Heavy hitting Ron Sparks showed he has a good ground game as he submits Vince Lucero in the first round.

In the first bout of the televised portion of Bellator 43, Vince Lucero (20-18) of Casa Grande, AZ took on up-and-coming Ron Sparks (6-0) of Louisville, KY in a heavyweight bout.

Before the fight, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told BleacherReport.com/MMA that he was afraid this was going to be the biggest mismatch on the card.

The first round began with both fighters exchanging punches in the middle of the cage. It was very clear on the on-start that Sparks was the more polished striker, as he landed the better of the punches and kicks.

Less than two minutes in to the opening round, Sparks landed a kick and punch that dropped Lucero. from there, Sparks got side control, and locked in a key lock that forced Lucero to tap.

From the outcome, it looks like Rebney’s prediction was correct. Don’t be surprised if we see Sparks in Bellator’s next heavyweight tournament.

Official Result—Ron Sparks defeated Vince Lucero via submission (key lock) at 2:18 of the first round.

Ron Sparks runs his perfect record up to 7-0, while Vince Lucero drops to 20-19.

Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren won a one-sided unanimous decision in a non-title match, and Jay Hieron and Michael Chandler advanced to the finals of their respective Season 4 tournaments on Saturday night at Bellator 40.

As is so often the case, Bellator put on an entertaining show on MTV2, but it will be largely overlooked because it took place on a night when there was a bigger MMA event going on in the Strikeforce card on Showtime. That’s a shame for Bellator, which is putting good fighters in the cage consistently.

Askren is one of the best wrestlers in MMA, and it was no surprise that he completely dominated Nick Thompson. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Askren, who’s the best welterweight outside the UFC and Strikeforce.

The fourth season of Bellator Fighting Championships started Thursday night on MTV2 with Brent Weedman, Rick Hawn, Jay Hieron and Lyman Good winning their fights and advancing to the semifinals of Bellator’s welterweight tournament.

It was a good start to Season 4 for Bellator, and a solid if not spectacular fight card, although it wasn’t without controversy, particularly in Hieron’s victory, which came on a bad stoppage with a referee who made a major mistake.

Weedman’s unanimous decision victory over Dan Hornbuckle was a sensational bout, with back-and-forth ground action that had both guys in danger of being submitted multiple times. All three judges scored it 29-28 for Weedman, but it easily could have gone 29-28 for Hornbuckle, and many of the fans in Lemoore, California, booed the judges’ verdict. Weedman was classy, saying, “Dan’s the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced in over 30 fights.” Weedman had what appeared to be a significant cut on his left eyelid, which will bear watching as he needs to return for the semifinals in less than two months.
