Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach Javier Mendez responded to critics claiming the lightweight champion decided to sit out UFC 249.

Nurmagomedov received plenty of criticism and accusations of “ducking” Tony Ferguson after he had to pull out of their scheduled title fight after getting stuck in Russia due to a cross-border travel ban amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Eagle” was originally traveling to Abu Dhabi from the United States as that’s where he claims to have been told the fight would happen. But when the borders were closed on his arrival, he returned home to Russia which would later enforce the cross-border travel ban ruling him out.

In the end, it was the right move as UFC 249 — set to take place on tribal land in California on April 18 — was eventually canceled. Regardless, Mendez decided to speak on the matter:

“He didn’t choose to sit it out,” Mendez said during a fan Q&A on YouTube (via MMA Fighting). “He just went back home and he was waiting and training and waiting for a location. So he didn’t choose to sit out anything. They couldn’t give him a location and then he couldn’t get permission. He wasn’t gonna be able to get permission, so he didn’t really sit anything out. He didn’t get permission and he didn’t get the location and now we know why he didn’t get the location because of fear of it leaking out. Because it leaked out, now look, there is no show.

“He did absolutely the right thing when he was told to go to Abu Dhabi because the show more likely was going to be there, and then he would go home from there if that didn’t work out, but that was the plan, and then train at home and then see what happens.”

For now, all we can do is wait for the world to return to normal and then rebook Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson. The Dagestan native previously hinted at returning in August, but as per his latest post, September also seems to be an option.

Those are the two options that make sense according to Mendez:

“We may see him in August or we may see him in September,” Mendez added. “If it’s August, I believe it’s San Francisco. If it’s September, I believe it’s Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. So yeah, that’s when we’ll see it. One of those.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov

AKA head coach Javier Mendez has revealed Khabib
Nurmagomedov is the only person allowed to train in his gym right now.

The revered MMA trainer says his gym is closed to the public and all other fighters as they strive to keep the lightweight champion healthy.

“Just Khabib,” Javier Mendez told ESPN. “That’s it. Nobody else is allowed. No one is coming. Just Khabib. … We’ve gotta keep it safe for him.”

In the undefeated Russians’ mind, he’s fighting no matter what on April 18. Even if for some reason challenger Tony Ferguson falls out.

“Khabib
expects to fight somebody if something happens to Tony,” Mendez said.
“He expects to fight somebody. One top guy. Whatever. And then he’ll go
back after Tony. That’s the way he looks at it. He’s expecting to fight.

“It’s not like, ‘Tony is out; forget it I’m not
fighting.’ He’s training to fight somebody. It’s not like he has it in for
Tony. He doesn’t have it in for Tony. [Ferguson is] a top guy. He’s the very
best right now that he could face. So that’s why [Khabib] wants to face
him.”

The AKA head coach admits his fighter has been somewhat distracted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, he insists training has not let up and won’t until they are told something different by UFC president Dana White.

“It’s affected him a little bit,” Mendez said. “But he has to fight. His attitude is, ‘I’ve got to fight. I’m here to fight and, until they tell me otherwise, I’m training to fight.’ So until Dana [White] says, ‘Get the foot off the pedal, we can’t make it happen,’ Khabib is going to stick to that mindset.”

Despite still pressing on with fight camp, Mendez isn’t convinced the UFC will be able to find a suitable location for the fight. Its previous host site of Brooklyn, New York was officially scrapped last night and the promotion is trying to find a new host country, city, and venue.

“I
know Dana will do everything in his power to make it happen, but I don’t know
if he will make it happen. I can’t say for sure he will. I’m not sure if they
can pull it off, because [White] can’t control governments. … I want it to
happen, obviously. Nobody gets paid if nobody goes to work.”

Nurmagomedov doesn’t share his coach’s opinion and is pressing ahead with training as if nothing has changed according to Mendez who said.

“His attitude is the fight is happening. His
sparring was fantastic on Monday, trust me. He’s training like the fight is
gonna happen and I’m teaching him like the fight is gonna happen and telling
him the fight is gonna happen.”

Will UFC
249 take place on April 18 as planned?

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Lightweight
champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is backing Yoel Romero to claim middleweight gold by
beating Israel Adesanya at UFC 248 on Saturday night.

The 155lb champion has even put a wager on the fight with his long-time head coach Javier Mendez. Prior to a training session the pair took time out to discuss the upcoming fight on the coach’s YouTube channel. Check out the video below.

In the video
Nurmagomedov is clearly backing the Cuban contender to come out victorious in
the fight. On the flip side coach Mendez believes Adesanya will be able to retain
his title. And if he does, Mendez has demanded his fighter buy him some Gucci sunglasses
similar to ones UFC fighter Islam
Makhachev already owns.

However, if Romero does win, Nurmagomedov has asked for a five-round sparring session with his coach. Which to us seems like a massive risk to take just for some sunglasses.

The UFC 248 main event has fans, pundits and even fighters split right down the middle. Either man can emerge victorious with the 185lb title this weekend and that is what makes it such a highly anticipated fight.

Will Khabib get his five-round sparring session or will he
be buying coach Javier Mendez some new sunglasses?
