This has the potential to be a big year for Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

As the Pole prepares to put her UFC strawweight title on the line against the streaking Jessica Andrade Saturday at UFC 211, the many looming possibilities are simply too big to ignore.

During her 26 months as 115-pound champion, Jedrzejczyk has rapidly established herself as a darling of MMA‘s hardcore set. If the dominos fall correctly for her in 2017, it could be enough to launch the woman dubbed “Joanna Champion” even further into the stratosphere.

Or, at the very least, into the UFC record books.

Jedrzejczyk needs just two more wins to tie Ronda Rousey‘s record of six consecutive title defenses.

It’s a symbolic milestone, but given that Rousey is still the mark by which greatness is judged in women’s MMA, it would be meaningful for Jedrzejczyk to tie and perhaps pass her as the UFC’s greatest female champion.

In somewhat more concrete news, the UFC confirmed Tuesday—after one false start—it will add a women’s flyweight class later this year with season 26 of The Ultimate Fighter.

This presents a perhaps even more tantalizing opportunity for Jedrzejczyk. In the past, she’s talked openly about her desire to compete at 125 pounds, so it’s at least possible she might follow in the footsteps of Conor McGregor as the second UFC fighter to simultaneously hold two titles in two different weight classes.

Rousey and McGregor? That’s not bad company to be in for one of the organization’s brightest developing stars.

It’s equally difficult not to notice that those future possibilities are beginning to take shape just as competition in Jedrzejczyk‘s own strawweight division is swiftly heating up.

Her last two title defenses—against Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz, respectively—were surprisingly competitive affairs. Now, the next two figure to offer up the greatest challenges of Jedrzejczyk‘s 13-fight career.

Andrade has been impressive since dropping from bantamweight to strawweight in June 2016. She’s won three straight fights, including two stoppages, while showing off a hard-charging style that could feature the best aspects of Gadelha‘s grappling-based game plan while packing more power on the feet than Kowalkiewicz.

After watching both those bouts, Andrade thinks she’s got Jedrzejczyk figured out. One of the keys, she says, will be to pressure the champion as a way of disrupting her technical, point-point accurate kickboxing skills.

“Karolina was a girl that didn’t back away from Joanna when she was getting pressured, which was something new,” Andrade told Fox Sports’ Damon Martin.

“Pretty much everybody that fought her before, once Joanna put pressure they would walk back. We noticed that she didn’t do as well with other people that [wouldn’t] back away from her.”

Still, Jedrzejczyk is going off as the favorite here, according to OddsShark, and it’s hard to doubt her. She’s been so good since winning the title from Carla Esparza in March 2015 that the smart money says she’ll find a way to be successful against Andrade.

The two are already well-acquainted with each other. Jedrzejczyk quipped during a recent UFC-sponsored media lunch that she and the Brazilian used to train with each other on-and-off while both were making their way up the ranks.

Dare she say they used to be friends?

“Friends may be a bit too much—we were colleagues. Is that a good word?” Jedrzejczyk said, via MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi. “[I know] that I can submit her and I can knock her out [in training], but the fight is different. It was in the past. Jessica is a very dangerous opponent. She drops from 125. She’s very strong in the strawweight division.”

If she manages to get by Andrade, it’s possible Jedrzejczyk has an even bigger fight waiting for her against perennial contender Rose Namajunas.

Namajunas is one of the few fighters at 115 pounds who could match Jedrzejczyk for popularity. She exited her appearance on season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter riding a substantial wave of hype, and she appears at the height of her powers after a couple of slip-ups along the way.

Still just 24 years old, Namajunas‘ recent second-round submission win over Michelle Waterson at UFC on Fox 24 appears to have her poised as the No. 1 contender in waiting.

If everything goes according to plan, a matchup between Namajunas and Jedrzejczyk later this year would stack up as the biggest strawweight attraction since the UFC started the division in 2014.

If the two fighters did a reasonably good job selling a rivalry and it could be billed as the event where Jedrzejczyk was out to tie Rousey‘s record, it could be a modest success for all involved.

From there, she might think about testing the waters at flyweight, once the UFC has its 125-pound class up and running.

And perhaps therein lies the rub for Jedrzejczyk this weekend. The Andrade fight smacks of one she needs to get through in order to have a chance to make those bigger opportunities come to fruition. It also smacks of a very difficult matchup.

That’s not always the most advantageous combination for a champion who could be on the cusp of bigger things.

A defeat here might cost Jedrzejczyk more then her title. It could cost her the chance to join people like Rousey and McGregor in the annals of UFC history.

The way the UFC classify their different weight categories is surely something that is hugely impacting a lot many female fighters. The UFC is not exactly quick to act and adopt new weight categories and this results in many of the female fighters either having to face much larger opposition or shed weight (and inevitably a bit of strength in the process). Jessica Andrade who with a record of 16 – 5 knows about this struggle all too well being undersized at 135 lbs and taking on some considerably bigger fighters in the division and yet managed to get some wins to her name.

However, since she scaled down to 115 lbs and dropped to a lower weight division she right away established herself as one of the best in the category when she defeated Jessica Penne pretty convincingly.

Now, she takes on Joanna Jedrzejczky in UFC 211 and this is going to be her title shot. Jedrzejczky is certainly going to be the toughest challenge for Jedrzejczky yet and it is going to be very interesting to see what the outcome is. Jedrzejczky herself, has been on the rise ever since she beat Carla Esparza in 2015 to take the title. She has been on fire and has successfully defended the title as many as 4 times until now. Considering her immaculate form and sky high confidence, it is no surprise that we are predicting Jedrzejczky will take the victory by unanimous decision.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s next title challenger has no shortage of confidence heading into her bout against the undefeated Polish knockout artist.

The No. 3-ranked UFC strawweight Jessica Andrade will try her hand at attempting to hand ‘Joanna Champion’ her first career mixed martial arts (MMA) loss. The pair will throw down in the co-main event of UFC 211 on pay-per-view (PPV) this weekend (Sat. May 13, 2017) from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

During a recent interview with FOX Sports, Andrade explained why she believes she is going to de-throne the second ever 115-pound champion (quotes via FOX Sports):

“Watching the last fight, especially, we saw that Karolina [Kowalkiewicz] was a girl that didn’t back away from Joanna when she was getting pressured, which was something new. Pretty much everybody that fought her before, once Joanna put pressure they would walk back. We noticed that she didn’t do as well with other people that would back away from her,” Andrade said.

“We are very much aware of everything Joanna does well and we are even more aware of what I do well and how those two match. If Claudia [Gadelha] was able to knock her down with a jab, once my straight [punch] lands or one of my hooks, I know there’s going to be a party in Brazil.”

The former 135-pound competitor has proven that she can finish fights anywhere, owning five of her 21 career wins via knockout and seven by submission. Andrade puts a tremendous amount of pressure on her opponents inside the Octagon – something she doesn’t think Jedrzejczyk has experienced before:

“The way that I put pressure on in fights is something Joanna has never had to deal with. She’s not used to someone just bullying her or just grabbing her and with pressure all the time,” Andrade said. “This is something we’re expecting her to have problems with because she is so technical, she is someone who comes from a really strong technical background. We know this from history that people who are too technical, they sometimes lose themselves with an opponent who are not as technical or not as predictable as them. This is something we are really hoping will make a difference. We know that it’s going to make a difference cause I’ll be honest, it’s really difficult to prepare against someone like me.

“The way that I fight, it’s not easy for my opponent to just sit there and think. Once I start getting my punches going, they aren’t going to have time to think.”

While Andrade admits that she isn’t on par with the champion when it comes to the technicality in striking, however, the Brazilian believes her power will be the key to overwhelming ‘JJ’ en-route to securing the UFC title:

“The thing with Joanna, she does have a lot of punching power but it comes a lot from speed and technique. We are very much aware of that. I’m not as technical as her, probably won’t ever be because that’s not the game that works for me,” Andrade said. “I know my strength. I know there’s probably no one at strawweight that is as strong as I am. There’s probably no other strawweight that has the power and strength that I have and that’s going to show in the fight.

“I don’t think she can even prepare for someone my size and my strength in her camp. It’s not something very easy to prepare for.”

Andrade is so confident in her striking power that she is predicting a knockout finish somewhere within the first 15 minutes of the bout:

“Since we got the fight, even before, I’ve seen the fight playing out in many ways. I think I could knock her out, I could finish her. She’s got that long skinny neck that I could grab onto and get a submission,” Andrade described. “Honestly, the way I see it, I’m going to get a knock out before the third round.

“At some point in those 15 minutes, my hand is going to connect and I’m not going to let her get back up. I’m not going to let her recover. I’m predicting a knockout by the third round.”

It was not too long ago when current UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk was friendly with Jessica Andrade. Although they were not the best of friends, they did share a manager and had sparring sessions. Jedrzejczyk took part in a UFC 211 media lunch in Century City to promote her fight with Andrade, and during the lunch, she reflected on their relationship.

“I know Jessica for a while,” Jedrzejczyk explained to MMA Fighting. “We’ve been kind of friends. Friends may be a bit too much — we were colleagues. Is that a good word? We used to train together sometimes, we used to do some crazy things when I was at the fights when she fought or when I fought. We used to have good times, many good times.”

Jedrzejczyk will defend her title against Andrade in the co-main event of UFC 211, which takes place next Saturday. Jedrzejczyk stated that she did learn some things from their sparring sessions but did acknowledge that an actual fight is a totally different animal.

“That I can submit her and I can knock her out,” Jedrzejczyk said when asked what she gleaned. “But the fight is different. It was in the past. Jessica is a very dangerous opponent. She drops from 125. She’s very strong in the strawweight division.”

There has been some tension between the two fighters as Andrade has said some things in the press that Jedrzejczyk hasn’t been too happy. According to the champ, she believes they were facilitated by her former manager and Andrade’s current manager Tiago Okamura of SuckerPunch Entertainment.

“Everything is good,” she said. “Jessica says a few things, but I know she cannot speak English very well, so probably it was Tiago, who used to be my manager and friend. The thing is, I don’t mind. It’s all about the fight. Like I said, we used to train together, spar together a little bit. But it’s all about this fight.”

Jedrzejczyk, who is undefeated, has been on a roll in the UFC as she has four title defenses and is the second most tenured champion in the UFC after Demetrious Johnson. She is going after former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s record for most UFC title defenses in a women’s division (six). Jedrzejczyk made it clear that her fight with Andrade is business, not personal unlike her long feud with Claudia Gadelha. However, Andrade has made comments about Jedrzejczyk as she criticized Jedrzejczyk’s punching power

“They always want to talk,” Jedrzejczyk said. But I let my fists talk in the Octagon. Jessica didn’t face someone tough like me. I let her taste the power of my fist. That’s the thing. I know that people are getting a little too crazy,” Jedrzejczyk. “When they have a chance to deal with the big media or big events. I heard a few things from Jessica. I know she’s a different person. I’m calm. I hope we’re gonna have a good relationship before the fight, after the fight. That she’s not gonna get crazy before this fight. Because becoming a challenger, it’s a pretty big deal for everyone. But it’s not easy to become a champion and deal with it. It’s even more difficult than just being a fighter or a challenger.”
