Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens have both expressed interest in fighting each other.

And now, according to Aldo’s longtime head coach, Andre Pederneiras, the bout is close to being finalized:

“Jeremy Stephens asked for the fight against Aldo,” Pederneiras said, as transcribed by Combate.com. “Three days ago, the UFC gave us a fight at UFC-Singapore as an option for Aldo’s return. (On Friday) we accepted it, and we’re just waiting on confirmation on the other side and a contract to sign.”

Aldo has hit some rough times as of late, as he’s coming off of back-to-back stoppage losses to reigning 145-pound champion Max Holloway. Despite the recent skid, however, he’s still highly ranked and still considered to be the very best featherweight champion in UFC history.

Stephens, on the other hand, has been on a tear as of late, winning three consecutive bouts over the likes of Gilbert Melendez, Doo Ho Choi and Josh Emmett. He’s nearing a title shot, but it’s expected that Holloway will next defend his strap against Brian Ortega, who stopped Frankie Edgar earlier this month at UFC 222.

The UFC will return to Singapore for UFC Fight Night 132 on June 23, 2018.

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has his sights on his next possible opponent.

Aldo has called out UFC veteran Jeremy Stephens for a fight. The good news is that this is a fight that makes sense from a booking standpoint and it appears that both fighters are on board for this fight.

The former featherweight champion recently conducted an interview with Brazil’s Combate News and during that interview, he noted that he would like to have this fight take place at the upcoming UFC 224 pay-per-view event.

“We’re trying to land a spot there,” Aldo said (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). “I was supposed to have fought in April; it didn’t happen. So we’re just waiting on the opponent. For sure,” Aldo said. “He’s a guy who asked to fight us. I’ve already sent Dana (White, UFC president) a message saying I want this fight. I think it’s a great fight, and I’m just waiting to hear back.”

The UFC 224 pay-per-view event is slated to go down on Saturday, May 12 in Rio de Janeiro. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

This show already has a main event set. It was officially announced earlier this week that women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes would make her next title defense against rising contender Raquel Pennington.

Stephens has responded to Aldo’s challenge, and he didn’t use many words for his reaction. Although, he is not down to fight in Brazil, but rather at the UFC 225 pay-per-view event. He posted the following on his official Twitter account:

The UFC 225 pay-per-view event slated to go down on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

As of this writing, Alistair Overeem vs. Curtis Blaydes, Claudia Gadelha taking on Carla Esparza, and Joseph Benavidez meeting Sergio Pettis have already been confirmed for the upcoming event.

The show doesn’t have the main event yet, but UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker recently took to his official Twitter account to lay down the challenge to Yoel Romero for their fight to take place at this upcoming pay-per-view event, which could serve as the main event.

Surging UFC featherweight Jeremy Stephens picked up a third straight win with a brutal knockout finish of Josh Emmett (watch the highlights) in the main event of last weekend’s (Sat., February 24, 2018) UFC on FOX 28 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, but the victory didn’t come without a heap of controversy.

After rocking Emmett with a pinpoint left hand in the second round, ‘Lil’ Heathen’ followed him to the ground with what appeared to be a possibly illegal knee and two elbows that hit him in the back of the head. Emmett and his team were irate after the fight and revealed plans to appeal the defeat.

The results of that appeal, although appeals are rarely successful, remains to be seen, but for now, Stephens has earned a significant boost up the official UFC rankings. For the win over Emmett, he rose three spots to No. 5 on the 145-pound ranks, sending Emmett down two spots to No. 6.

The Orlando event also saw some movement at 205 pounds, where Ilir Latifi also rose up three spots to No. 5 for his impressive submission win over Ovince Saint Preux, who dropped one spot to No. 6.

Marion Reneau also continued to inch up the women’s bantamweight rankings after a shocking comeback submission over Sara McMann following a first round where she was controlled on the ground, rising up a spot to No. 7 and sending McMann to No. 8.
