UFC light heavyweight contender Jimmy Crute last octagon appearance ended in an unusual fashion after he suffered a first-round leg injury against Anthony Smith at UFC 261, but he’s looking forward to ending 2021 in style with a showdown with Jamahal Hill by year’s end.

Crute looked impressive leading up to the injury he suffered against Smith in Jacksonville earlier this year, and still believes he’s on the rise to the top of the UFC’s light heavyweight division. While it obviously wasn’t the result he wanted, Crute is turning the page to the latest chapter in his career and looks forward to putting on a stellar performance against another tough prospect like Hill.

Crute hasn’t had many blemishes during his young UFC career, with the doctor’s stoppage loss to Smith being only his second defeat in the promotion. A former Dana White‘s Contender Series standout, Crute is one of the brightest stars in the UFC and has all the makings of a potential UFC champion.

During his downtime recovering, he used UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz and top contender, Glover Teixeira, as inspirations.

“Two of my favorites right there,” Crute told LowKickMMA about the upcoming UFC 267 showdown. “Two guys that have come back from adversity, two guys who have gone further in their careers than they were supposed to. Those are the sort of guys you gotta look for inspiration when you feel down.”

While an official date and venue haven’t been determined for the Crute vs. Hill fight, his face lit up when asked about how excited he was for the opportunity to fight again after his disappointing start to the year.

When it comes to his fight camp, his strong bond with Australian combat sports legend and coach Sam Greco is a big reason for his early success. Crute said he wouldn’t be where he is today without Grego in his corner.

“Sammy’s the man,” Crute said when asked to describe his head coach. “He’s a mentor to me and is the most loyal bloke you’ll ever meet. We get spoiled a little bit at the gym and I’ve learned so much from him.”

Many in the UFC, including his former opponent Smith, have praised Crute as one of the brightest stars in the sport. Only time will tell before the Aussie takes the next step towards UFC gold.

Jimmy Crute is pumped to have an opponent and fight date.

We haven’t seen the Aussie light-heavyweight in action since he suffered the most unusual of defeats to Anthony Smith at UFC 261 back in April.

‘The Brute’ ate a kick that immediately put him on unsteady legs. It appeared that Crute was suffering from ‘drop foot’, akin to Sean O’Malley against Marlon Vera, Henry Cejudo against Demetrious Johnson, and Michael Chandler against Brent Primus.

At the end of round one, the bout was waved off despite the fact Crute very clearly wanted to keep fighting. The 25-year-old tells LowKickMMA that he was quickly able to heal up from the injury and says he was back to full training in no time.

“It was just a little bit of nerve damage, which normally takes a long time to heal but I was back to training right away,” Crute said. “Took a few weeks off from sparring, got the green light from the doctor and we’re good to go. We’re all the same as fighters, it’s just one of those where [Anthony Smith] just hit me in the right spot.”

Crute is currently enduring a tough time like many fighters in his region. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented the 25-year-old from getting the fights and training he desires.

“The hardest part of doing camps in Australia is trying to get fights, I wanted to get four fights this year. I barely got two,” Crute explained. “The only enticing thing about going to the states is getting those short-notice fights. The problem is just scheduled to fight. Probably the hardest thing training-wise is seeing your training partners. I wanted to see Rob [Whittaker] but all the travel restrictions have made that tough. We get the work done either way, but I’m really looking forward to when Sydney and Melbourne open up so we can train together again.”

Crute was originally set to fight Hill on October 2, but the fight has since been pushed back to December. An official announcement is yet to be made on the specific fight date, but our sources say Crute vs. Hill is set for December 4 and will most likely take place in Las Vegas.

Whatever the date, Crute is just psyched to have a fight to prepare for. Especially against an opponent like Hill who he believes is in a similar position to him in terms of the 205lb rankings.

“I’m super excited. We’re similar in the rankings, both need a win,” Crute said. “Nothing but respect for the guy, I appreciate his abilities and stuff like that. But this is a fight to determine who’s more worth of moving up the rankings. The fight got pushed back, he got injured and couldn’t fight next month. Fights are hard to come by, so we have a date now at the end of the year.”

Do you think Jimmy Crute will get back to winning ways on December 4?

Jimmy Crute: ‘I Don’t Feel Like They Should Have Stopped The Fight’

Jimmy Crute believes he should’ve been allowed to fight on against Anthony Smith at UFC 261 despite being unsteady on his feet ahead of the second round of their light-heavyweight match-up.

In an interview with Submission Radio, Crute reflected on his TKO loss to ‘Lionheart’.

I felt a lot better after watching it back,” Crute said. “I was definitely wining that first round. I don’t feel like they should have stopped the fight for what they did, but it is what is. Like, what can I do about it? But I do feel better after watching it back. It was close, and as soon as the injury happened, I started dominating. So, it makes me feel a bit better about the whole situation. I know they shouldn’t have stopped it, and if they didn’t stop it I would have gone out and dominated in the second round.”

Crute talked about the kick which shut down his leg and ultimately brought an end to the fight.

“He hit me with this leg kick that hit me in the perineal nerve and just took out my whole bottom leg,” Crute explained. “Like, I couldn’t feel. Literally, it just felt like my leg had been dipped in fire, and then it went numb and I couldn’t feel anything in my leg. And then I kept rolling my ankle. But as soon as that happened, I just thought, oh well, I guess we’ll just have to grapple now. I knew the feeling in my leg would come back. With that nerve damage, it only lasts for about a minute or two. So, I knew that if I just grounded him, hopefully by the end of the round I could get some feeling back in my leg and we could go for the second. It took a little bit longer to get the feeling back. I think I literally started walking again normally like 20 seconds after they called the fight.

The 25-year-old is hoping to get an immediate rematch but understands that may not be possible.

“Yeah, I said we’ll run it back, and he said for sure. But it’s one thing to say that, but if I was him, I’m not gonna say he’s gonna be scared, but he’s gonna know that that fight ended in a way that benefited him,” Crute said. “That it could have gone a lot differently for him. It really could have gone a lot differently to him. If we make that second round, the tides turn massively. But yeah, if I get the rematch, it’s fine. I’m not gonna get a rematch straight away. Maybe I rematch Misha Cirkunov first. Maybe we go on a rematch tour.”

Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith has scored his second consecutive victory, taking a first round win over Jimmy Crute, however, it didn’t come in the most ideal circumstances for the Nebraksa native.

Scoring notable jabs from the onset and throughout their opening round clash, Smith was suffering with some calf kick attempts from Crute, before he replied with a single leg offence of his own. Landing directly behind the knee of Crute, Smith immediately drew a wobble from the Australian.

Appearing to suffer from ‘drop foot’, akin to Sean O’Malley against Marlon Vera, Henry Cejudo against Demetrious Johnson, and Michael Chandler against Brent Primus — Crute was forced to immediately shoot for a takedown on two separate occasions prior to the first round klaxon.

Failing to make it back to his stool in between rounds without a stumble, the Octagon-sided physician beckoned Crute to walk toward him in the centre of the Octagon, which he couldn’t do without stumbling. It’s not ideal circumstances for Smith but he’s now riding a two-fight rise.

Below, check out the highlights from Smith’s doctor’s stoppge sucess against Crute.
