing after over ten years in the company. So, I’m actually about to do. It’s a good fight for me to do it with.

If Adesanya adds the light heavyweight crown to his UFC trophy cabinet, and Jones claims the heavyweight title upon his division arrival, the former has spoken of his intentions to becomes the promotion’s first-ever three-weight world champion in a mouth-watering meeting with the Jackson-Wink MMA staple.

I realize I’m about to do something in literally three years, what Jones hasn’t even done in how long in the company? Over ten years,” Adesanya said. “I’m about to do it in three years and move up in weight. He’s doing it now after how long? And we’re still waiting to see if he’s actually gonna do it. And like, it’s crazy how everything’s just set up, man. [When] I take this belt from Jan (Blachowicz), if for whatever reason Jones actually moves up and fights at heavyweight, like, imagine if he got the belt somehow, by some freak of nature, I’m like, f*ck you, I’m going to heavyweight then. Three belts at the same time.
